As a foreigner you tend to notice certain things that don't make sense...

I kinda like it when something happens and some real British quirks like "must buy bread and milk" show up, there's a small Waitrose nearby and when I walked madam earlier on, there were countless people shopping like WWIII would break out tomorrow. Their bread is going to be stale...

Another good one is supermarkets and Xmas, I mean the shops are closed for ONE BLOODY DAY, ONE and they all shop like they would be closed for a month. The season of gluttony is upon us...

AAAARRRRRGGGGHHHHH!!!!! Agreed 100%!!! Must not rant! Must not rant!

Caller ID is one of the best conveniences of the last century.  I don't answer the phone just because it rings.  Instead, it's because I actually want to talk to the person on the other end.

I was just talking to a friend the other day about this very thing.  How much we love the caller ID.  I guess the hide button is like a perpetual caller ID that automatically takes them to nowhere land.  I have had people on "no ring" status on my phone before... so when they called, my phone didn't ring.  There was zero I wanted to hear from them, and so I had no need to pick up the phone or even interrupt my life at all in order to look at the phone.

My friend told me the other day that she often looks at the phone and happily pushes the "ignore" button.  (I imagine there is a certain psychological satisfaction there!  As long as you don't "ignore" me! I told her.

Best,
sunshine

That's one of the great things that cellular technology has done for mankind: when we all only had land lines, the telephone held this weird sway over us - when it rang, we would rush to answer it. Regardless of who was on the other end.

Now, the phone ringer is more of an "invitation to treat"; we have a look, think "nah, don't think I want to talk to you" and cheerfully ignore it

In an odd way I find it charming...

Some other traits like "not getting involved" I find less charming. I recall buying a few things in Oxfam, a young woman working there was obviously recovering from what could have been a car crash but if you looked closer, you could see that she must have been a self-harmer. Some old bint with a bug up her behind was giving her a hard time how ugly it is, she shouldn't have to see it, can't she stay in the back of the shop, really laying into the girl - and that in a job that mainly uses people with disabilities to re-socialize them and help them get their feet on the ground. I couldn't believe that everybody just looked away and pretended not to notice.

Let's say I haven't learned to be properly British in that respect and felt the need to tell her what I don't want to witness in a charity shop...

I hate the phone. I would rather deal with a parrot gone wild. But the folks I want to ignore are not likely to have my phone number. I prefer the tv remote analogy--when the commercial that annoys you comes on, hit mute or change the channel.

I don't see that as a British trait I must say.

It sure as shit isn't a London one - around here you're doing well if you can keep others out of a good row, rather than trying to persuade them to jump in in the first place

Yeah, and it's not like you can make much with just milk and bread either

Does anybody know where the milk and bread thing come from?

I could understand it if it was comfort food, but they aren't buying cookies...

Speaking as someone who lived in Colorado Springs, CO for a number of years, I can tell you why I do it.  We've been through two blizzards where the conditions were so extreme that we were unable to get anywhere for days.  The milk is just due to the fact that so many things are made with milk if you have just what is in your house or you have young children.  The bread is for those cases of losing power until everyone can have the juice turned back on.  If nothing else, most folks have peanut butter, jelly, or jam in the house.

Thanks, but you know the UK doesn't tend to get blizzards, the snow is a few inches if that much.

It's sort of comical, you see a snow flake and then people rush to the stores, in 99% of all cases the snow won't stick to the ground for longer than a few minutes. It's the panic buying when there is no reason that I find a bit strange.

Trust Me.  I know what you're saying.  After Colorado, we moved to Georgia, where it snows rarely, if at all.  Two inches and those folks lose their minds.  (Sorry to those in Georgia, but it's true.)  They aren't equipped to handle any kind of snowfall and most don't know how to drive in it.

I saw a news clip a while back on YouTube that showed it snowing in somewhere warm in the US (Florida?), and of course most of the locals were unused to driving in snow, so it was mayhem

Well obviously that place wasn't warm at the time, as it was snowing. But somewhere more used to sub-tropical conditions.

I'm almost certain it was Florida but has it ever snowed there?
