truckinslave -> Self-identification (12/11/2010 8:03:02 AM)

As one result of our most recent presedential election, I found that I had confused my priorities. I had come to identify myself at least as much by my nationality as by other aspects of my being, and I did a little soul-searching as a result. I think it's relatively easy for a Christian in America to become confused, perhaps less so for other religions; but I came to a renewed personal affirmation of the classical ordering of priorities:

1. Religion
2. Family
3. Country

What say you?

mnottertail -> RE: Self-identification (12/11/2010 8:04:35 AM)

family
me
my country

religion dont figure in it.

tazzygirl -> RE: Self-identification (12/11/2010 8:22:22 AM)

you place your religion above your family?

truckinslave -> RE: Self-identification (12/11/2010 8:34:21 AM)

You have to, I think, if you truly believe.

I think there is actual conflict only in the extreme... but if my daughter became a Satanist....  I don't think there would be a lot of "family" left there.

tazzygirl -> RE: Self-identification (12/11/2010 8:37:32 AM)

And im just the opposite. My family is always first. No matter what my son may do in life, he will always be my son. I dont have to like, or approve, of everything he does, but i will always love him regardless. And, to me, that is the epitome of what religions who believe in a loving God teach.

mnottertail -> RE: Self-identification (12/11/2010 8:45:16 AM)

I agree.

Anton LeVey

(Jesus!!! can't even spell the devils name correctly)

truckinslave -> RE: Self-identification (12/11/2010 8:53:36 AM)

I did not say that I would not love her, but I also cannot see her, as a Satanist, having much lefty in common with me, or wanting to have much to do with me. And vice versa.

But if you believe as any Christian denomination, church, or sect with which I am familiar, God definately ranks higher in the pantheon...

tazzygirl -> RE: Self-identification (12/11/2010 8:56:01 AM)

lol now you know why, at least one of the reasons why, i do not follow a formal religion

To truly believe what, exactly? What exactly do you find worth believing about a religion that places your own family second?

This is a serious question, because what you just said is absolutely incomprehensible to me. I'd love to hear someone who thinks that way give a lucid explanation why.

ThatDamnedPanda -> RE: Self-identification (12/11/2010 10:12:31 AM)

My answer, though, is -

1. The people I love the most (some of my family, a few of my closest friends)
2. Other family and friends
3. Neighbors and members of my community
4. Everyone else in the world.

Fuck my country. My country is only a priority to me to the extent that it represents a broad extension of the community in which i live. It's a subset of "3," probably about a "3B."

truckinslave -> RE: Self-identification (12/11/2010 10:16:21 AM)

Your answer says nothing of either God or country.

Am I the only one that is going to put internet porn in their top three?

truckinslave -> RE: Self-identification (12/11/2010 10:22:03 AM)

A quick google found GW Bush, Major General Jack J Catton, and a book by theologian/pater familias/politician Ezra Benson in agreement with me.
Or, you might try the First Commandment.

mnottertail -> RE: Self-identification (12/11/2010 10:22:29 AM)

That was my ground zero, I thought it would go without saying.......guess I was wrong.

Actually, it says quite a lot about both.

And you wonder why people think religious people are nuts!

I dont need a former idiot president agreeing with me. I dont need a military general backing me up on religious faith. And lets not get into the politician end of the pool.

All i need to know is that i brought my son into this world. I had a hand in what he has, or will, become. I know that my love for him will never die regardless of his actions. And my own spirituality will never allow me to turn my back upon my own flesh and blood.

ThatDamnedPanda -> RE: Self-identification (12/11/2010 10:38:51 AM)

God - "Abraham, I need you to kill me a son."

Abraham - "Aw. man, don't make me do that. I've gotten kinda attached to the little fucker, ya know?"

God - "Abe... don't make me come down there..."

Abraham - "Look, maybe there's another way. Let's talk about this."

God - "Look, you can do what you want - but next time you see me comin', you'd better run."

Abraham - "Shit...."

God - (ducks behind cloud, giggling madly, and high fives Krishna. 'You da man, god," says Krishna, laughing hysterically.)

Abraham - "OK, I did it. Cut his heart out and everything, just like in the movies. We cool now?"

God - "Wait a minute, dude... you did what?!??"

Abraham - "Well... you said... "

God - "I was just fuckin' with ya, man!! Jesus H. Christ, what in god's name is the matter with you people???"

Can you point out the God and country parts for me please?
