Not Ghostbusters, but close.

WASHINGTON — It’s official: The Gulf oil spill is a titanic mess.
The Obama administration yesterday called in Hollywood director James Cameron, of “Titanic” and “Avatar” fame, to help fix the massive gusher fouling the Gulf of Mexico.

Unfuckingbelieveable !  In as much as Bush fucked up the Katrina mess, I would have loved to have seen the reaction if he had called on Hollywood actors and directors to be " experts ". I didn't think a disaster could have been handled any worse than Katrina. I was wrong.

I am sure we will have pages of how " inovative" and "refreshing " Obama's approach is.   He has anything and everything available to him to help resolve this horrendous disaster, and Cameron and Cosner are right up there on the most desirable minds to use ?  If it weren't so sad, it would be laughable.

Have you seen any of the underwater technology that Cameron has used and helped bring to being?? he is on the leading edge, hardly JUST a movie maker.
Im not gonna give links, but google just what he has achieved for deep water research.

For fuck's sake, read your own link.

They were interested in his underwater filming experience.

Yes Rule, I read my own link. Yes Lucy, I am aware of his movie making expertise in underwater technology.

And I still don't think he is one of the "best and brightest" to be consulted on a disaster of the magnitude. Sorry. But hey... I said most of you would applaud this.

Thinking outside the box is never a bad idea,
but go with your ridicule
He has filmed and provided his own submersibles for filming two miles under the ocean, not just one mile..
He is considered an expert... so why is it laughable???
Edited to remove a typo

There aren't a whole lot of people with more hours as deep as Cameron. At this point any solution is worth at least examining.

I'm going to have to join Rule and Lucy in the applause.

First, if Bush HAD used Hollywood actors and driectors on Katrina things most likely would have gone much better.

Second, for several weeks now what you call "the most desirable minds" have tried one thing after another and so far have achieved nothing. At least the Obama administration is trying to make use of any and all resources available. Will asking Cameron and Cosner for ideas help? Who knows? But is it going to hurt to at least ask them for input? Not at all!

What I see as laughable is your narrow mind.

Cameron spent months with the people working at the Titanic site.  His crews built cutting edge deep sea robotics and developed the skill in using them.   You suggest one should throw all of that away because he also makes movies?

Now if they had actually called Bill Murray you should be scared.

It's not about "fixing this problem", it's about being able to see what is going on down there more accurately.

"Cameron’s expertise in underwater filming and remote-vehicle technologies earned him a seat with elite scientists gathered in Washington in a desperate bid to find a solution to the leak, which has been spewing crude for six weeks."

So he should NOT call on a pioneer in underwater filming and remote vehicle tech? THAT is a bad idea?

Here is a better idea.....why not call on the oil manufacturers who got us into this mess in the first place, I am sure we can trust them.  They have proven themselves so trustworthy lately.

btw- don't assume that just because someone is an actor or in the movie business that they do not have a brain or a solution to this problem.

Kevin Costner, who starred as the water-breathing hero of "Waterworld," got to audition technology he helped develop for cleaning up oil spills.
Inspired by his aquatic role in the 1995 movie, Costner funded Louisiana-based Ocean Therapy Solutions to develop centrifuges that can rapidly separate oil from contaminated seawater.
The technology is getting tested for use in the cleanup.

For fuck's sake. Did you read my link, rulemylife ?

snips:

-
Cameron’s expertise in underwater filming and remote-vehicle technologies earned him a seat with elite scientists gathered in Washington in a desparate bid to find a solution to the leak , which has been spewing crude for six weeks.

From where do you read he was there to help have a little looksee, a gander or a peeka boo . in the name of accuracy ?

I will gladly eat a big ole heaping plate of crow, when one of you.... in the future, links me to the breaking news that Cameron and Cosner played a pivotal role in fixing the oil spill.

Cameron’s expertise in underwater filming and remote-vehicle technologies earned him a seat with elite scientists gathered in Washington in a desperate bid to find a solution to the leak, which has been spewing crude for six weeks.
e Environmental Protection Agency also invited to the brainstorming session diving pioneer Phil Nuytten, who built submersibles for Cameron's 1989 deep-sea thriller, "The Abyss."

So again your saying that people with expertise at building and using robotics and submersibles in deep water should be ignored because they might also make movies?

Has anyone pondered the position, that advancing technology in a controlled enviornment is a much different than fixing this uncontrolled disaster ?

Edited to add that my comment is a straight slam on the folks who profit from putting the rest of us at risk, and should not be read as an indication as to my opinion of the OP.
