I like octopodes - amazing creatures.

Not sure I'm quite so keen on that particular one though.

Well I watched the final and it confirmed one thing to me...soccer/football is the 3rd most boring sport to watch on TV

I would bet you favor hockey as the most exciting. Yes? But on TV I can never follow the damn puck. Also, hate all that BS fighting in the Pro game.

TV commentator this morning (was a Brit guy) lamented this was a terrible World Cup game but said the finals usually are because teams play too conservatively due to high stakes. A bit like our Pro Football final. Often boring. He went on to remark that the Dutch played like thugs and the referee gave out too many or too few yellow cards. I'm not sure which he meant but he avowed there should be two referees in so important a game. Would appreciate comments from you knowledgeable footie fans.

There have been some dire games (England v Algeria for instance) and some excellent games (Germany v Uruguay for instance). The final last night was about average I'd say apart from a few brief moments, but then both sides are cagey for obvious reasons.

As for the cards issued, I dont think the referee had a lot of choice really but to caution (yellow card) so many and to dismiss, (send off) one (red card, issued on second caution to the player or at first instance if the player does something bad enough), given the way the match was going. The Dutch were the prime movers in the dirty play and for a simple reason - to do their best to intimidate a Spain team that was better. That Spain responded is regrettable but understandable.

Happy to help Vincent.

With luck, we can cure you! I prescribe a weekly innoculation of Man United or Chelsea ('cause I'm selfless like that) to start August.

And remember, it isnt just whats going on around the ball that you need to watch, its the whole field and where everyone is, the feigned runs to draw defenders off and the keeping of the ball in one area to draw players in so leaving someone free and unmarked the other side of the pitch. In the Germany v Uruguay game for instance, it was obvious Kiessling was being set up to score (as he did) some minutes before he did, if you were watching the whole game.

I must admit I enjoyed the world cup this time. I do see the athleticism in the players and can understand why people are so passionate about the game.

Maybe I am influenced by my upbringing but it is not as exciting game like American football or hockey. The players must be extremely conditioned and have excellent coordination but the game is far too slow and theatrical. The players have a limited skill set but they are extremely good at that skill.

The one big turnoff for me is the theatrics. A toe is stubbed and they fall to the ground in pain…or there is no contact at all and they play like they are dieing trying to get a foul. I find this part of the game disgusting and infantile and an embarrassment for the sport.

But all that said I will be watching four years from now and hope they clean up the game.

Butch

I actually saw a Wolves match on my screen once much to my astonishment. I couldn't imagine how it got there! I understand Wolverhampton has not been a stellar team but as I recall they were winning

But E, the feigned runs and watching where every man is on the whole field just doesn't translate to my TV screen. I'll have to see if there is a live match in my vicinity somewhere, unless of course you have a spare guest room

I know, I know. Fat chance of that. :(

Yes, the conditioning must be supurb, especially at that level. Not to start a flame war here but I agree about the boo hoo fall downs and the somewhat limited skill set. Hard to get our British cousins to look past the slowness of baseball and appreciate the skill needed to hit a ball traveling just 60 feet at 95 mph curving and sliding into you or away, depending on the physics of the spin.

If anyone has missed it here is the late, great George Carlin's dissertation on baseball vs football. Enjoy! He was so funny.

Wolves (Wolverhampton Wanderers) used to be one of the top teams V. And this season, starting August, theyre back in the top flight again. Probably go straight back down, but there you go.

Theyre also one of the local teams here - a lot of rivalry between them and West Bromwich Albion ("West Brom" or "the Baggies").

Broke my grandad's heart when I was about 7. I had two kits for xmas, a Wolves one from him and a Man U one from someone else, and I chose the Man U one as my preference.

I have a few grand stashed. I'm wondering what to do with it now and it may be an executive box at Wolves or W Brom. Not that I support either, but theyre local and of course there will be lots of matches with other teams through the season there that we could invite customers and potential customers to. Not sure how it would work but something I'm thinking about.

@ Wolves, they're in the Premiership atm, which is the top 20 of ~40,000 league teams.

You did read my post?...I said football and hockey...but I agree baseball is slow but i still love it with all its warts...as you do soccer. Baseball has a longer history...at least as a mass sport with millions of followers...That is part of the charm of the grand old game.

I can look up and tell you what a batter did for a particular game in 1923...everything from strikes and balls to bases and errors and fielding percentage. There is nothing like that in soccer and they will never catch up.

But of course each to their own.

Butch

I think the match I happened upon was Wolverhampton vs West Bromwich Albion, E. Was 2 to 2 when I clocked off if I remember with Wolves in the midst of a comeback.
