I don't eat a whole lot of seafood, and what I do eat I don't think comes from that area generally anyhow.  But I would actually eat more of it if I knew that in that effort, those who may lose their businesses could have that staved off by my increased consumption.  I don't think the oil spill per se really affects the fish too much, and once the oil drifts out of the way, they can fish.

Seafood comes from all over the world..not just the gulf of Mexico near the oil spill area......I don't get it..... I am going to log off soon and eat a couple yummy crab cakes...mmmmmm

Exactly. I doubt any prawns I buy here in AU will be affected.

The only thing that would squick me about seafood is focusing on how most seafood is the aquatic equivalent of a bug. Which is why I try not to think about that [8D]

I eat a lot of seafood. Wild caught shrimp is obviously off the menu for the forseeable future. Alaskan wild salmon is the only other non farmed seafood I buy ona regular basis. As a matter of fact I'm "working" at home tomorrow so I can take delivery of a shipment of live crawdads for a big boil me and my friends are having for watching the first game of the Stanley Cup playoffs.

cant monsanto fix it?

You people are nuts.   I seldom eat sea food- because most waters are toxic.  I figure I am safer if I stick higher up the food chain.

99% of the seafood I eat, my Master or I have caught ourselves in Tampa bay.  Not sure what we are going to do if the oil slips into our waters.

I did decide not to buy gasoline from any BP station.  I might buy soda or gum from the store owner but if I need fuel BP is not getting my money.

I gave up seafood 34 years ago when a bad piece of fish almost killed me.

You folks do realize that due to the spill, the price of seafood will rise?  That's enough to put me off it.

Do you understand why pregnant women should limit their intake of large predatory fish? It's not because they live in toxic waters. It's because they are at the top of the food chain. Animals that eat animals, which virtually all fish we eat do, naturally concentrate any contaminants in the environment. This is why we mostly don't eat terrestrial carnivores.

Of course if you aren't carrying around a developing fetus the trace amounts of heavy metals etc. found in most fish is harmless.

Depends on where you live.

In Colorado, yeah, probably for sure.

No I wasn't trying to be flippant. I am a huge "organic" food person, as in "Food Inc." My meat comes from local farms and not the grocery store. I get what you are saying, I just think that living in Maine, I will continue to enjoy my lobster. [;)]. It was "wicked good".

Aynne, that's "wicked pissa!" I used to go over to that floating restaurant "Amato's (?) all the time in Portland, the owner's son (Steve) used to give us Coast Guard people a 10% discount when we'd flash our i.d.'s. (Shhhh!)
The food there was Great!
And the bar downstairs was a surprisingly good place to meet women.
And the sunday brunch buffet was fantastic too!
There was another great place in S. Portland too, "Newick's," but I noticed that it's gone when I drove by last summer!
All kinds of great seafood restaurants in Maine!

I started growing my own a few years ago...after a couple of hiccups at the beginning (run away production)I am now getting a sustained yield of about two pounds of meat a month.
Enjoy your holiday[:)]

thats not true

the mnr puts out mercury levels for all the lakes so people can adjust their diet accordingly

Yeah. Should have said the trace amounts in comercially sold fish. Fishing in random lakes can get you in trouble.

Noooo Amato's is a rocking good italian sandwich shop, you are thinking of DiMillo's! It's a big ship on the water on Congress Street! I have had plenty of fun in the bar.[;)]. Yep Newick's is closed, but right across from DiMillo's is a new place "Old Port Sea Grille and Raw Bar." Hot bartenders, killer oysters and great drinks. Get your ass here, I'll show you the town.[:)].
