Write about your forebearers, not 'forbears' [unless you're a tetrad of fat hairy gay guys]
Say 'affect me', not 'effect me' or 'impact me'. Say 'skim' not 'scan' when you're reading quickly.

Say 'liberry' or 'tagger' for library and tiger, or 'touch base with you,' and I'll break your nose.

But then, I have trouble with Italian words: cappuccino and broccoli. We all have our pecadilloes!

It's "I COULDN'T care less". Not "could care less". Not sure why, but that irritates me.

Also, if I'm ffffriends with the spelling-challenged person, then it doesn't bother me, if I don't like them, then I add it to their list of sins.

Hopefully this isn't a double-post, my pc is acting stewpid.

This is a casual message board, so typos and grammar errors don't really bug me (although I like to tease about some of them in my journal).

One "word" does irritate without exception: irregardless - hurts to type that, let alone read it or hear it.

ETA - to defend "conversate" I will say that just because it gets on my nerves doesn't mean it's inherently wrong. The dictionary is a record of language as it evolves, not simply a prescriptive rulebook.

The Spanish second person formal "usted" derives from "vuestra merced" ("your mercy" - comparable to "your honor" used in English) which then went vuesarced -> vusarced -> vusted -> usted. Language evolves, and 100 years from now I'm nearly certain "conversate" will be in the dictionary, and the pattern will homogenize into -ate/-ation endings.

lol..well, it still beats the "said" thing. I really can't help it I have a horrible habit of correcting people when they do that. Yes, even him. . He is getting better..

ETA - in my dad's defense, it worked. By the time I got to university and took English with supertastically strict and scary Sister Marcy I was able to laugh with her at constructions like "they gave the job to John and I."

Sister Marcy. She was so win.

Status: offline 		What really bugs me isn't spelling or grammar as much as the wall of text without paragraphs or rational sentences. I would guess just from the comments I have seen over the years that 50% of the people here don't read wall of text posts that are formatted appropriately, I can't imagine how high it is for those that aren't.

Yeah, my little snarkling is sitting on my shoulder with the angel bound and gagged and the devil telling him to do it for the lulz, but this is the main issue I have with posts like this.

The nun I mentioned earlier, Sister Marcy, had impeccable grammar, as far as I could tell. I didn't mind her slashing my papers with red pen because she really knew what she was talking about.

I have never seen a rant about grammar on the internet that was grammatically flawless. I'm sure I missed a few things in my redtexting, even. But I think the point's well made. Something about not laying in bed smoking weed naked if you live in glass houses. Or something.
