I think that since youre actually allowed to pick your own name on here, picking something as "icumuswallow69" creates a bad impression. While I might be attracted to this swallowing I certainly wouldnt like to engage in conversation with this guy. Im sure I missed out on talking to some decent people but it's a bit of a turnoff.

MaamJay -> RE: Screen names and their effect (7/11/2010 11:42:37 PM)

Like the others, I am put off by overtly sexual names, those that name things I don't like eg scat, pee-drinking etc, and be less likely to respond to sissyslut and latexluver as I'm not heavily in to those kinks either. Neither do I want the worthless ones or the depressed ones! So yes, names are an important first impression, and do create a certain mindset in the reader and so should be chosen with care.

~ FR ~

Firstly someone's screen name has little effect on the way I view them with few exceptions such as a new poster trying to lecture us on how we respond or the name gives the impression that they are a heavy weight Dominant. I tend to read their Op more carefully before I respond ad will try to check their profile. Those with no profile showing have lost 90% of any brownie points I may have originally credited them with).

Secondly, I am usually curious as to why someone chooses a screen name. Those who have obviously chosen one to reflect on their personality or who they are in real life rate the highest and those who are creative in designing a screen name rate highly too. I also enjoy those who use a play on words like our beloved SocNot appears to have aptly chosen his name. In any case there are many which cause me to smile.

It is the character and personality which comes across in their posts which I use to rate them and to decide if I will read every post they make and others like DomiGuy which cause me to permanently block. Others I read if the thread interests me as I scan the thread contents and often enough find that someone gradually grabs my interest by the way they process some question and respond..

BitaTruble -> RE: Screen names and their effect (7/12/2010 1:21:11 AM)

Since I usually stay on this side of collarme (as opposed to the personals side) I'm not affected by screennames too often as I respond to posts and not really the person behind the post more often than not at least until they become a regular contributor. There has been the occasional screenname that I thought was exceptionally clever but nothing that really puts me off if their posts are educational or entertaining. Were I looking for a partner, that might change. I'm not crazy about Himselfs screenname but it's pretty accurate if somewhat one dimensional and he rarely posts to the forums anyway and isn't looking for anyone in any event. Now, if he started complaining about the email he gets because of his screenname, then I would point out he has no one to blame but himself for it since it invites a certain sort of mindset. I've had the same screenname since the old per use days of Prodigy and AOL and I'm not about to change it at this point. If someone is put off by it no harm, no foul. I think it's fairly accurate and well reflects who I am off line.. Justa BitaTruble (on rare occasions.) [;)]

I definitely think ID's has an effect on how people can view you or things they think you may be into. Due to the fact of text being what it is, a username is a first impression of sorts. A username is something you should put some serious thought into. Speaking from experience. LOL

graceadieu -> RE: Screen names and their effect (7/12/2010 5:46:35 AM)

It definitely does affect how I view someone, at least as a prospective date/partner. If someone has a name like "cumslutwhore69" we usually just giggle and don't even bother looking at their profile.

IronBear -> RE: Screen names and their effect (7/12/2010 5:56:24 AM)

Possibly, I should consider changing my name to something like "SillymarriedOldFart" which is perhaps accurate and may even stop those winsome nubile females from the Middle East and other areas constantly not reading my profile but begging me to accept them as my loving slave for life and ideal sex toy to use how I will.....

Awww my dear Brioni clad gentleman...I'm certain they aren't referring to you. I mean, your id serves a purpose, as it does appear that you are in need of some "head"

Thanks, I thought I went a bit light-headed when I came up for air, it must be the heat, I’m so hot!

But seriously, do we have to be serious? I like the funny stuff: names, posts ... childish humour is still humour isn't it. Given that most on CM live millions of miles apart and many are not searching for partners, I think the most emotive or “touching” communication is humour.

abuddingdom -> RE: Screen names and their effect (7/12/2010 8:06:05 PM)

I've taken close note of screenames since coming in to the scene a few years back. I admire a clever one, and though a clever screename isn't a requirement to catch my interest it will go a long way. On the other hand, some screenames are not only far from clever they are downright offensive and sometimes just immature. I'd most often pass up on exploring a profile with a name like squirtsendlessly or something totally unoriginal and unimaginative like beat me or needs a Dom(I just made those up as examples). Of course, there's always the chance one will miss making contact with someone cool that way but I think if you're going to be out here then put a little thought and effort into a screename. It's literaly the first thing people are going to see......

I've given serious thought to changing mine, as it isn't accurate anymore.......

jujubeeMB -> RE: Screen names and their effect (7/12/2010 8:20:29 PM)

My old Dom's screen name was the thing that pushed me from "should I talk to him?" to "definitely talking to this guy." Granted, his emails were superb, but it was the screen name that really gave me a perfect insight into his intelligence, wit and creativity. Wish I could share it, it was so good. But after all the talking about him I've done on these boards, that wouldn't be fair [:)]

-FR-

I judge people by their icon more than by their name.

Unless their name is really dumb.

I tend to regard anybody who uses Master/Sir/Lord in their nic as too full of them selves to be taken seriously, and since I mostly hang in P&R I whenever I see a nick with a "cuck" in it I assume another batshit right-winger[:D]

For some reason this applies to men but not to women.  (the Master/Sir/Lord thing)  I see a lot more respectable women with Lady or Domme in their handles than I do men with Master Sir or Lord.

Nineveh -> RE: Screen names and their effect (7/13/2010 12:03:48 AM)

I know that who's profile I choose to look at is usually determined by the names on the flipside.  Interesting names I check out and then possibly message, boring ones i usually pass.  Kinks I share I'll check out, because at worst it's a possible playmate.

submissivemale22 -> RE: Screen names and their effect (7/13/2010 12:11:06 AM)

personally, i value ingenuity a lot. if a girl doesn't have a super creative screen name like me, im not going to bother with her.

Arpig -> RE: Screen names and their effect (7/13/2010 12:21:31 PM)

Not in my case, I view the Lady/Mistress/Goddess type names the same way as their male equivalents.

PeonForHer -> RE: Screen names and their effect (7/13/2010 12:52:12 PM)

I don't think that's fair, Arpig.  Female dominants need titles like that because they're only women, and therefore feel less confident.

Jeffff -> RE: Screen names and their effect (7/13/2010 12:55:17 PM)

Female dominats are just girls who have yet met the right man.

heartcream -> RE: Screen names and their effect (7/13/2010 1:09:08 PM)

My nick has a bit of a story to it. I like the story but the name does come out kinda curdled. I dont love my nick, but I do like the story.

Some nicks gross me out more than my own. Ones with the word 'piss' in them I find pretty difficult to remain present for, for exmaple.

I like the forums because I can get a bit of an impression about someone beyond their nickname.

I do like a clever one though, although none come to mind haha.

I like the avatars too.

afkarr -> RE: Screen names and their effect (7/13/2010 1:27:36 PM)

I once called myself old fat sub, because I believe in truth in advertising, but the only people who were interested were named sirwanksalot and masterbater. I seem to attract a slightly higher caliber if mail with obscure mythological references.
