Oh gesh.. get a room you two.

It started gently snowing, I mean very gently, and all of a sudden all the cars are all driving at a speed your average turtle could keep up with.

I shall overtake them on my way to the supermarket where I shall buy milk and bread

I just hate when those sorts of people move to Iowa..........especially Iowa City.

LaT, keep very much in mind that, for the last twenty years, every place that I've lived has been a military town on one level or another.  That means there are always people in that location who can't drive in the snow.  I tend to be more sympathetic to their plight up until that point that I'm sharing the same snow covered road with them.

Oh hell yeah. Drives me up the wall. Although I do like fucking with their heads from time to time ... if I get someone clueless tailgating me I use the handbrake to set the rear of my car swinging around, which makes it look like I'm going to crash. I wait for them to hit their brakes, then I straighten my car out and accelerate a bit, just as they skid, scaring themselves silly and causing them to back the fuck off. Never fails

I grew up driving in a lot of snow, so I find it fun to drive in, rather than a pain.

Let me put it this way, I am preparing one of the guest rooms as I think 1st floor will be fine, don't want to risk him taking more stairs than absolutely needed, do not want to sleep anywhere near drunken snores and fumes, don't want to be woken up by announcements that he's dying and needs a bucket (bucket in guest room and toilet right next to guest room - great arrangement), oh and I will slip dog and cat treats under the pillow and maybe my speakers in the office will point at the wall to the guest room and listen to a bit of punk rock tomorrow morning... If that doesn't help, the cats and dog might slip into the room and they have such sensitive noses for treats. In case I feel exceptionally cruel, I might even whisper in Kia's ear "Where's daddy? Walkies?"
But I'm not completely cruel, I might stock up on aspirin

And don't forget the offer of scrambled eggs and bacon for breakfast!  That's always great for a hangover!!!!!  NOT!!!!!

Whenever I have a hangover* I always have a full cooked brekkie - fried eggs, fried bacon, sausages, black pudding, hash browns, mushrooms ... seems to work a treat.

*which is almost never, as I a) have a staggering capacity for booze and b) have learned my lessons, so tend to quit while I'm ahead on those rare occasions things do get "out of hand"

I know, it's quite odd he usually then calls for a full English, the smell alone makes me sick and the whole grease, ewww Claims it makes him better, and I can hear my arteries clogging up from just looking at the stuff.

I don't have a big capacity for booze at all, it's meant to be enjoyed and getting drunk is the unpleasant side effect, binge drinking is another British phenomena I can't quite comprehend. Why are people setting out to be deliberately drunk?

But you know what's going to happen, a few snow flakes and the UK comes to a stand still... Have you bought milk and bread? That always amuses me, a bit of snow and everybody buys milk and bread...

LadyC, that happens everywhere......and I think it's so funny to watch!!!!!  You can always tell the natives of an area to those who are new.....the natives just forge on ahead, and the newbies are running around like Armegeddon is headed this way.  I was in Tulsa, OK when they got 14 inches of snow overnight.....shut down 5 counties!  People were out of their minds trying to get to the store to get "essentials"....I think it stayed on the ground for about 48 hours.  I didn't even blink, just put the truck in gear, and off I went.  I spent almost 35 hours at work because people said they couldn't get out of their driveways to get to work....puh-leeze!

I guess hurricane season is the biggy here....there's a run on bottled water at the start of it.....empty shelves everywhere!  Ya gotta love it!

LOL, well it sounds a bit like the UK just nobody could call it "somewhere warm"

Well obviously that place wasn't warm at the time, as it was snowing. But somewhere more used to sub-tropical conditions.
I'm almost certain it was Florida but has it ever snowed there?

Yes, actually, it does.  Last winter in January, Ocala, FL got dusted, as did Daytona Beach.  Granted, the term "dusted" is the appropriate description, but I'm sure the folks were going nutso!  Both of those cities listed are in central Florida, normally a temperate winter area of the state.

Update...

He rang that he's on his way home but it might take a while because he got into the wrong train first and is heading direction London.... Wants to know what we have in the house that is drinkable as he got a guy from his department with him and they plan to play guitar (shall I do the rounds and apologize to the whole street in advance?) and they'll pick up Chinese on the way to the house...

So I guess I better get another guest room ready (somehow I doubt that they want to share a bed - it would surprise me greatly) make sure all the good wine and whisky is out of reach, I might just run to the corner shop and get a bottle of vodka and some cheap plonk, because they seem to be past the state where they notice or care...

Well, c'mon, it is the time of year for wishes to be granted!  And yeah, early apologies might work in your favor!  Get some sympathy vibes working!

I am too nosey to hide anyone.  The day something I read from a stranger on the internet causes me any emotion that isn't one I enjoy, I will unplug the computer.  It's all entertainment to me, one way or tuther

I make a point of never hiding anyone, either. The word "idiot" has a very fluid definition in everyday use, and probably most of us would qualify in someone's judgment at one time or another.

@JAS - On occasion I'll unhide one of my 2 longtimers hoping they've mellowed or something.  Nope.  Never.  I do occasionally read when I recognize I'm being stalked by one of them.  Even then, when they address me, meh it's still the same "I know everything and you all are so beneath me" self-righteous nonsense that I have no need to respond.  Why would I?  Clearly the long timer knows more about me than I do?  *laughing*

@Kirata -
Yep... I often tell people - we're all assholes... It just happens to be your/my turn!  I'm cool with that.  We all have to have a bad day or a blind spot.

best,
sunshine

Being a rather anhedonic race to begin with, booze is one of the few pleasures the Brits know how to indulge in on these miserable, freezing islands. But don't knock our breakfasts; as an occasional treat, they beat slices of cheese+ham any day. I just had one this very morning, sets me up a treat.

A better question should be, "Why aren't the Brits as friendly as the Americans?" Well, people in East Anglia are something of an exception but they have their own unique set of...inherent difficulties, shall we say, to deal with.

We are pretty friendly on the whole - easily as friendly as the Americans. But we have a lot of very loud ass-holes amongst us (as this site is testament to), and they tend to drag the average down. I think it's to do with the class system.

I have never found the ratio of friendly Brits vs. friendly Americans to hve any kind of huge gap.  People  ARE people.

Why the class system? Personally I get along better with blue-bloods and white-collar, but I've chatted briefly with council workers and the like, and the old line from "Desiderata" is quite true, they too have their own story, and occasionally quite intriguing ones, too..

About a year and half some young lad and I were chatting in a pub smack in the middle of a forest, he was a pipe fitter or whatnot, and remarked "You know mate you're alright for a posh bloke"....like I go around enunciating like Prince fucking Phillip!!
