This makes me wonder, when and why have we lowered our standards?
'...when and why did we lower our standards?', surely?

'When have we lowered' doesn't sound right.

Hey Elisabella,

You are right, my post is sooo full of grammatical mistakes!  I wish I would have had a Sister Marcy, perhaps my post would have been error free.  We all have our own crosses to bear.

Hello Folks,

In having a conversation with a friend, we were talk about grammar, spelling, etc.  In reading a post, what irks you the most, a spelling error done on purpose, ie, "prolly";  What word always sticks out for you?

How does a person's use of grammar and spelling affect your view of the person, and the post?  Or does it?  I was told once long ago, all we have are words on the net, so it's important to attempt to try to get it right.

I'm curious if I am the only person that gets irked when reading posts.

Elizabeth

This is a fast reply as I didn't read all four pages of replies. The highlighted part above immediately jumped out at me. Here is a topic started solely to talk about the irksome nature of careless writing and the first sentence of it has an incorrect word . Am I "irked" by that? No. I just think it shows that everyone, grammar nazi or not, occasionally makes silly mistakes and it's nothing to get ones blood pressue up about. Hell, I'll bet I've made some here just now myself

PROLLY NOT.

Ok. seriously, on the net , no it doen't really bother me. Text and slashy type bother a bit.

Ofcorse I am a shitty typist and a worse speller. Here I am more interested in the idea behind a post. If it has merit, I am likely to cut the poster some slack.

In person I hate bad grammar. " I don't have none" and shit like that.

See Liz.. Jeff can't spell for shit but we love him anyway

She was seriously one of the best teachers I've ever had. Once I wrote a last minute paper for her, and I really didn't have time to do much research so I basically repeated the same things over and over in different ways, and she gave me the paper back and told me if I needed an extension I could have one but she was not going to accept that paper from me. Lawl.

I think 98% of our class hated her and 2% loved her. She was one of those tough teachers that really does have a lot to teach to people willing to pay attention.

I think Jeffff just made a new friend...

The one word that I HATE to see used incorrectly is "discrete" instead of "discreet".

And misplaced apostrophes. I'm ok if apostrophe's are missing, but if they are there but in the wrong place, it's like chewing on aluminium foil...grrrrrr...

I try not to get bothered by what is on the net, here or otherwise.   People are imperfect, as a rule, not everyone can or should live up to another persons standard.

There are times when my fingers fly so fast errors are made, it happens.  I try to correct myself, but often I am sneaking online in a few spare moments during my day and don't always have time for proof reading.

I am not sure where the future will lead us, with text speak and slang, but I feel like my grandmother wagging a finger and talking about "in my day" all the time, :)

Bottom line, how someone else types, speaks or generally conveys a point, isn't worth my time to critique.  I have more pressing things to be concerned with, such as trying to complete the task of painting our deck in triple digit heat!

What really gets my goat is when a sub says, "Ya know, I give like the bestest blowjobs ever."

Then you get one and it is God awful. Pisses me the fuck off. Makes me want to murderate her.

Is this your way of showing us that you're secretly submissive, Domi dearest?

Cause we all know whining is not resolvable with dominance.

(Well *someone* had to take the bait. What can I say? I'm baitable.)

Word on the street is that your game is the only thing tight about you.

I believe the above sentence is grammatically correct.

The only thing tight thing about you.

Given that your particular street is in Chicago I am not particularly disturbed by this-I have never been to Chicago. I have no plans to go there. The word on the Chicago street matters little to me.

At the moment the street happens to be Broadway. In an area noted for a large gay population.

If gay folks don't know tight, no one knows tight.

I am willing to take their word for it!

Text speak makes me wonder why that individual just can't type the word out. One 'u' is plenty, but reading that multiple times in a post is overkill.

Have you noticed that when someone asks a question and someone answers it a third or forth person will then come along and say exactly the same thing in a ever so slightly different way?

What is that all about, how many same answers does a person need?

It's like we are talking to elderly people with hearing problems, I say it's like we are talking to elderly people with hearing problems.

Well in this particular context the OP was asking for people's individual opinions-so people repeating the same thing allows her to get a consensus, no?

I'm talking more about common sense or common knowledge questions such as "How do I do this on this site?" or "Why is this happening when I do this bla bla bla?"

Questions that there are only one answer for. I understand sometimes two people post at once or some people posting don't read what others have written but it seems more widespread than those occurrences.
