Fast Reply:

We can put our "priority of identities" in neat, ranked little boxes, but the danger is that this is a simplification of life, and ourselves, really.

I could easily defend any rank ordering.  Likewise, I bet that just about any rank ordering can be successfully attacked.

I understand truckin's choices, and understand the logic and emotions behind them, and generally I agree with them, but realize that sometimes it's not always so clear cut.

Fine, tg.
I dropped this when you said you belonged to no "organized religion"
For those who have one, there can perhaps be a discussion.
You remain free to create your own belief system.

tazzygirl -> RE: Self-identification (12/11/2010 10:45:09 AM)

In part, i agree, Firm. The rest of my list can shift depending on the situation.

My family will always rank first.

Can you point out the God and country parts for me please?

Can you point out the God and country parts for me please?

First of all, I'm not sure how that suddenly became relevant. Your OP said nothing about limiting our answers to those contexts, or even referencing them for that matter.

Second, the fact that neither of those topics appears anywhere on my list ought to make it pretty clear where they rank in my priorities.

And third, even if that doesn't make it clear, the fact that I closed my post by saying "Fuck my country. My country is only a priority to me to the extent that it represents a broad extension of the community in which i live. It's a subset of '3,' probably about a '3B'," would seem to offer a rather telling clue.

I apologize for my misunderstanding; their absence was indeed eloquent.
And the parody of the Abraham story even more revealing.

God, unit, (family now) corp and country

tazzy,

I don't know your family, or their beliefs, but can you not think of any situation in which you would choose something other than "family first"?

Firm

tazzygirl -> RE: Self-identification (12/11/2010 11:15:56 AM)

I cannot think of any situation that i would not put my son first. That doesnt mean i would approve of any action of behavior, but i would definitely not be able to turn my back on him. To say there would be no family left.... no, not in my family.

Are people restricted to those three?

Are you willing to enter into hypotheticals to explore your meaning?

tazzygirl -> RE: Self-identification (12/11/2010 11:20:58 AM)

Sure.. go for it! [:D] But lets not go to the extremes.

Hey, we can't do this without going to extremes: it takes the extremes to measure the edges, after all.

tazzygirl -> RE: Self-identification (12/11/2010 11:25:47 AM)

As you stated, you dont know my family. If your extremes are outside of what i know about my son, then i will be quick to point out those unrealistic extremes.

FirmhandKY -> RE: Self-identification (12/11/2010 11:27:34 AM)

Extreme number 1:

You have discovered that you son is a serial killer, rapist and cannibal.  His targets are the underage female children of everyone you know in your life, but he has started with the daughter of the members of your church.  You've found his killing ground, found the gnawed, burnt bones of your preachers 11 year old daughter in the fire, and found the 8 year old daughter of another friend tied-up, with one arm sawed off, and cooking on the oven.  But she is still alive, and begging you for help.

Do you call the ambulance and the police?

Firm

tazzygirl -> RE: Self-identification (12/11/2010 11:30:26 AM)

LOL... well.. first the premise is wrong. We dont go to "church"

Second, as i have stated, i dont always agree with his actions, but i love him more than my own life.

I turn him in, of course, for both his own benefit, as he clearly needs psychiatric help, and for the community at large.

Yeah but they can be in any order you like. Most are going with the alphabetical option.

Fair enough.

Extreme example 2:

Your son has become a Muslim convert, and has decided to press Jihad against the Christian oppressors.

You discover that he has acquired access to confidential Homeland Security files, and now knows all of the ways to sneak through airport security.  Then you discover that his cell has acquired a dirty bomb from the Russians, and he is on his way to the airport with his co-conspirators, on a flight to DC, with the bomb, although he will not be flying only getting them through security.

Do you do anything?

Firm

Seems a bit weird. I mean, atheists end up with only two answers then? And also, God/s is/are family surely - besides the fact that family is restrictive in the sense that it is all encompassing.
