ORIGINAL: TheHeretic Just having a spot of fun, with a serious story, LadyE. I also enjoy bringing up "Sheets" Byrd to remind Democrats of their own hypocrisy when it comes to politicizing racism. Not quite as much fun as Ted Kennedy and women's rights, or Frank/Rangel/Jefferson when it comes to corruption, but since the only member of Congress who held membership in the Klu Klux Klowns was a Democrat, it seems worth noting. As soon as I saw the title of the thread, I knew it was a Republican trying to distract attention from the racism of his own party. That would be the party of Trent Lott, Strom Thurmond, Jesse Helms, Jeff Sessions, and the "Southern Strategy". You have to be really completely ignorant of American political history not to understand that the segregationist vote of the American South switched parties around the time of the Civil Rights Act. Byrd is one of the guys who did not switch, but instead grew to understand the failures of the south around race. He had his problems, but history will forever credit him predicting the Iraq war disaster in advance and speaking out against it. Hmmm, if you can say that Republicans are all racists, can I say that all Democrats are American hating Communists? Firm Where did she say all republicans are racists?
