Excellent post. Lucy wants to complain...I think it was Lucy, it makes little difference...about illegals being discriminated against by conservatives. The key word is that they are illegals, right? She wants to complain about "people of color", I assume she largely means blacks, not having the same opportunities as other people? Like who? The vast majority of us went to public school. We read the same books, we received the same homework, we either did the homework or we didn't, and we became who we became. This is a conservative's problem? The problem, as most thinking people understand it to be, is that everyone is born with different abilities (thus the fiction that all people are greated equal--they are ONLY equal under the law, not genetics) as so people are going to rise to different levels. What was the line from "Caddy Shack"? "Well, the world needs ditch diggers too." Overwhelmingly, we are all afforded the same opportunities in this country. Who gives a fuck about the working poor? If our country cared about the working poor, we wouldn't have taxed corporate America into the arms of Mexico, India, China, Indonesia and a host of other countries. It used to be that a kid could drop out of college, work in the local foundary and actually buy a house. How many of you have seen a foundary lately? No...really...how many? The last "foundary" I lived by was actually an aluminum smelting plant in Kearney, NJ and like every other form of industry...it relocated. It relocated due to taxes, unions, property taxes, regulations (excessive or not, improper or not, whatever). Yes...there is working poor in this country like never before. Does anyone want to pinpoint when it became such an epidemic? Anyone care to quote Ross Perot? So fuck the working poor. Fuck them, fuck them, fuck them. This country created them in the last 20 years and all of us are losing ground; doctors, now lawyers, soon teachers and even cops. Enjoy the ride folks. The darkest part of the storm is still ahead.

At this point, I feel encouraged to go back to some of my old poly sci books and read more. And buy some new ones. Positive and negative freedoms? This is so logical I'm shocked it took so long for us to be teaching it in school. This thread has gotten too difficult to follow quickly, though. Too many claims in a stutterstep narrative.

What "service" is be advanced by the Tea Party that requires the government to issue a check to them on a monthly basis?

Answer what I asked you. What is your goal? Do you just want to spew your liberal, hand out, Nanny state beliefs or do you want a an exchange of ideas on the merits that seek to find a common ground? What the f*** are you trying to accomplish? If you want to debate the merits of a socialist nanny state vs. a capitalist state with a limited central government, I will have that free exchange of ideas with you. So...if the latter is your goal, answer the question. But do it quickly because it is late here and my last client just left so I would love to go home and maybe eat a little dinner and watch a little news.

Just what I thought, Moonbeam, you would respond with NOTHING which reveals your duplicity. I wish it were only ignorance. I wish you had no idea what the Tea Party (which really in the grand scheme of things isn't a political party at all but a mere reinvigoration of the Republican party) stood for. But you do. Read from some humbler poet whose songs gushed from his heart as showers from the clouds of summer or tears from the eyelids start. Who, through long days of labor (a concept unknown to liberals) and nights devoid of ease, still heard in his soul the music of wonderful melodies. Such songs have the power to quiet the restless pulse of care and come like the Benediction that follows after prayer. Then read from the treasured volume the poem of thy choice and lend to the rhyme of the poet, the beauty of thy voice. And the night shall be filled with music!! And the cares that infest the day, shall fold their tents like the Arabs and as silently steal away. Longfellow wrote some great shit.

Too many claims in a stutterstep narrative. not sure exactly what you are talking about but positive law is law that is coded and promulgated. negative law is not quite as specific and has different meanings but it is also used to contrast positive law in that they are not written, and rights fall into that category because you can add rights anytime you want up until you infringe on another.

No, not positive law - positive freedom. I.e., freedom to do things. Versus negative freedom, I.e., freedom from unwanted influences and/or actions. That's kind of a big fucking 'DUH!' I'm free to speak and free to not get murdered. Mostly. On the other hand, I'm not really free to go around murdering other people, much as I'd like to. Steps would be taken at that point. So, 'negative' freedom. It's brilliant in its simplicity. I imagine you're wondering why I might be excited over something so basic. Pretty much this: there are people in school right now who, if not told about how freedoms work this way, simply wouldn't get it. Freedom as we were taught in school was kind of a big fat Santa Claus.
