I cannot really fathom how fucking retarded this statement is.

Who could order such a thing of a US serviceman?  (Here's a fuckin hint, not even god himself).

Bravo Domiguy.   So now we are calling acts of cowardice  "having guts"?

It's easy to stand on American soil and make threats, knowing others put their lives on the line to afford us this safety.   Kinda like making comments on a message forum behind the comfort and safety of a screen.

I fear for the future and hope to see our troops pulled, home safe and sound, enjoying what they fought for.

So you have no empathy when a symbol that someone holds as sacred is destroyed intentionally to make a statement against those people... but it pisses you off when someone destroys your sacred symbol.... um, okay

What she said.

A symbol is a symbol. The Bible is a symbol. A cross is a symbol. The Torah is a symbol, the Star of David is a symbol. Flags, national status, etc - all are symbols. What strikes me is strange is that it's not that uncommon for patriotic Americans to burn the flag as a symbol of their protest and as a way of commenting about the government. I don't, personally, agree with it but it happens. So how come it's ok for us to do it but not them? How come when they do it it has to be "OMG WANT YOU TO BE DESTROYED" instead of them just being angry?

I also don't get why this is a "male" pissing contest.

AquaticSub, you hit the nail on the head on what I was saying, thanks for explaining it to juliaoceania.  Now for the rest.

I would never burn an American flag, nor anyone's flag, but I am tolerant of Americans who are teed off about the government and merely choose to burn the flag to vent their feelings.  I wish everyone who did horrible things would decide to burn a flag instead, then there wouldn't be bombings, poisonings, or shooting at a president to get the attention of a movie star.  Also, I was just a kid during the 70's, but I was also living in California.  The older kids were doing stuff like that and I saw them for who they really were.  Protestors, not serious threats.

Why is it okay for us to do it but not for them?  If you want a logical reason, you're not going to get one from me, lol.  This was an emotional answer, same as...why could I call my sister a bitch...but if anyone else does I'll be pissed off at them.  I love my country and I love my sister, but I doubt the outsider burning my country's flag or calling my sister a bitch would have the same love that I do.  It is somehow more serious.  If terrorists hadn't taken out the twin towers and tried other things (my mother and sister held government jobs and had bomb threats and anthrax scares), then I probably wouldn't be concerned with non-Americans burning our flag.  As I said before, somehow it seems more serious.

As for my mentioning male pissing contests, wasn't it a male who desecrated a Koran?  The ones who burned an American flag...males?  That pastor who burned Korans...male?

The family member of mine who was so pissed off at our country being attacked that even at around 40 years old he joined the armed forces and asked to be sent to where the action was at...planning to be the one to take out Ben Laden personally?  Male.  His new wife left him while he was gone.

To be more fair minded, I'll keep an eye out to see if any women are out there burning Korans or Bibles or flags while journalists make a big issue out of it.

I still think it's mostly the men though...

I was questioning *you* not explaining things to Julia. I was agreeing with *her*. I find it extremely strange that it's ok for us to something but not another country. Let them burn the flag as an act of protest.

Furthermore, while the people in the spotlight are males, you can certain that the people backing them are not entirely male. To call it a male pissing contest seems strange.

I think you miss the point of my statement entirely....

I was trying to point out that you have an emotional reaction to the burning of the flag, and that is the same as someone else feeling poorly that their symbol was desecrated. I did not find it obvious in your original post that you were advocating that it should be "okay" for any symbol to be desecrated, only that it doesn't bother "you" when someone burns a bible, and therefore it shouldn't bother anyone else when a holy book gets burned...

It bothers me when holy books get burned. It bothers me much more than a flag getting burned. I am not a religious person, but the practice is much more offensive to me (mind you, I find all book burning to be despicable). Nations come and nations go, but ideas and concepts survive on. To me the destruction of the library in Alexandria was far more devastating to humanity than the fall of the Roman Empire.

We all have things we value, and I would hope that as time goes on we would show more toleration for each other, not less. Someone has to reach out their hand first and be tolerant. It doesn't matter to me who reaches out first, just that it happens. We are all human beings, here, after all.

As far as intolerance being a "male" thing, who raises men?

I'm not afraid of Islam, Julia. I'm just not a potential buyer. I do have issues with those who believe they are special though, and I believe there are highly educated fools willing to embrace any culture other than their own, even if that other culture is significantly more violent, misogynistic, superstitious, and ethically unpalatable.

I do fear suppression of free speech and religion. I'm quite the asshole, when it comes to these things. I'm perfectly happy to look at this jackass in the OP as nothing but a jackass, but if he winds up murdered because of it, I'll call him a martyr. So should you, but we'll burn that bridge when we come to it, I suppose.

I rarely post on threads surrounding the issue of Islam, or their "culture", etc. I am not a moral relativist, although I have been taught to shelve my immediate revulsion for some practices in order to understand them. This is called "cultural relativism". It does not mean I embrace those traits, or want to spread them, or want them to continue. It means i would rather understand the ground from which they arise, perhaps to prevent them from arising in the future.

Because I seek to understand the processes by which extremism festers and grows, I am hoping to create an environment that isn't fertile to spread radicalism of any sort. It is only by understanding the factors that lead to extremism that we can stop it. Blindly condemning everyone who practices a certain religion as extremists only creates more of them, so you feed that which you say you want to destroy... how ironic that is.

Now you can state that because I want to understand other people, other human beings, and I see myself as a human first and an American second, I am somehow against my own people. Some of my own people are Muslim... they are your fellow countrymen too, and yet you would want to preclude them from membership in our culture because of your ethnocentric ways...

Being American is not about being a white anglo-saxon. It is about being born on this soil, paying taxes, and contributing to your community.

"Being American is not about being a white anglo-saxon."

Way off topic question, but some americans were also throwing around an acronym standing partially for anglo-saxon......you guys do realise that the only anglo-saxons in the us are recent English immigrants?

Really, Julia? I want to preclude muslims from membership in our culture? Defend your assertion, or retract your lie.

Or, as with your regrettable comparison of the Islamic culture to hornets nest, are you suggesting that tolerance and inclusion demands giving special rights to a religious minority? Rights which infringe on those of us who like freedom from religion just fine? Is that because they might get violent? I don't think you want to go there, either.

Ramadan has just passed. I've seen little stirrings about recognizing Eid al Fatr as a legal holiday, possibly replacing Labor Day. I'm completely ok with that, just as long as nobody tries to tell me I can't drink alcohol or grill some pork ribs on my day off. Is that where you are getting the idea that I want muslims excluded from our culture?

You are the one that has made many statements about how different Muslims are, how violent their "culture" and religion is, etc etc etc...

You rant on and on how easily "duped" I am by accepting Muslim American student's assertions that they believe in being peaceful and denouncing religious violence... now if you did not feel that way, why did you say it?

Listen, Rich, you are attempting to pick a fight with me because I do not denounce Muslims as being religious extremists each and every one of them...want to have a pissing contest about who is more "American" or who is anti-American, seek it elsewhere, I am not into your petty bullshit,.

Anyone with half a brain would understand what I wrote... which was not about "Islamic culture" (whatever the fuck THAT is), but would understand I meant that prodding extremists with sticks is a bad idea. Again, you are assuming the only extremists are followers of Islam, which they are not, we have a few of them living here in the good ole USA

I get that idea by you claiming I am a "dupe" and that I am rejecting being "American" because I want to understand people based on their humanity and not only their nationality...

Go on, twisting in the wind... yanno, you are really good at dishing shit, very bad at taking it

Oh, Julia, you never change, do you? You never grow. You are 40 something years old, and you still want to think that student activists are a reflection of anything but youngsters who have not yet had their ideologies confronted by reality.

Reconcile your statements about what you say I stand for with my stated position on an Eid al Fatr holiday, or just drop the pretense.

It's too nice a day to light fires fires with you, when I could be lighting one in the grill.

But I really wish they hadn't done that. Something about burning a holy book just makes me...

Doesn't bother me one bit. Even as a Christian, burning Bibles doesn't phase me, it's just a former tree bound up into pages.

Unless they wanted to burn *my* Bible...because that one is mine. Unless they paid me enough for it to get a new one, then I'd hand it over and tell 'em to have fun.

The physical object is pretty meaningless. It's the content that's important...and the content is widely available.

I was actually really tempted to burn a couple Qu'rans this weekend for no other reason than to tweak the noses of people freaking out over it. Still might do it.
