KYsissy -> RE: Giving up eating seafood permanently or for a while due to Oil Spill? (5/28/2010 6:26:53 PM)

Eat sardines. Young fish so mercury levels are low. One the most sustainable seafoods.

Hillwilliam -> RE: Giving up eating seafood permanently or for a while due to Oil Spill? (5/28/2010 6:28:20 PM)

As a matter of fact I'm "working" at home tomorrow so I can take delivery of a shipment of live crawdads for a big boil

I started growing my own a few years ago...after a couple of hiccups at the beginning (run away production)I am now getting a sustained yield of about two pounds of meat a month.
Enjoy your holiday[:)]

interesting. how big a pond produces 2 pounds of tail meat a month?

The lil phoquers are carnivors so putting them in a pond the big guys will eat the little ones and it is too difficult to harvest them.
I have a bunch of old dead refrigerators that I have laid flat and try to keep them sorted by size.
I had a rat problem and made a trap that enticed the rats to go swimming. The problem was that I had a population explosion of crawdads. When the rat problem was eliminated it was easier to control their food intake.
I figure the old refrigerators hold 50 gallons or there abouts. I have a dozen fridges so as they mature I eat them. When I have more than I can eat I just let them grow till I am hungry.
I am not sure as to the particular variety but I picked up a bucket of them up in the san joquin vally a few years ago just to see if I could grow them.

I am still going to eat seafood; tuna, shrimp, clams, calimari, salmon, halibut, crab, cod, etc. We have a local restaurant here that specializes in seafood and bar-b-que with an outdoor patio area perfect for warm summer evenings.

Brad's Restaurant in Pismo Beach, California.

Umm I eat em at my desk sometimes.  One of the perks of being the boss.

LadyPact -> RE: Giving up eating seafood permanently or for a while due to Oil Spill? (5/29/2010 9:59:48 AM)

No, I'm not giving up seafood due to the spill.  I don't eat it that often the way it is because MP is allergic to it.  I only eat it when I go out.  I think the only way I'd give it up entirely would be an allergy of My own and I don't foresee that happening.

Best wishes on your new resolve, OP, but I plan on keeping the little bit of seafood that I have in My diet.

pahunkboy -> RE: Giving up eating seafood permanently or for a while due to Oil Spill? (5/29/2010 10:16:56 AM)

As a single guy- I LOVE to eat.  So any chefs keep me in mind.

(except for Domken)

I've decided to eat more to make up for the..."missguided"...who have stopped eating. Those waterman, shrimpers, pickers, diggers, processing plants workers, truck drivers, mechanics, fuel station and truck stop workers, waitresses, cooks and diner owners, seafood restaurants, bussers, bartenders, mongers, cashiers and a host of other human beings who count on the seafood industry to provide for themselves and their families.

No I wasn't trying to be flippant. I am a huge "organic" food person, as in "Food Inc." My meat comes from local farms and not the grocery store. I get what you are saying, I just think that living in Maine, I will continue to enjoy my lobster. [;)]. It was "wicked good".

Oh, hell, Aynne, I just watched that film. I've had a low-meat diet for years, but that just turned my stomach. Fucking barbaric. I'm lucky I bought a whole bunch of wheat gluten on sale not long ago to make my own Seitan. I do like a good Tuna steak or piece of Halibut from time to time, but I'm perfectly happy with a pot of red beans n rice or veggie gumbo.

That explains your mental deficiencies.

As we go into the 2nd month of the oil spill, and the fact that it is surely "spreading", I wonder
how many people will start "considering" taking a break from eating seafood for a while.

Musicmystery -> RE: Giving up eating seafood permanently or for a while due to Oil Spill? (6/2/2010 9:37:04 PM)

It's a big world, with a lot of ocean.

ThatDamnedPanda -> RE: Giving up eating seafood permanently or for a while due to Oil Spill? (6/2/2010 9:55:57 PM)

This spill only covers a fifth of a  percent or so of the total surface area of the Earth's oceans (just a quick calculation in my head, going from memory, and assuming a slick of 500x500 miles). In terms of volume, the total volume of the world's oceans is .3 billion cubic miles, and even in a worst case scenario, the total amount of oil leaked from this spill is the equivalent of only 60 Olympic-sized swimming pools. Granted, that's a lot of oil in one small area, but distributed among the world's oceans, it might as well be a few drops. This is a local catastrophe and a regional crisis, but globally, it's a total non-event.

Real simple. No oil contaminated fish are in the commercial stream. The area closed to fishing is vastly larger than the area actually affected by the spill. There will be seafood that is simply unavailable or whose price will increase dramatically (wild caught Gulf shrimp is the biggest one) but most commercial seafood is from areas other than the Gulf and remain uncontaminated.

BTW vegan self righteousness is annoying and unearned. When you learn to photosynthesize and stop consuming any living organisms let me know. That's when I'll be impressed.

@Panda: I envy you man. For calculations like the one you did 2 posts up, I have to take off my shoes as well as use my fingers. [sm=dancer.gif]

How long will the leak have to puke oil into the gulf before it becomes a global crissis? I do not need an exact figure ..."just a quick calculation in my head, going from memory, and assuming..." It does not have to even be in the ballpark I would settle for anything in the same zip code.
