Newt Gingrich doesn't feel that way. In a radio interview today, he said he wants the national government to step in and stop the developers from building the Islamic community center by whatever means necessary.

"I think the Congress has the ability to declare the area a national battlefield memorial because I think we should think of the World Trade Center as a battlefield site; this is a war," he said, apparently thinking that if Ground Zero was a national park, Park51 would be restricted from building near it.

I think that Newt is grasping at straws, but why has he not made a fuss about the adult book store and strip club within sight of ground zero? Would those not be disrespectful to the memories of those who died in the twin towers?

Badmanbad -> RE: Islamophobia in America (9/3/2010 9:07:34 PM)

There are a couple of points I haven't seen mentioned in this thread that I thought might add to the debate.

1)  The area around Ground Zero, in lower Manhattan, where the proposed Mosque / Cultural Center / whatever is to be built, was known as late as the 1930's as "Little Syria".  The population at that time was predominantly immigrant Muslim.  So, there actually is a historical reason to build at that site.

2)  There are apparently funding issues in raising the $150 million dollar cost of the building.  The comptroller of NYC has stated that the building might be eligible for up to $70 million in bonds if the developers can pass the tax-free-status test as a charity/non-profit.

However, paying interest, which would be required  if bonds were issued, is against the teachings of Islam and this has actually been used in federal court as a reason for an Islamic man to escape paying interest on penalties assessed by the I.R.S.   Even if you think the mosque is a good idea, do you think it would be fair for NYC to issue bonds for its construction which would then have to be paid off by the citizens of NYC and New York State?

Just wondering...

Wrong, the population was predominantly Syrian and Lebanese Christians.

I would absolutly claim that not all Germans were Christians. Nor were all Germans National Socialists. It would be hard to say all Germans are anything but German.

What sort of learning disability would make one think I said anything close to what you are asking about?

Or do you just spout nonsense unrelated questions?

And o59 brought up the Holocaust, not I. Though you seem to be in favor of mocking the Holocaust and using it for ideological gain. Don't know why.

Dont be an arsehole ( theres a nice Compound Noun for you )  I have never mocked the Holocaust and challenge you to show where I have.

I do owe you an apology though, as you didnt mention it first. Then again neither did Owner59 if you care to read back.

Canada
IN THIS STORY
Places
Two US TV networks have refused to air a controversial advert condemning plans to build a mosque near the site of the 9/11 terror attacks in New York.

The advert is funded by the National Republican Trust, a conservative group not affiliated to the Republican Party.

Entitled "Kill the Ground Zero Mosque", the video calls the proposed mosque a "monstrosity" that will invite further attacks on the US.
...
In emails obtained by the news website Politico, NBC Universal advertising standards manager Jennifer Riley wrote that because it did not make a distinction between terror groups and the religious organisation behind the mosque, "the ad is not acceptable under our guidelines for broadcast".

Well if you join in with someone who is mocking it, you are too. Which you did. If you can't grasp that, oh well. The liberal lack of reading comprehension is becoming legendary.

But you have shown us many times how you feel about the Jews, so its not a surprise.

And arsehole is not a compund noun. It's one word.

Personal attack from you again. I didnt mock anything.

You are not only stupid but a liar. Show me one post where I have been antisemetic. What I have done is spoken out about the outrages taking place in Gazza ect.

Your lack of intelligence is showing. You are the one who challenges people on compound nouns, yet fails to understand just what a closed compound noun actually is.

Closed compound noun  = Two words linked to make one word.

luckydawg -> RE: Islamophobia in America (9/4/2010 2:17:25 PM)

your legacy of posting regarding the jews is clear for all to see ps. And we all know what ect means.

and it is pretty clear that you are using 2 different terms CCN and CN, which are distinct, though related.

What does that have to do with the price of tea in China though?

I brougth up the compound noun issue because a poster was intentionally changing a quote, to try to make an idoelogicall point.

Other than attacking me, why are you?

So you cant find any post where I have done as you claimed......Thought not. Thats why i called you a liar. Now you are suggesting ect has some hidden meaning, something you chide others for doing.

A closed compound noun is still a compound noun. You need to quit while youre behind.

Im not attacking you, thats aginst the TOS, I am attacking your posts, which is within the TOS.

No you don't, you do not need ECT, although some here might benefit from it, the ultimate electro play

Where do you see me claiming anything about you?

Other than you joining o59 in mocking the Holocaust.

Are you seriosuly argueing that the National Socialists were a Christian orginization working for Goals defined by Christianity?

Of course not the idea is stupid.

Thats what you started talking to me about. Perhaps you are not able to recall a few posts ago.

And caLling me an areshole seems more like an attack at me, rather than the ideas in my post.

Hippiekinkster -> RE: Islamophobia in America (9/4/2010 6:35:39 PM)

I don't know if there is a mosque near Dachau, but I'm fairly certain it wouldn't generate the kind of irrational mouth-foaming that right-wingnuts like to indulge themselves in. Germans are, in general, much more tolerant than Amis. There wouold certainly be opposition from the international Jewish community, and German Jews, of course, most of whom live in Berlin, I believe.

The primary difference is that Dachau is dedicated as a Holocaust-Denkmal, whereas the Twin Towers site is not (AFAIK).
