PA it isn't a hassle to update.
It is a point and click proposition.

I am guessing you had name brand software and let it lapse because to buy the latest version would have cost you $70 for the coming yr or so.

That is ok.
You can download AVG free. It is free and works well.
You can also download Malwarebytes and/or Ad-Aware; they are also free.

They have dispatched things my norton 360 have missed (like the fake antivirus crap)

Happy to help, as always.

It's still my fave of the free ones. Not usually as up-to-the-second as some of the others, but seems to give fewer false positives as a result.

Get it here:

http://free.avg.com/us-en/download-avg-anti-virus-free

I also use PeerBlock & Spybot Search And Destroy too (though SpyBot not as often) ... both also free.

Hmm.  A google search on the question 'Is Firefox safer than Internet Explorer?' reveals that a big majority of people still believe Firefox to be the safer browser.

Pfft.  Whatever.  Me, good practice and a good antivirus have always kept me scumware-free.

pahunkboy -> RE: Virus Warning ? (11/29/2010 10:46:31 AM)

Come to think of it- I am lost and upset when the web is down.

Last winter a pipe broke,  and I had no water for 3 days.... I was fine.

A few months back the power went out for an hour- meaning I had no net...   yikes!

And that's the single most critical thing; taking sensible precautions and not opening things from sources you don't know, running a virus-checker with embedded protection, keeping updates ... er ... up-to-date and generally not being a numpty will do for 99% of viruses.

FR

A buddy of mine in the business had a different approach. Multiple harddrives. He used Win 2000 advanced server and once loaded he would clone it. All files and such are on a second drive. The cloned drive with the OS is not connected. Somebody would have to damn good to infect that !

I'm not sure if I asked - is there a way to prevent the PC from reporting the browser version ? If there is, and these different browsers have different vulnerabilities wouldn't that impede infection ?

Alot of people swear by AVG and they make a good case. I have it on the other PC and will put it on this one shortly. One thing I heard about it, make sure you get it from AVG dot com. I guess at some point there was a counterfeit version out there that was actually a virus. Real AVG though, as I understand it (?) doesn't really depend on a virus list, I'm told it uses heiruistic (sp) reasoning to sniff out the critters. Therefore it doesn't need updates every two weeks or whatever. It's very unobtrusive unless it finds something. The only problem I've heard of is that sometimes it detects something when you're trying to install certain things, like the Paltalk software. Judging from what Paltalk does, it seems logical.

If you recall I mentioned that this box was just reloaded. It started shutting down randomly, but then it did it once after the reload. At that point I turned off ALL power saving features in Windows and it hasn't happened since. Could a virus or something have affected the BIOS and caused some type of error there ? Everything else seems fine.

Now I wonder if something like that happened to my old PC. I attributed it to bad filters (electrolytic capacitors) because it was to the point where I could hear noises in the audio when it was accessing the harddrive. But that doesn't mean I was right. Even MEPIS Linux had a problem running off the CD - it said "Something Wicked Happened". Then it said something about the system clock, or some such.

Incidentally, bash Linux all you want, but really if running off the CD it has got to be one of the most secure things going. I mean it is totally read only at that point. Of course there are drawbacks, like that it takes forever to do anything off the CD, and the fact I don't really know how to run it. I did leave the HD in and ran MEPIS off CD, and eventually figured out how to access the HD from it, but it was a big PITA.

Of course the whole issue is a PITA. This can affect that, that can affect this. Even in consumer electronics (brownwares) software and firmware problems are on the rise. That's right, almost like a BIOS flash needed sometimes - for your frikkin TV set ! Alot of them now have USB ports, for a thumb drive. Even a phone can get a virus now. I'm waiting for it to happen to cars, they might just start wrecking themselves. (though crazy drivers out there might meet the definition of a virus - for the highway)

WHy not surf in a local user account NOT administrator account.  Its locked down, you can't install shit, you can also install noscript and adblock in firefox as an addon.  Poof, no b.s. No need for A.V. software then either :)

pahunkboy -> RE: Virus Warning ? (11/29/2010 11:45:35 AM)

OK.   I am almost done.

Lemme say- I like that firefox is user friendly.

And  2. OMG- I am surfing MUCH faster NOW!

YippEEE!

No they wouldn't. At the point of transfer, any reasonably malignant virus would most likely replicate across the devices.

What he said.

Just don't be an r-tard on the internet and keep in mind surfing the internet is like sex: have fun and be safe to avoid nasty viruses.

My browser of choice is Chrome only because I don't like the UI of IE or FF. I like that Chrome uses the minimalist approach in its UI and seems to be fast than FF.

I use IE, FF, and Chrome when testing web sites.

pahunkboy -> RE: Virus Warning ? (11/29/2010 12:13:39 PM)

Chrome is my 2nd choice.   I use it w Firefox.

"No they wouldn't. At the point of transfer, any reasonably malignant virus would most likely replicate across the devices."

???

Maybe I didn't put it right. If the boot drive gets infected it gets formatted and recloned. The backup is only physically connected then. Other times it is literally not plugged in. A virus would have to come from the data drive or the MB itself. The infected drive has already been formatted and/or repartitioned. Of course the cloning process does that again, but just to be on the safe side......... At that point, the backup has never been anywhere to get a virus or anything. I imagine he has to scan the data drive, but even if it's infected there is no registry reference anymore to call it.

I'm not trying to contradict, just question. One thing I know about computers is that there is alot I don't know about computers. How would a virus get there when the wires are not connected ?

I like Chrome's HCI (a lot - I think it's the nicest layout and look & feel of the lot), but it still doesn't work seamlessly with as many sites as IE does.

But given another couple of versions, assuming they don't depart radically from the design, and I think it'll be a really 1st class browser.

Or I didn't interpret it correctly. Not to worry.

Oh right, then his data's toast (on the original machine) in that case. All he's doing is saving himself a small amount of time in re-loading the OS and drivers. Hardly an effective anti-virus regime.

If he has no critical data though it's a viable, if somewhat esoteric, solution. OTOH, if he hasn't got any critical data, why is he bothering with a PC in the first place? [;)]

You said originally that "All files and such are on a second drive" - if that's his data, then at whatever point he makes that backup he will most likely transfer whatever virus is on the primary drive to the backup one.

Computers without data are just paperweights or, at best, clever calculators. And you can’t protect data without anti-virus measures in an open-loop system (well ok you can, but it all gets very odd).

Termyn8or -> RE: Virus Warning ? (11/29/2010 12:42:04 PM)

"I use IE, FF, and Chrome when testing web sites. "

Why not Mozilla and whatever Macs use ? Because of the slim market share ?

I really don't like the new IE, maybe I should try Chrome. I'm sick of the nags trying to get me to update the browser.

I guess I'm just an old fuddy duddy. I like old things. I got Win 95 in about 1998 or so, didn't get 98 until it was absolutley necessary. I literally ran 98 to death before getting XP. I downloaded the updates for 98 so I had the they pulled them. I got SP2 only because my new MB needed it. I suppose I should get SP3, but it will be simply a file, until something won't run without it.

Sorry I didn't address this directly; the problem with infecting data is that it's difficult to tell when it happens without good anti-virus software; so you can take a backup, then disconnect the "wires", but if the original copy had a virus then most likely the backup will too. And if you're not backing up your data at all then, unless re-inputting your data is a small job (in which case why bother with a PC?) then you're just as stuck.
