ORIGINAL: hertz That's fine. If you want to live in a Police State, that's entirely up to you. Personally, I'd prefer not to be in a position where the state-sponsored thugs in uniform are no better than the people they are supposed to be protecting us from. Yes, there were some trouble makers in amongst the students, but I don't really expect to see their exact opposite numbers squaring up to them in the police lines. When gangs fight each other on our streets, innocents will always be the victims. The police should be better than the gangs. But they are not. In fact, often they are a damn sight worse. I don't want a police state - but I don't have an unrealistic expectation of how a demo can turn out in the same way as I know that things can fuck up at a football match or a gig. You want to live in a dreamy devilmaycare world where you can be devoid of responsibility for your actions then go ahead. Me? I am a bit more grown up about my actions having any number of consequences. Your expectation seems to be that the police will behave as disgracefully as those misbehaving in amongst the students. Your expectation seems to be that I will just accept that. Your expectation seems to be that not only should I take responsibility for my own actions, but, if I am at a demonstration peacefully protesting, I should also take responsibility for the people who misbehave. Your expectation appears to be that if I get truncheoned, then I should just accept it, because someone had to get hit, and I was there, so why not me? This isn't a war,you know,'us' against 'them'. This isn't 'Gangs of New York'. The police are there to keep order, not start a ruck with troublemakers and hit out at everyone who isn't in a uniform.
