Status: offline 		The problem I've heard mentioned the most from upstate New Yorker's about NYC,is that they feel NYC treat's them like second class citizen's.For that fact,I've heard that from people from outside of New York state.I see that same additude displayed in this post.O,upstate NY should be so grateful that NYC is willing to give the rest of New York state alittle piece of the pie.If that little piece of that pie is alway's going to come with string's attached and an additude that say's"we're better than you",then keep you money.New York state also contribute's more than their fairshare toward's the rest of New York state.Yes,upstate NY would so fine without NYC.If you think upstate NY need's NYC so bad,then why is the Upstate NY economy in such bad shape?I'll tell you why,it's because of worthless high taxe's that upstate New Yorker's have to pay which usually alway's wind up going to NYC's benefit anyway's.It's the needless insane government red tape that usually clog's up the rest of upstate NY,that drive's away good paying job's.Don't think the rest of New York state need's to bend over for a bunch of loudmouth's from NYC.

Growing up in Chi, and still here. I never heard that one, but I just checked and it is now 12 degrees warmer in NYC than here, so it must be true.
Actually I hold no ill will or have any issue with people from NYC.
It's those damned suburbinites that say they are from "Chicago" when they ain't, that pisses me off....

Thats right!   The city charges an extra city tax on phone and utilities-  what a racket!

Next time you're in a dive bar in the Midwest go up to a table full of big burly bearded bastards (they're the ones who need civilizin' the most) and start giving them pointers on how to become a lil more coz-MOH-politan. :)

Thanks, I can just see it all now, my plane from Chicago to LA is unfortunate enough to have an unscheduled layover in The Twil - sorry, Topeka, and the hotel they stick us in doesn't have indoor plumbing, let alone internet access.

On the day that happens, I'll bear your advice in mind, all the while quaking in my Size 11's.

I can't figure for the life of me why your plane would layover in Topeka.  Kansas City International makes much more sense. 

Of course you are aware that those uncivilized louts of Topeka (otherwise known as Google, Kansas) were the ones that ended school segregation.  Brown v. Board of Education. 

And I am sure that you are aware of what the term, "Bleeding Kansas" refers to. 

Your stereotypes of the people in the mid-west are really screwed up.

Status: offline 		I'm originally from Chicago but have traveled to all 48 Conus, and I'd have to say I found NY'ers much nicer and friendly than I expected. Jersey people, well that's a different story...Forget about Maine, they're fucking weird up there.

I thought the most of the people of Boston were assholes, with the exception of a couple of cops who helped me out of a jam while driving my truck.

The people of  California I found to be snide and clueless as to what was happening in the rest of the country, and the people of Dallas Texas to be the rudest jagoff's I've ever met, we're not talking one or two people here, but dozens.

Simply because I enjoy when I shock them with how I don't fit into said stereotype. For example; I am from NYC and NJ.  I don't hang out at malls, wear blue eyeshadow, wear white boots and stone washed jeans, talk with an accent, know the Sopranos, The Jersey Housewives or the Jersey Shore dudes. I am not sullen, negative or unfriendly to strangers. I give good directions.

I do wear lots of black (the NYC uniform) and I actually love Bruce Springsteen, so that stereotype is true, because, you know, he is a musical god.

Snide as in sarcastic, mean, nasty unpleasant, malicious, spiteful, unkind, hurtful and cutting? Where in California? Surely not in San Francisco! Clueless, hmmm…. Not sure how that could be true. A subjective opinion based on a personal experience, I suppose, aye?

In my experience central United States or rather the northern region of the central United States east of the Rocky Mountains, generally including the states of Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Ohio, and Wisconsin were discovered to have quite hospitable folks to encounter during my visits to these aforementioned States.

I particularly enjoyed learning of the differences among people from different States. I did not ever encounter any mannerisms from those who dwell in the Midwestern area of the States that could be considered rude or otherwise. Instead I enjoyed my visit to every State I traveled to for work related assignments. In fact I have many fond memories from those traveling times through the Midwest. I learned much, enjoyed different foods, cultural ways and developed newly formed friendships that have come to be of much value over the years.

What puzzles me is the California comments. Not sure what generated those comments? Oh well, it is said we create our own reality from what we perceive of others and expect from others which is usually based on our personal beliefs. To some degree I suppose this preceding theory holds some validity. Finally it clearly seems, to reduce somebody to an oversimplified category or rather to categorize individuals or groups of people according to an oversimplified standardized image or idea based on a certain geographical region is merely stereotyping at best.

Manhattan is ridiculously easy to get around in. The street numbers get higher as you go south to north and the avenue numbers get higher as you go east to west. Buses and subways take you anywhere you need to go. It's also the most walkable city, everybody walks all the time.
Like DC. Letter streets east to west; numbered streets north to south. Even numbers (IIRC) north and east side of streets. Avenues are diagonal; ya just gotta learn those. Really only need to know 4 of 'em; Mass Ave, Wisconsin Ave, Georgia Ave., and Connecticut Ave. Need to know where Dupont Circle is, and Rock Creek parkway, Reservoir Rd, East-West H'way, Western Ave, a couple others. I lived in Silver Spring, off Colesville Rd. Used to deliver office supplies, and my turf was basically DC west of GA Ave, Arlington, Montgomery county out to National Geographic out in Gaithersburg, with the occasional run out to Dulles. Super-easy to get around once you learned the system.

Houston's pretty easy, too.

I don't know why Ohio is called part of the midwest. I think of it as the East. Midwest is Kansas and Missouri. I don't think of W. Virginia as part of the South, either. I tend to think of that region as Appalachia. WV, TN, & KY.
