More good news from the Gulf!

quote:

Microbes ate BP oil deep-water plume: study

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – A Manhattan-sized plume of oil spewed deep into the Gulf of Mexico by BP's broken Macondo well has been consumed by a newly discovered fast-eating species of microbes, scientists reported on Tuesday.

The micro-organisms were apparently stimulated by the massive oil spill that began in April, and they degraded the hydrocarbons so efficiently that the plume is now undetectable, said Terry Hazen of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.

These so-called proteobacteria -- Hazen calls them "bugs" -- have adapted to the cold deep water where the big BP plume was observed and are able to biodegrade hydrocarbons much more quickly than expected, without significantly depleting oxygen as most known oil-depleting bacteria do....

FEASTING ON HYDROCARBONS Long before humans drilled for oil, natural oil seeps in the Gulf of Mexico have put out the equivalent of an Exxon Valdez spill each year, Hazen said.

Another factor was the consistency of the oil that came from the Macondo wellhead: light sweet Louisiana crude, an easily digestible substance for bacteria, and it was dispersed into tiny droplets, which also makes it more biodegradable. These latest findings may initially seem to be at odds with a study published last Thursday in Science by researchers from Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, which confirmed the existence of the oil plume and said micro-organisms did not seem to be biodegrading it very quickly.

However, Hazen and Rich Camilli of Woods Hole both said on Tuesday that the studies complement each other.

And let me show you to a wonderful bridge in Brooklyn that can be yours for the bargain price of $2,000,000. Please bring cash, no checks.

If you read the issue of 13 August 2010 issue of Science, while this is a nice hypothesis- there's no evidence to back it up. Essentially the plume water contains between a few part per million to parts per billion of crude- you couldn't tell the difference between a glass of plume water and clean water with the naked eye. While Hazen has claimed that this bacterium is doing a great job, nobody knows where the plume went since the storms hit. In short- this claim could merely be sampling error.

Sanity,

Would you drink the water from the plume? Or maybe give it to your dog or a child relative?

You are just loathe to admit that offshore drilling operations not only provide us with scarce and badly needed domestic jobs that pay well, but they boost our energy independence considerably and they can be nearly ecologically neutral.

nearly ecologically neutral?

How many acres of wetland have disappeared because of this spill?
How many large slow to mature animals were killed by the spill?
Are any Brown Pelican nesting sites in LA still above water?

Impressive! Wrong on every point.

1) Most jobs in the oil industry involve pumping gas at the retail level, a job that certainly doesn't pay well.
2) As long as we remain wedded to oil, we will not be independent in any significant fashion from OPEC. The Middle Eastern countries have far larger, more accessible reserves, and will be able to control the price to make domestic production more expensive. By delaying the transition to renewable technologies- an arena which we might be able to be a major producer if we would get off our duff, continuing to produce oil places the US further behind other countries developing the next energy technologies.
3) Ecologically neutral? Neither the extraction nor the consumption of oil is by any stretch of the imagination, a renewable process since it took tens of millions of years to produce the stuff.

Despite the hyperbole the BP spill certainly isnt turning out to be the disaster that leftists had hoped for, and if the overreaction from the federal government continues all the lost jobs will undeniably be very hard on the struggling Gulf economy.

From the AP:

quote:

New microbe discovered eating oil spill in Gulf

This microbe thrives in cold water, with temperatures in the deep recorded at 5 degrees Celsius (41 Fahrenheit).

Hazen suggested that the bacteria may have adapted over time due to periodic leaks and natural seeps of oil in the Gulf...

And again, from the article I quoted for the OP:

quote:

...natural oil seeps in the Gulf of Mexico have put out the equivalent of an Exxon Valdez spill each year, Hazen said.

Large quantities of oil occur in the Gulf of Mexico naturally, and it has a newly discovered natural microbial enemy - which is extremely good news for everyone except those on the far left who are unwilling to accept the science for purely ideological reasons which make sense to no one but themselves.

From Science- issue cited previously p. 735 "The report states that according to early signs, the oil is "biodegrading rapidly" quickly. It provides no documentation for that claim.....

Science without data is opinion- not science.

This disaster was originally wildly underestimated- perhaps some of the same folks are putting the spin out there that there's no longer anything to worry about.

There's an old saying if it's too good to be true, it isn’t true. I simply don't believe it. I'm very confident oil money paid for this “advertising”.

Bull-fucking-shit. The results being reported are based on more than 200 samples that were collected from 17 different deepwater sites in the Gulf. The research was conducted by the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, a U.S. Department of Energy national laboratory located in Berkeley, California. The full press release is at lbl.gov:

Study shows deep water oil plume in Gulf degraded by microbes

And from Science:

scientists are now starting to think the oil will be gone much sooner than people thought before. "We're talking days to months."

Ahhh... so... as long as someone doesn't give their source on an internet kink sight you will not believe it.

Did you ever think about looking for it yourself?

Did you turn on television or radio today? This story was all over the news.

The science and the study aside....you guys were alright with Sanity's "nearly ecologically neutral" claim?
Seriously?

All is well.

Nothing to see here folks, just move along.

I also live in Florida and the charter fishing boats that BP contracted still come into harbor with their hulls coated in oil.

The only bullshit here is why conservatives try to deny it.

Go down to the docks and talk to the people that make their living out there and then come back and tell us there is no oil.

The bullshit here is you changing the subject to the remaining surface slick, conservative politics, and some weird hallucination of being told "there is no oil", when nobody said that, and both the thread topic and the post you're responding to are about the underwater plume.
