Im sorry but i cant blame a generation for relying upon the tools the previous generation insists they utilize. Many younger people have no clue how to count back change. Is that their fault? Or have they simply not been taught in this swipe-the-plastic world.

By training i meant trained in how to put the cash given into the computer to come up with the amount of change to give back. Its a simple concept.

Thank you Aylee.

In some places you can lose your job for being just a dollar or two short. This girl obviously needed more training... which i fault the management for, not her.

This is true.

Counting back change or going even a bit further and reconciling your checkbook are not things that are really taught anymore.

Part of the issue that clerks have is that they are so used to doing things by rote.  And so when you hand them additional change it throws them off.

I find being patient and polite goes a long way in dealing with this.  It is really okay to not let having to spend an extra 90 seconds at the store ruin your entire day.  It the list of things important to me, making a minimum wage clerk feel bad about their-self and their job is not high on my list.  It is petty and wrong.

That bolded part made me snort! lol

There are nincompoops of all generations.  I do think that, in some ways, not having to memorize stuff makes ya brain lose something.  Your brain used to remember phone numbers, birthdays, directions, so on and so forth.  Now all you have to remember is which button to push.....

Damn barrel of tacts it is!

Oh I know there's a dumb ass born every minute, and it's been that way for years(shit, my gf's parents can't even read, and they're both in their 50's), but it seems these days it takes alot less to call your self "smart".(I'm always reminded of the movie idocracy every time I go to the store)

"memorize "
memorize my ass, counting change has to do with simple subtraction!

and we wonder why there's such a brain drain in our country

And if you are hiring, you need to require a two year degree to get the expertise you expected from a high school graduate in the 1970s.

We need to get the bar out of the basement.

One of the things I objected to when my son was in school was that in his math classes, instead of teaching them how to actually DO the math, they taught them how to use those million button calculators.  When I was in math class, back in the Stone Age, the teachers wanted to actually SEE the calculations.  I once asked him what would happen if he his calculator died in class, he said, "no problem, I have extra batteries", I then asked what if he didn't, his reply..."I'd borrow some from a friend".  Plus, they actually let them use them during tests!!!!!

So when he's working as an engineer, is anyone going to demand he figure out stresses and strengths by hand? No, he will use a computer to do the calculations. As he should. Thinking is more important than doing it by rote.

What I can tell you all is that my kids have done in high school what I didn't do until college. Books that were graduate level at my university were 11th grade for my daughter. They are required to know a great deal more than we did at that age.
