Haven't played since school, but might well take it up again, "Thugs game played by gentleman" and all. Much manlier than that pansy stuff the yanks mess about in with all the protective gear and the 80's shoulderpads...

Don't diss American Football. I've played both games (Rugby and US Football) and US Footie is a seriously hard game too. The stop-start, offence/defence nature of the game means you're playing in short, controlled bursts where you're playing flat out when you do play, and at the physical end of things (Tackles, Guards, MLB, OLB, TE, FB, HB, etc) it can get very dirty at the point of collision. You get a lot of one-on-one match-ups too, which usually leads to trouble.

In addition, having the armour means you go into tackles absolutely flat fucking out, with virtually no regard for the impact.

Now if you want mental, super-violent games, try Hurling, or Gaelic Football. You wouldn't get me playing either of those again as long as I lived, not for cash money. Fucking insane. Hurling especially breaks the golden rule of a peaceful life, in that one should never hand an Irishman a bit of wood and ask him to make his own entertainment. I've seen more lost teeth in hurling than any other sport, and that's with a gum shield.

LOVL !! Also pretty much explains why all those tinkers are toothless!!!

You either get it or you don't. And you definitely have to have played it to truly love it.

Thanks, I prefer having nice small and shapely ears instead of cauliflower ears, and I honestly don't want to look like Gavin Henson, and have you seen the size of their legs? I don't think that is a look that would remotely suit me, even without the mud splatters.

I only ever did a couple of practice sessions, coz an Irish mate of mine was in the team, and then used to turn up to cheer him and his lot on.

Seriously man, if you hadn't dignified it with the name "sport", half the field would have been up on attempted murder charges.

At one point one fellah absolutely shellacked the fuck out of one of the opposition, to much booing from the crowd. It took me a couple of seconds to realise that the reason for the booing wasn't for the almighty bap on the bonce this chap has just doled out, but was for doing it from an offside position!*

Absolutely card-carry crazy game. The only other guy I’ve ever met who played it and emerged “denta-intacta” was a German friend of mine, a quietly spoken pathologist, whose lack of regard for his own personal safety is legendary**. The man’s totally not right in the head, and picked the game up when studying in Dublin. “Ah, zis ish ein intervesting game, viz der schticks und zer bashing of zer heads! I am finding it jolly schtimulating!”. Fucking nut-job.

*might not have been "offside", but some infraction or other - I noticed that the "rules" seemed to be a bit free-form and avant-garde in their explanation, definition and application, or so it seemed to me as an observer.

** he once played 4 innings of baseball with a clearly and obviously broken tibia – “nein, ich fine – it ich merely und teenzy bit floppy. I vil get it sorted later, as ve haff no replacements left. Could you be zer schplendid chap und phone zis number (pulls out mobile, finds number); it ich der fracture clinic. Tell zem to varm up zer plaster for half an hour’s time”. I did so, and they thought I was a prank call until I told them who it was for.

I don't have cauliflower ears, although I grant you I do have legs like tree-trunks, and thighs that are about half a foot too wide for anything humanoid.

And if you think male rugby players are bad you want to see female rugby players. Or rather you don't.

It might not surprise you that H's thighs are as big as my uncorsetted waist, bloody 22" circumference when he flexes them (oh and that is a single leg). And he can't watch football because he's always on about those "Bloody actors - FFS mate, he barely touched you, stop rolling around on the floor and get on with it, you bloody whimp, for the money you get paid you should be playing and not acting, bad fucking acting!"

Yeah I've had to tone that down too or I find myself getting too shouty at the TV during footie matches.

These days I restrict myself to just a couple of "awww! Has ee hurt is little self? Mummy kiss it better" per half.

Ice Hockey is so much more civilized, that's one thing I miss about the US and especially Canada, good hockey matches

If I remember rightly, it's the fastest game played by people on their own, without motorised assistance.

Not a fan personally, but I'm not anti.

I love ice hockey and played a bit of street hockey (the one with inline skates) super game to play, great for coordination and balance and you do need quite a bit of stamina because it is a quick game, highly recommend it, gum shields and helmets are a Must! Oh the amount of skin I left on the asphalt....

My teacher , well one of them, used to say boreing is as boreing does. So, meaning if you're always bored you're probably a boreing person.
