Seriously though, we are going to have to get off our asses and start working on ways to make alternative energy sources more efficient and cost effective. While they cannot (yet) replace oil, that fact should simply make us want to use them more and push for better technology, as doing so will give us more time before we hit the wall and there simply isn't any more oil.

Hell, people have been using pieces of foil coated cardboard and the sun as their main cooking method for years, a change largely accepted simply because they were running out of traditional fuel and had no choice. Even though solar cooking is not a perfect solution, it has tremendously eased the strain on a disappearing resource. That is a lesson we should learn, and soon.

Actually, this dovetails nicely with Marini's thread about where new jobs will come from.

Strictly on topic, I hope the reports of no injuries in the platform explosion are accurate.

I'm all for the alternative energies being explored used and improved.
But the large problems of electric vehicles remain, total recharges take 8 hrs, and ranges on a single charge are still around 120 miles.
Better than what we used to have, acceptable for the way many people live.
But that turns the 4 hour trip to see my mom into a 2 day trip with two recharges each way.
So this would require that people have a primary gasoline vehicle for vacations and road trips which are a HUGE cultural thing for many of us.

Hybrid is a great technology and as the cost comes down so that we can all afford them I'm sure more will buy them.

Weening off oil is a great goal but it's not feasible YET without HUGE cultural and personal sacrifices.

Question here how many chemical manufacturing fires go unreported, how many explosions in other industries never make it to the national news so that we can all argue about how they should be better regulated?

here is one idea that will reduce oil usage, and feed a lot less dangerous reaction than nuke, and while we are at it, why does it gotta be an all electric car, why not little engines in them to run generators (instead of alternators) and keep the batteries far more charged extending miles?

These things we can do today.  Right now.
