Wants us to attack NKorea and Iran because they are the remaining two of the three "axis of evil" members. Whatever happened to the concept of a Just War? The Republican split into three factions seems more salient than ever: the fiscal conservatives, the social conservatives, and the neoconservatives? Which faction will emerge in 2012?

Whatever became of America First Conservatism? Where is Pat Buchanan when we need him?

Oh yeh and we are in real danger of being taken over by sharia law, he warns.

Newt's a bit of a strange one, and I've not understood his appeal among the family values side of the party, with his divorces and philandering.

Sometime I think he pops off with stuff just to keep in view, better for those offers for speeches and donations and such.

BTW, if Iran's pursuing a nuke, they're strategically smart in some respects.

The USSR was a totalitarian regime with abysmal civil rights.  But we never invaded or bombed them, 'cause they had nukes.

N Korea's a totalitarian regime with abysmal rights, but we never invaded them, 'cause they had nukes.

Same with China.

If Newt were honestly mad, we could pity him.

He is just cynical and craven, trying to sell a book and testing the winds for a Presidential run in 2012.

Yeh, but beat the drums of war with careless talk and young men and women die.

"Gone" mad? Shit. He never had far to go. It couldn't have been more than a 2-minute walk at any given moment in the last 30 years.

He's a flake and always has been.

The male equivalent of Sarah Palin.

Maybe we can get her to dump Todd and hook up with her true soul mate.

Newt should stick to writing alternate historical histories...he's actually quite good at it....but as far as his politics are concerned...Lucy hit the nail on the head,he's batshit crazy.

I believe he was right but in fact could not operationalize what he said. That is, there was an Axis of Evil, Iran, Iraq, North Korea. Well we're one out of three. And people ought to think about that. If Bush was right in January of 2002 -- and by the way virtually the entire Congress gave him a standing ovation when he said it -- then why is it that the other two parts of the Axis of Evil are still visibly, cheerfully making nuclear weapons? And it's because we've stood at brink, looked over and thought, "Too big a problem."

His meaning and intent seem pretty obvious, Will. What alternate conclusion would you draw? Was he only being philosophical?

Yes, probably so. The Republicans present an interesting picture leading into the 2011/2012 primary campaign. Romney the fiscal conservative, Palin darlin of the social conseervatives, Newt making a pitch for the neocon wing. And may I make a pitch for Joe Scarborough to lead the Buchanan America First wing (for which I have some sympathies)

What (or who more properly) is your best guess?

Yes, Newt and Sarah are the Paris Hilton's of politics...famous only because they are famous.

I am beginning to enjoy their wild suppositions though...with early indications of hoof-in-mouth disease.

I'll give them both this much.........

Oh, and Romney will blow him away. Way too much free speech in the bank. Now and after he loses the nomination, Newt helps the dems just for being exposed and similar to with Palin I say, will cost all repubs...votes from independents.

No he was being strategic, but he didnt even hint at tactics, and to read any into what he said is speculation at best. In fact suggestions of attacking Iran would be a sea change from his oft stated position of economic sanctions. AFAIR his position on attacking Iran has always been one of 1. Strike only their missile bases. 2. Let Israel do it.
