Eat sardines. Young fish so mercury levels are low. One the most sustainable seafoods.

I am still going to eat seafood; tuna, shrimp, clams, calimari, salmon, halibut, crab, cod, etc. We have a local restaurant here that specializes in seafood and bar-b-que with an outdoor patio area perfect for warm summer evenings. No, I'm not giving up seafood due to the spill. I don't eat it that often the way it is because MP is allergic to it. I only eat it when I go out. I think the only way I'd give it up entirely would be an allergy of My own and I don't foresee that happening. Best wishes on your new resolve, OP, but I plan on keeping the little bit of seafood that I have in My diet.

I've decided to eat more to make up for the..."missguided"...who have stopped eating. Those waterman, shrimpers, pickers, diggers, processing plants workers, truck drivers, mechanics, fuel station and truck stop workers, waitresses, cooks and diner owners, seafood restaurants, bussers, bartenders, mongers, cashiers and a host of other human beings who count on the seafood industry to provide for themselves and their families.

This spill only covers a fifth of a percent or so of the total surface area of the Earth's oceans (just a quick calculation in my head, going from memory, and assuming a slick of 500x500 miles). In terms of volume, the total volume of the world's oceans is .3 billion cubic miles, and even in a worst case scenario, the total amount of oil leaked from this spill is the equivalent of only 60 Olympic-sized swimming pools. Granted, that's a lot of oil in one small area, but distributed among the world's oceans, it might as well be a few drops. This is a local catastrophe and a regional crisis, but globally, it's a total non-event.

Real simple. No oil contaminated fish are in the commercial stream. The area closed to fishing is vastly larger than the area actually affected by the spill. There will be seafood that is simply unavailable or whose price will increase dramatically (wild caught Gulf shrimp is the biggest one) but most commercial seafood is from areas other than the Gulf and remain uncontaminated. BTW vegan self righteousness is annoying and unearned. When you learn to photosynthesize and stop consuming any living organisms let me know. That's when I'll be impressed.

I do not need an exact figure ..."just a quick calculation in my head, going from memory, and assuming..." It does not have to even be in the ballpark I would settle for anything in the same zip code.
