You presume Iran would launch nukes without fear of retaliation. You presume there would be no retaliation. We presumed Saddam had WMD.... oops!!

Ah yes, look at our past history: mexico, spain, nicaragua repeatedly, panama, haiti, hawaii, china and korea repeatedly in the 19th century and early 20th century, the Philippines - a three year counterinsurgency, vietnam of course, and grenada - a formidable foe .... really, I could go on and on. We were even in Russia in 1918 or 1919. Yes, we have a long history of invading/occupying little nations. But what of russia or china in 1945 - 19now? Just a little too big for us, hey? We sure have had troops on the gorund in a lotta places. Have a look:

Wars are fought for money, marbles and chalk. Your understanding of why wars are fought is fatally flawed.

Well g'damit! I guess Harry Truman, Gen'l Marshall, and Gen'l MacArthur didn't get your memo in time to call off that nasty nation building they did in Japan and Germany after WW II. Or maybe, as you say, that one was not serious enough to fight.

Viet Nam is of limited use as an analogy; you libs overuse it.
What has gotten Americans killed is sticking around under very tightly written rules of engagement.

Valid point.
But... check the ROEs. Could we pacify Iraq as we did Germany? Yes, if we were willing and able to destroy (not merely defeat) the entire region. We cannot do it with foreign fighters poring in from all sides without consequence to the nations that send/supply them.

That Japan is an island sorta simplified things and skews the analogy, n'est cs pas?
