100% of the "pro-ana" population would be mentally ill as anorexia is a mental illness. Comparing the two is like comparing apples and... fungi. As far as I know, BDSM is no longer considered a mental illness. I do think that some use BDSM to cover up personal issues.

What I am saying is that the mentally ill make lifestyles choices. I picked an example where it's easy to see people with a mental illness being attracted to groups that accept them or are at least not judgmental of them. So how do you know that mental illness exists equally in the vanilla and kink worlds? Is it possible that people who commit self harm to deal with a mental illness might be drawn to BDSM? Is it possible that such people might be drawn to BDSM as a way of committing that self harm?
