Another thing . . .

It's always irritated the tits off me whenever I've heard some farty politician say, in support of yet more surveillance on us, "Well, someone who's honest has nothing to fear, does he?" It gives me great pleasure to swing exactly the same line right back at them.

I know where you're coming from. It's all about control being slowly forced on us all I think.

I think it's extremely "convenient" that the word is out he may be up on a rape charge.

I should check that out for myself...just in-case that's a rumor...bbl

Today's news on that is that his UK solicitor is fighting his extradition charges to Sweden.  He's said that the case is 'full of irregularities'.  I don't think our cops will hand him over unless everything looks squeaky-clean and proper.  But it's a complete waste of energy people baying for his blood in the assumption that once he's been taken out, the problem is dealt with.  I've read of four new groups setting up to do the same thing as Wikileaks just in the last couple of weeks.  This particular Pandora's box is now open and there's no shutting it.

I sure hope so, I really do.

Between hearing stuff like this, the states sovereignty movement and a number of other goodies..I'm hoping what I'm seeing is a much needed change on it's way.

Really, the rot (or what governments now see as the rot) set in as soon as people started learning how to use computers.  Very skilled computer experts are like nuclear experts - they can sell their services to the highest bidder, or they can work for themselves; either way, the potential impacts are enormous.  Governments should have kept as tight a control of the world's computer-whizzes as they've always done with nuclear-boffins.  But again: tough titties.  It's too late now.

European authorities are searching for Assange as we speak. He will be arrested to answer a rape charge. He is in hiding and on the run.

That rape charge and warrant is all a bit too convenient .... wouldn't you say?

I'm nominating Assange for Australian of the Year! Go Julian!

If he is accused of rape then that is probably something entirely separate from the leaks. People seem to forget that if it's some grand global conspiracy to ruin his reputation then you need someone to play the part of the victim. There is also more than one alleged victim, which is more than is required for a simple global government conspiracy. My feelings, from general observations, are that he is an arsehole that does the occasional good but mainly for his own ego. This is realistic because people are not either saints or sinners mostly they are a mixture of both. Now his alleged victims must hear from those external to the facts how their accusations are a smoke screen, that's not on. If there is a case to answer he will be extradited. Let us not see grand conspiracies where there probably aren't any.

TBH,  everything about those rape charges cuts very much both ways.  Yes, it could be a conspiracy and this would be a very effective way of destroying him.  Killing a man makes him a martyr; convicting him of some low-down and despicable crime will make him scum - the sort of person no-one would want to listen to and the sort of person who no-one would want to be like.  It was said of Princess Diana that if MI5 had really wanted to 'neutralise' her influence, they'd have soiled her name in a similar way rather than murder her.  But I wouldn't even call this kind of activity 'conspiracy'.  It's pretty standard behaviour for governments who want to eliminate the prestige and influence of someone they perceive as an enemy.  There's far too much hard, and recent, evidence that governments get up to this kind of thing for anyone to say, any longer, 'Oh no.  Governments don't act like that.  That's just lefty propaganda'.

On the other hand, he could indeed be guilty of these rape charges.  If so, he'll be protected by a widespread belief that they're all part of a conspiracy.  The truth is going to have real trouble getting through the miasma of suspicion, prejudice and politics, on this one.

I have to agree with you.

While I think he had every right to publish what he did, I've watched some of his interviews and he comes across as an egotistical sociopath.

It's just my impression but I can see where he could do what he is accused of.

Well I'm not personally convinced it's the best approach, there are plenty of other approaches for a government to take with this man. Additionally I wouldn't expect it from Sweden, it's not like them to be playing global power games, they leave that to the likes of FIFA. Just you try getting Sweden to do anything for you other than unfitted cupboards.

Possibly, but at the risk of derailing the thread, my guess is that the old bat and her husband let their guard slip once or twice, and Diana inadvertantly struck upon some kind of dirt on the royals, hazmat highly toxic grade, and her unwavering affection from the public convinced MI5 they'd never truly discredit her (particularly after the Bashir interview late in '95), whereas whatever she had on her in-laws could have destroyed the monarchy.

Old Liz gets frantic by '97, not about her grandsons possibly having a moslem step-father, but that Diana, after some champers and some careless pillow talk with her swarthy new arab beau, might let slip the dirt, he goes and blabs to Al Fayed Senior, who in turn has God knows how many connections throughout the Middle East, who would all love to be the first to bring down the monarchy of arguably the most notorious western power.

I can't help but wonder if they waited until the new boy Blair had his feet under the desk, a shitload of learning to do, and closed the show...

There is in fact a sizeable percentage of Americans (mostly Republican but also Democrats) who crave a dictatorship, a government that enforces order and mostly keeps them safe by any means necessary.

FR:

I still think that it was a black ops, and I now at a guess would say that HC is the puppet master. I also note that nothing of interest was divulged, like proof who truly murdered JFK. Just about the most interesting information in the lot is that politician X picks his nose.

I wonder what other news it was intended to distract attention from. And what among its many objectives was its main purpose?

It is certainly within the realms of possibility that Assange is guilty as charged.

But there are a number of disquieting features in this case including:
*The gap between the initial reports from the women concerned and the investigation;
*The time taken by Swedish prosecutors to decide to apply for a warrant;
*AFAIK, the Swedish authorities made no attempt to prevent Assange leaving their jurisdiction;
*The lurid media reports for the duration of this period;
*The claims that he is "in hiding and on the run". According to his solicitors, Assange voluntarily notified the British police of his whereabouts.
Again it is possible that there are entirely innocent explanations for all the above.

Media reports here indicate that Assange is anxious to clear his name. So sooner or later the facts will emerge.

Given the above discrepancies, and the way the whole incident suits certain entrenched interests, it might be prudent if we all retain a certain scepticism in this case.

The sex crime he's being charged with is having sex without a condom.

http://slatest.slate.com/id/2276690/

It really blows my mind that you people are debating whether or not you "think" he's guilty when you're not even aware of what the 'rape' is in this case.

Talk first, ask questions later?
