Training ??????????

Where did this term come from? For those that have a fair amount of time in this path we walk..were you ever trained?

For those relatively new folks that "seek" to be trained by their model Dominant...what do you think it means?
For years this term has raised the hackles on my neck whenever it comes up in conversation of in some profile as I grope for a sense of what it is or how it is to be employed.


For some it is meeting tests; for others it is being subjected to being broken and the list goes on. In your view is it necessary?

What say you on the subject?

Training is absolutely necessary, from the Dominant that is to be served.

I suspect that most training is for the Dominant to get his jollies.

I don't frequently use the word. But when I say that I "trained" Carol, it comes down to a few areas:

  • Teaching her to be more submissive when that is appropriate. In other words, teaching her to trust more than she had when a trustworthy person was involved as well as generally teaching her to be more accepting of "submissive" as a personality type.
  • Teaching her to be less submissive when that is appropriate. Generally, out in the world at large, Carol gets pushed around by random strangers a bit too readily for my tastes. I recognize that this very thing is what makes her my slave, but I'd at least like to see her learn to moderate that knee-jerk "must submit" response.
  • Teaching her about good leadership. Carol will never be a leader, but I'd like her to know how to recognize good leaders so that if I die she has the best shot possible at finding a future partner.


The day-to-day crap like how I want my coffee prepared just seems a bit too simplistic to call "training" to me. I call that "conversation".

Training is a part of everyday life. Training on a job, training children, training submissives, ect ect ect.

I view training as teaching. How does he like his bed made? The toilet paper roll hung? His socks folded? His coffee made?

All these, and so much more, are part of a training program.

I say, if I expect someone to serve at a high protocol dinner, I can't just expect them to just know what that entails unless I step up and make sure they have been taught how to do so.  Same with any other job that anyone expects someone else to accomplish.  What do we call that in the business world?  Training.

Training is for SPECIFIC skills. Serving formally, the things I like and how I like them, that sort of thing.

Most of the people who talk about training as if it is the be all and end all seem to be talking about dogs, not humans.

Every dominant is different in their desires, expectations and requirements in regards to the one who serves her/him and the degree of formality will vary as well. In training, I provide the knowledge and skills that allow my [slave] to serve in a manner that pleases me personally. This includes various protocols, slave positions, how to properly set a table for meals, etiquette and how to conduct themselves in various situations while at home and in public, to the simple task of serving me a glass of water, etc. While this may seem like a lot of work, it's the beauty of service that feeds my hunger far more than play time and the rewards abound for all involved.

Ruff, ruff -    training is for dogs.[:D]    For me, all that is required is a polite request, and it's filed away and remembered.

Of course, i do have a short term memory, and use it. Those that don't may need reiteration in regards to dominants desires.  I guess that could be considered training - but it seems a bit ................ short bus to me.

To me, it just means being taught the dominant partner's preferences and any protocols they like to have in place.

Sometimes the short bus deviates from it's normal route and stops where least expected.

Uhhh  Gang can we kind of lighten up on the "short bus" references a little.   I know there have only been two so far, but, I have an autistic child, and find it just a wee bit hurtful to read.

Even a polite request is training.

Training is what occurs when you are taught to do something new. I am trained in martial arts. I was trained to ride horses. I was trained to fold his underwear the way he likes it.

I don't see much difference really. Now if anyone else wanted to train me to suit Val's needs/wants, I'd call that useless training.

Agreed. And if needing something to repeated/demostrated more than once is short bus, we probably need a lot more of them. I have yet to meet a single person who got everything right off the bat and never needed to be shown/taught twice.

If I met that sort of a person, I'd probably check to see if they were a robot. I like my people to be... ya know... human. "To err is human" and all that.

I agree. I wouldn't necessarily say I needed to be broken.
I did however need to be trained to control my body language a bit better. Master and I enjoy having a little fun in public now and then and I can't make a total spectacle of myself, therefore I was trained bit by bit until I could carry on as though nothing were out of the vanilla ordinary. Master did not allow me to have fun in public until I was trained and could prove it to Him.

I do have to admit that the word "training" puts a bad taste in my mouth. Yet, if the word "teaching" is used I'm okay with it. Seems to me that animals are trained, but people are taught by a teacher. Yes, it seems like splitting hairs but we can't always help the personal connotaions that certain words seem to have.

Training is necessary.  I am talking about a dominant training a submissive to his likes/dislikes.  I am not talking about some sort of universal training, as I think that is a bunch of b.s..
