Whatever happened to the 'top up' in top up fees?

That was the thin edge of the wedge I tells ya. Eventually the government waiter wass tilting the wine bottle of further education but the wine of knowledge wass no longer flowing.

There's been more and more to top up every time the last two governments cut university funding (that is: every budget). It's one of those incremental things that starts off slow but accelerates very quickly.

Woody-- tripling of the fees is a problem.

What good is it if no one can afford to go there?

Take the government out of it and let the tuition float to its market value.

Although it is a good mechanism to direct people towards the type of degrees that help society. I'm not really loosing much sleep about the humanities being underfunded in comparison to science and technology based subjects. Although students of artistic hand movements are up in arms about it. Then again I suppose that's looking at the University experience in a rather two dimensional way i.e. that it has to be about helping the person find a job rather than just furthering the student's and the University's knowledge.

I think the fact that mathematics and science a levels have proved less difficult to fiddle to improve the results is a factor as well: there's less demand for science degrees than for humanities ones. This isn't really the best way to go about fixing the shortfall in science students, though.

When I was younger, no lie, I wanted to be a train driver. Whenever we got the train we were going to the beach, unknowingly I was under the impression that train drivers spent the day at the beach. I didn't realise I'd be getting on those metal worms of death in the other direction towards the city every day.

Oh no.

I don't know what happened I could have been a train driver how hard can it be...

Press a button go....press a button stop...

It's not like you can get lost or need Satnav, and these days I wouldn't even have to talk to the passengers either because I could press another button to give them an automated message.

Who else in this thread has even mentioned the Crown, you cretin? What the fuck does the Crown have to do with the universities?
The inside of your head is not like other places, is it? I'm imagining a drawing of the Gaza strip with the left half drawn by Jack Kirby and the right by Leo Baxendale...

The Chancellor of the University of Wales is the Prince of Wales (a purely ceremonial post), it can be quite confusing for some Yanks to understand that Wales is actually part of the UK but not England, part of the island Great Britain... For most of them England is that island and all people there are English - I would pay such good money to see them walking up to a Scottish person, a Cornish person, somebody Welsh or Irish and say that in their faces, I'll bring the popcorn... Oh add to that that Charlie is part of the Royal Family (which some possibly understand as "the Crown") and you got them all confused and flustered.

I am amazed she even found the post- considering how it was filled with insults.   Filtering thru the insults makes it hard to find the point- that the poster makes.  (if any)

Some of us tho- have class, and we do not throw around personal insults at other posters.

..it goes with self respect.

Well, what was your point with the Crown then? I was only doing guesswork...

Could you enlighten me what you meant with it?

You are fine.   It was a general statement-  in other words- anything establishment could be a good portion of the blame.

If you say the Crown people will assume you are talking about the state prosecution services, makes no sense when it comes to education or university fees.

There is of course Royal Crown Cola.  That is the more important one.

It's also the bald patch on the back of someone's head and a form of dental restoration.
