Vincent writes : I am not excusing some while condemning others. But you say we as white people have “ historical standing as oppressors” The black guy you mention is in the same position as me. Almost certainly at some point in the past black people have oppressed other people. But while you link me to vile deeds, the black gentleman you spare. The only difference between us is our skin colour. You link me and all whites to oppression of others, yet the same charge is not made at black people You certainly are excusing some while condemning others, and it is based upon skin colour. That makes you a racist. quote: quote:
You dont know whether he had historical standing as an oppressor. He may be of a line whose tribe oppressed another in Africa. Slavery is still practised there to this day, or is that to be forgotten because of his skin tone. This statement is terribly lame in the face of what happened in American history. It is quite embarrassing. It is not lame at all. The point reveals you as a reverse racist. quote: If all white people are to be held responsible for the behaviours of some white people, then all black people should be held responsible for those of some black people. For you it seems to boil down to this. All whites are guilty, because of what some white people did centuries ago. Even though todays white people played no part in those horrors. Meanwhile, blacks should be respected, and no mention is made of any respect for whites. Again you are putting words in my mouth that I never said. I have put no words in your mouth at all. You certainly are advocating group guilt. You said that white people have historical standing as oppressors. The obvious implication, is that living whites bear guilt. You are advocating group guilt. You seek to create guilt where it does not belong. And just as carefully, you avoid the fact that black people have done awful things in their past. But that is to be avoided, for it does not assist your silly argument. I gave some examples in reply to tazzy's question. It was not meant to be all inclusive. And it was intended within the context of this thread about racist jokes not beyond that as you attempt with this silly rhetoric. My silly rhetoric ? That really is funny ! The problem here is that you apparently have no understanding of the racist history of America and of its lingering effects/animosities. If you had the slightest bit of awareness of the trauma my country has been through during this last sixty years in our attempts to throw off prejudices you would realize just how feeble and irrelevant your comments are. Sorry, hate to get personal like that but your rambling on about group guilt is so 1970s and most of us are so past that. I do have some understanding of American history, its British equivalent is little better. All nations have unpleasant histories. People living in the present should not be held accountable, or be made to feel guilty about what others did long ago. I would say your ramblings were feeble, and unforgivably you seem to wish to cause others harm by linking them to crimes they never committed. There are people enough out there with depression and low self esteem. Are you really comfortable peddling this drivel ?
