ORIGINAL: soul2share One of the things I objected to when my son was in school was that in his math classes, instead of teaching them how to actually DO the math, they taught them how to use those million button calculators. When I was in math class, back in the Stone Age, the teachers wanted to actually SEE the calculations. I once asked him what would happen if he his calculator died in class, he said, "no problem, I have extra batteries", I then asked what if he didn't, his reply..."I'd borrow some from a friend". Plus, they actually let them use them during tests!!!!! So when he's working as an engineer, is anyone going to demand he figure out stresses and strengths by hand? No, he will use a computer to do the calculations. As he should. Thinking is more important than doing it by rote. What I can tell you all is that my kids have done in high school what I didn't do until college. Books that were graduate level at my university were 11th grade for my daughter. They are required to know a great deal more than we did at that age.
