Yes, my bad, that was poorly worded.

Is that how black folks determine things?

I want to be authentic!

You call police about a disturbance, something you feel threatened by, etc.  If it makes you feel better that to cops came out, did a report, and went on their merry way, I see no problem here.  They're doing their job by aiding the public.  I also expect them to explain to those men that the behavior they're exhibiting is disrupting the peace/making people uncomfortable.  He was walking around with a friggin' nightstick.  I'd be a little unnerved and uncomfortable as well.

Would you be equally as unnerved by someone walking around in front of a polling place with his hand on a holstered gun?

I gave you the link earlier regarding testimony before the Civil Rights Commission, which you obviously did not read.

In the Arizona minutemen case the circumstances were far more egregious and no prosecutions resulted because it is very difficult to make a case based on voter intimidation.

My question is where was all the conservative outrage then?

From a November 21, 2006, Salon.com article:

On Election Day, a posse of three men in Tucson, Ariz., proved that the Wild West still lives.

The group, which was three strong, and allegedly composed of two anti-immigration activists, Russ Dove and Roy Warden, carried a camcorder, a clipboard -- on which, they said, was information about a proposed law to make English the state's official language -- and a gun.

While one man would approach a voter, holding the clipboard, another would follow, pointing the video camera at them. The third would stand behind, holding his hand to the gun at his hip in what activists on the other side called classic voter intimidation tactics in a precinct one local paper had previously declared the bellwether of the area's Hispanic vote.

- From a November 8, 2006, Austin American-Statesman article:

In Arizona, Roy Warden, an anti-immigration activist with the Minutemen, and a handful of supporters staked out a Tucson precinct and questioned Hispanic voters at the polls to determine whether they spoke English.

Armed with a 9mm Glock automatic strapped to his side, Warden said he planned to photograph Hispanic voters entering polls in an effort to identify illegal immigrants and felons. The Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund reported the incident to the FBI.

- From a November 8, 2006, Tucson Citizen article:

Volunteer election monitors say three men with a video camera and a gun were intimidating voters at various polling stations throughout Tucson.

From about 9:45 a.m. to noon Tuesday, the men approached Hispanic voters as they attempted to enter Iglesia Bautista Kairos, 4502 S. 12th Ave. in Precinct 25, said Diego Bernal, a lawyer with the Mexican American Legal Defense Fund.

LGBT

This old queen finds it amusing to see this abbreviation appear in a thread about politically correct naming, because "LGBT" is an embodiment of that very phenomenon.

Time was, we had a simple, short, clear word--"gay"--that meant someone who fucked someone else of the same sex. Nice and clear, and it fit handily on a button. But then all the dykes got up in arms because they didn't feel "gay" covered them, so we became "gay and lesbian" or "lesbian and gay." (Lots of greenhouse gas was produced arguing which word should come first.)

By the time the bis started whining, we were all too tired to argue, so we just stuck them on too. Ditto for the transgendered folk, whose link to the "gay" cause has never been entirely clear to me anyway.

I'm starting to think we should all just settle on being queer.

I remember when 'gay' meant happy-go-lucky. I remember when we all sewed rainbows on our clothes because they were pretty. I remember when pink triangles meant not much at all. Being 'queer' meant you were a tad not like the norm.

Maybe make up an entirely new word that fits on a button?

You are a wordsmith DC got any ideas?

You're really quite funny when you pretend to be stupid, Ken. And the squirming to change the subject... delish!

How about actually explaining how someone can feel threatened by a weapon they don't know is present?

Never once in visiting New York did I have someone exclaim to me that they are "Italian-American". I am the third generation of American from an Irish family (the Keeleys, formerly O'Keeleys, but getting a job was easier without the "O'", cousins to the Kellys-so I'm told). And not a damn one of us, blond or red headed, drunk or sober, in Georgia or New Jersey, have an inkling to call ourself "Irish-Americans" because, damnit we're Americans.

No, it's not about fitting into my neat little box. It's about my experience. My experience tells me that groups from other ethnic backgrounds like their food the way they like their food but treasure being 100% American and don't have a need to call out being "discriminated" against or finding another damned thing wrong with their now politically correct term of identification.

Neat how it works out to dismiss a person's conclusions from actual experience as racism.

Well bully for you,  I am so happy you have lead such a sheltered life that you have never been exposed to such things.

Unfortunately when my friend was running his construction business In New York there were always issues.  One of the top of my head.  He sent a group to do some mason and plaster work.  He get s a frantic all form the person he was doing the work for.  See the crew were great at what they do.  A fine set of craftsman who just happened to be Jamacian.  This is the direct quote, "They can't be here this is a Jewish neighborhood".  Notice he didn't even say Jewish American.  Seems the neighborhood only really wanted a Jewish contractor working in and around their homes.

I know a large group of people living here from Boston who identify as Italian American.  Especially among themselves.  They shop at stores that bring in products from Italy and celebrate as if they are still in the old country.  Funny part is most of them have never set foot there.

I never referred to you as a racist so I don't know where your sly little remarks come from.  You do know Boston has been one of the most racist cities in America?  I may not know much but I do know when I am around some of these people that "fucking moolie" when directed at a black person is not a term of endearment.

Jasmineinbloom -> RE: I am not a racist. (7/14/2010 7:17:18 AM)

Hi BoiJen. Your thread has been on my mind since reading it last night. I'm so sorry you've been hurt because of who you are by ignorant people. It takes pieces of our soul away when we are hated for the way we were born. I can't even begin to process little you being chased and beat up. How frightend you must have felt. I can't imagine a parent laying a hand on their child let alone breaking a part of her precious face.

You seem so bright, so thoughtful, I would think any parent would be damn proud to have you as a child. I would think anyone from any race or culture would appreciate and honor unique beautiful you.

As a bi-racial (yeah, I hate these terms. it's like I'm a racial bi-product) older woman who looks white but raised in an all black community, I can relate to being subjected to brutal behavior simply because I looked different. I can relate to a hateful father who hurt me badly. What I've had to conclude years ago for my own sanity is that anger eats me alive. Desperately praying for acceptance, for people to stop hurting me because I was different literally made me mentally ill. I had to evolve or die. At this point in my life, I don't see race as a human factor. We all struggle with identity. We all want to be accepted. I've decided to be the "acceptor" and not worry about how I am precieved or how others go about rationalizing or obtaining their own acceptance. We're all wierdos in someone elses eyes. That's why I choose to love. I've learn to heal myself by not being what I was taught to be. Hateful. I see beauty in everyone. I try to help and listen. I adore my children and support every part of their being.

When I was your age I was still sorting out garbage inflicted on me. I hope you are being loved and supported on your journey. I'm hoping you continue this path. It get's better.  You're a good person. You're not a racist.

Owner59 -> RE: I am not a racist. (7/14/2010 7:30:12 AM)

When I saw the gun toat`n jerk-offs at the tea party/lunatic fringe rallies,I imagined a Dave Chapelle Show skit .

A huge crowd of tea-baggers standing around with their racist posters and ugly Obama`s a nazi signs and t-shirts.

When all of a sudden,a group of young,angry looking, armed black men who also happen to be with the tea party movement come upon them( wearing the same racist t-shirts ,the one`s whith Obama as a witch doctor,bone through nose and all [:D]).

But the reaction of the white middle class, middle aged ,pudgy-middled tea baggers is to run screaming in fear,knocking over the fleet of hover-round ride`n tea baggers.Pandemonium with a laugh track.They don`t see the t-shirts or signage,they only see black men with guns coming toward them.[:D]

Camera falls back on the young, armed black tea-baggers......with looks and comments of "WTF??" "Hey,we`re with you guys,wait up.Hey! " [:D]

Wow!! You guys can really kill a thread with all of this serious talk.

Jeffff and I are planning to simultaneously bang MissA as part of our community outreach program.....Soon there will be little bronze Doffffs running around.

They will enjoy Popeyes and Cubs baseball....It's the whole ying/yang thang. It would be too one sided for them to enjoy the Sox.

Jeffff -> RE: I am not a racist. (7/14/2010 7:46:54 AM)

I believe you mean the FIRST PLACE Chicago White Sox.

Opps..." White" Sox... my bad

I hope the mods delete this offensive post.

What's you're theory on the lack of color within the SM community?

Mine has to do with a massive influx of individuals who are focused on their Star Wars roleplaying and learning the vulcan nerve pinch...or some shit. And I think it's like a comic convention....99% white folks there too. Well...except for...
