I'm not sure there would be a great deal of purpose in elaborating. Your defense of her struck me as reflexive and ridiculous. Things like that make me smile sometimes.

Gosh, you might want to watch it with the insults ;-)

And I did not defend her. I said that she misspoke. I think that people who are public figures need to watch everything they say lest it be taken out of context.

As I said earlier on in this thread, I do not support her opinion.

I don't really care too much about Israel but most people who are against Israel do it because of the whole occupied land/displaced people thing not omg jews are evil.

It would be more like someone saying all non Native Americans should gtfo.

Yes Owner, because telling Jews to get out of Israel and go home to Germany and Poland isn't race baiting at all. Not to mention the Israel bashing and US/Obama Admin. berating she gave Robert Gibbs that puts here "sincere" apology in question. She has a long history of being anti-Jew and anti Israel.

DS before someone tries to discredit Debbie Schussel blog I'll add this one: http://www.womensenews.org/story/journalist-the-month/030911/thomas-asks-questions-while-others-fear-tread

Though to be honest, I do not see why one is even needed. Again, she has always been a self identified Arab.

Will someone explain to me where Helen's comments stopped being a political statement and became anti-semetic. If she is against the existence of the State of Israel in the place that it is does that mean she is anti-semetic? I take anti-semetic to be equivalent to "jew hater." I did not see any of the latter in her comments. What did I miss?

Right about the time that she used the term "Jews" and "get the HELL out". Those are not the way an unbiased journalist would express anti-Zionist beliefs.

Okay, she is a biased journalist. But does that make her an anti-semite? What is wrong with using the term "Jews?" Isn't Zionism a political movement? So, my question remains, seriously, where is the line between political speech and hate speech?

ETA when does "get the hell out" cross over from political enthusiasm to hate speech? Anyone?

What you dont seem to get is that "get the hell out" doesnt "cross over" at any point...it is rooted in bigotry.

She didn't say, as in her backpedal, that "I believe the Israelis and Palestinians need to show mutual respect and that could be demonstrated on the part of Israelis by relinquishing occupied territories", she said they should get the hell out of land that they settled and developed since long before WWI and have AT LEAST as much claim to as the so called Palestinians. Even the WH, which lacks credibility wrt Israel, saw the difference and characterized her comments as reprehensible.

vincentML -> RE: Helen Thomas (6/7/2010 12:34:48 PM)

She also said the Israelis were "occupiers."

So, you are telling me that "get the hell out" is now a code word for bigotry?

If a Syrian said the United States should "get the hell out" of Iraq is that not political speech? Or does it cross over to hate speech?

Quite honestly, I have never heard this before... that "get the hell out" is an equivalent to hate speech.

Is that why the old girl is being reviled? Because she was rude in her choice of words? Really?

vincent,

I didn't go back and listen to her again, but the impression I got was that she meant "All Jews get the hell out of the Middle East.  Go back to Europe, or wherever else you came from." As in the entire state of Israeli shouldn't exist.

I think that steps over the line.

Firm, oh yes, I am quite sure that's what she meant. To my mind that is political speech not hate speech.

But, I received the following email from a friend:

"Remember, The jewish experience in Poland & Germany was anything but idyllic. The fucking poles took great delight in killing whatever Jews the germans missed. Suggesting that they go back to what was a cemetary for them is a wish that they all go up in smoke.Fuck her , her relatives , and her whole fucking tribe.!!!"

Now that makes a whole helluva lot more sense for the outrage than anything I saw on this thread or in the news. Not much to do with "get the hell out" but quite specifically to do with where she was returning them and what their experience had been.

Yep, that crossed the line.

I dont agree with this, the Jewish population of Europe has been persecuted for over 2,000 years.
