If I ran the world (not too bloody likely!), everyone would just get civil unions,

They do.  That is why you have to file paperwork and pay those fees.
quote:

same-sex or not.  Marriages would be fer the churches to perform (that sanctity bit).

Ummm. . . what about the "justice of the peace" marriages?  Because I and the other half had that sort.  We had a judge marry us.  What happens to people that want a marriage that do not have a church they believe in?  Or are of different faiths, such as Jewish and Baptist?

What I read Thornhappy's post to mean that maybe the wording is what puts off the bigots.  Have one word for the legal part of it and a different word for the 'sacrament'.  What bothers me is that I have not heard of one state that will not legally recognize a marriage performed in a different state if the couple is opposite sex but can refuse to legally recognize a same-sex marriage.  That's wrong.  You either recognize a legal marriage or you don't, in my opinion.  But then I don't even see what all the fuss is about in the first place.

I count three same-sex couples as good friends of mine. One couple had a 'civil partnership' ceremony here in the UK last year. Funnily enough, I'd been to a 'normal' wedding in the same stately home about a month beforehand, and the registrar who led the service used exactly the same format for both 'weddings'.

It was such a beautiful, personal day that the other two couples are considering it for themselves sometime in the future.

And I get to buy at least one new hat! Woohoo!!

I've been married.  I highly recommend it.  I believe gay people should have the same opportunity for happiness.

I've been married too.

I think gays should run screaming in the opposite direction and avoid it at all costs.

Christian fundamentalists are unwittingly doing them a favor.

Yup.   Maybe 3 men in the country would even make a good husband.   That is not a good average.

So lets stir thepot once again.

Why?  What would be the point?-----to continue to develop myreputation for controversey on this board

quote:

Wht do we think of gay marriage?

"We"?  Are you some sort of royalty?----- No Im a peasent.

Seriously, I do not think of gay marriage.  Unless someone brings it up.  I really just do not spend my extra time pondering it.
quote:

 Im definately for it.

That is nice. ---- It really is
quote:

I wouldnt want to be a part of one,

Why is that?------ Im happily married with my wife
quote:

but I fully support those that do.

Gosh.  That is big of you.  "Fully support," is interesting.  Do you give money to groups fighting for this?  March in rallies?  Conduct letter writing campaigns?  Arrange activist fundraisers and awareness campaigns?---- I support, and donate money to political candidates that are for gay marriage.

What do you mean by, "fully support" anyways?  My guess is that you talk a good talk but do not actually DO anything.
quote:

Doesn't bother me in the least who people marry.

Especially when you do not even know the people.  Otherwise of course you would stand up at that part of the ceremony and state your objection.  After all, how can you object if you have no idea who is marrying who and when and where it is happening.---- you are right. I dont knowanyone in a gay marriage. But Id go to one. If you end up vowing into a gay marriage invite us we'd love to go. Ill bring the wedding cake. Seriously
quote:

Everyone has the right to their own personal happiness.

No.  No they do not.  That is such a silly fairy tale.---- I disagree Our constituion states "everyone has the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of hapiness"

Let me put it this way. . . if my personal happiness involved drawing and quartering you, would I have that right?----- If thats your fantasy then by all means fantasize. Thats your right if it make you happy. But if you actually tried to draw and quarter me there would be legal consequences like life in prison.

I know that according to what you have just wrote, that I have it.  But lets live in the meat world for a moment.  DO I HAVE THAT RIGHT?  Oh. . . the same goes for rapists, serial killers, embezzlers. . .the list goes on. ----- Well maybe in your case you should study up on assault and battery laws, rape laws, murder laws, and stuff like that.

Yeah.  That is what I thought.---- You want your penny?

It seems the church has a lot to do with many things, maybe even marriage law itself, the created laws of lands and such. Perhaps it's time to say phooey to the church if it opposes the happiness of people, as why shouldn't people get married if they wanted. Same sex, opposite sex, what does it matter, if people want to be joined by ritual, what's the problem, why should it be opposite sexes only ?

They aren't hurting anybody so I don't see why I could possibly have a problem with it.

I am 100% for gay marriage.

The nonsense that is espoused (had to use that word) against it is just that - nonsense.

I would like to have a civil union that is equal in all respects to any other civil marriage that would be adopted by all states.  I think "marriage" bothers some people and of course any religion can do whatever it pleases.  But love is love and the desire to have a formal, legal mate is not the sole property of heterosexuals.

I've been married.  I highly recommend it.  I believe gay people should have the same opportunity for happiness.

What a cute, silly woman.

For. It may be a bit OT, but I have noticed that the same people who oppose gay marriage are often the same Bible-brained mouthbreathers who insist that homosexuals are inherently promiscuous. I always find that hilarious coming from people who are hardly encouraging monogamy among gay people.
besides, it isn't like the notion of gay people marrying is any more deleterious to the sanctity of marriage than divorce, is it? I don't think any of the gay bashing dickheads on the religious right have been calling for that to be done away with recently.
