He grabs headlines off the internet and posts them here, usually without any accompanying statement, except to respond about conspiracies by the banking/investment industry.  It's a fetish item.

Ok- let me re-phrase the argument.

Was it really necessary for the airport to turn off the lights and the heat- in light of the circumstances?

It snows- I get that.  Things get shut down- perfectly understandable.

But it was an error on the management to shut off the heat and the lights.   On that- they deserve any blame that they get.  The act is cruel.

They wanted to invoke the blitz spirit.

Some airports get cots out for the stranded passengers.

Got a citation for that happening recently?

I don't think I'd fit in a cot, would give me terrible back problems.

It wouldn't be very comfortable when it's five below and they've turned off the heating as well.

On the positive side; it's not every day you get to play a game of 'Murder in the dark' at an airport.

Is anyone here agreeing that the airport should have shut off the heat?

It is not a "dismal failure".  You used similar words about the Metrodome tears, after it had snowed 17 inches.  Is there no place in your world for things to not work perfectly??

Heart valves and nuclear reactor parts?

;-0~

I can't address nuke reactor parts much (although I bet they go through a screening program you could not believe), but there was a south Denver company that made pacemakers (http://www.highbeam.com/doc/1G1-16783310.html).  The morons who made them tested them for a million cycles, not realizing that that many cycles, while required by regulations, was nowhere near adequate to simulate life in the human heart.  I attended a technical meeting in which they gave their methodology and the room went nuts when they disclosed that little fact.

I agree that the Metrodome was bad engineering, but Heathrow does not ever see this kind of snow.  It'd be like demanding a flood response plan for the Las Vegas airport.

prisonplanet states that that happened, but CNN doesn't.  It just sounds too weird for me to accept, and I don't buy prisonplanet stories unless corroborated.

Yes we are all in agreement, turning off the heating was a positive step.

(if that actually occurred)

If it encourages people to fuck off home instead of loitering around waiting for a plane that isn't going anywhere when they're trying to close down the airport, yes.

Would you feel the same way if you were stranded there?

Per the prisonplanet article, the passengers could not secure transportation and had no way to leave.  Basically, the airport just became a big hotel.

If so, it makes no sense that the airport would shut off heating.  Among other things, the personnel should be working the place 24/7 and need the heat.  I suspect that the heating system broke under the heavy use and prisonplanet drew their own conclusions.

I've not read anything elsewhere about the heating. My experience is that large archaic buildings don't tend to keep heat in them well, the boiler could be on full blast and they may still feel cold. It isn't the most up to date facility, blame BAA yesterday for today.

They didn't fix the airport roof when it was sunny, as they say.

A lot more likely, when you consider medication boy's source, yes.

I was trying to find anything else, nothing at all... You would think the papers would have reported about it...

It snows every year.

No it doesn't, idiot. Wrong yet again.

They should be prepared for it.

People think Britain is a cold place, but it's actually rare to get sustained snow here, other than in the north/Scotland, and sometimes parts of wales. So the huge money we'd have to invest in infrastructure to cope would almost certainly be wasted.

There is, however, an initiative underway to get the government's chief scientific advisor to draw up an opinion on whether or not colder winters will be more frequent in coming years. So expect to see us invest in snowploughs just in time for Caribbean weather to become the norm.

But that notwithstanding, it's just your usual uninformed claptrap.

Interesting though that in the "comments" section there's a bloke posting who seems almost as radio rentals as you - maybe it's worth contacting him so you two can either double date, or one of you can watch the door while the other uses the toilet?

You'll have to point out the part in that report or perhaps the below comments where it states the airport heating was turned off.

I know your are eager to scuttle away from your earlier comments, sourced from Prison Planet (only a handful of astronauts have ever escaped) but that is no way to hold a conversation.
