I wonder how many went out- even after being told that it should be essential travel only?   Then got caught in the mess and now sour grapes.

The detail of lack of heat - very well could just be how wide open public spaces are- they are drafty.

The point that this area is mild is noted- as that Germany also has problems.

it does sounds like a lack of communication- the airlines- not knowing if a flight is canceled or not-  and some would be prompted to take a chance rather then lose the cost of the airfare which often is non-refundable. .. which brings us back to sour grapes.

If the airline cancels the flight, it is refundable, nobody loses anything. Last summer I had to go to SF, there was a problem with overbooking, they offered anybody who would be willing to wait a day with hotel paid an additional return flight to a location of their choice.

Since the weather is unpredictable it can be a problem, but I would think that security is much more important that not being able to fly, would you rather crash or have a delay?

The comments I read- indicated that the website - were that the flights were still scheduled- and only after they showed up- did they learn otherwise.

So- the idea that one could lose their money had to have some motivation-

The flights might have been scheduled but then due to weather reports flight security might decide that it would be a security risk.

In case flights are canceled the airline loses money. In case I book a flight and pay for it and they cancel, I still have a valid transport contract with them, and trust me, in most cases they rather pay you your money back than having a line of people waiting for available flights, being booked into hotels the airline pays for, etc. Airlines are interested in flights not getting canceled but the authorities are responsible for security.

Flights are canceled -- fairly easy in the US now.
There is a fine for sitting on the tarmac too long.  Does UK have that same rule?

I don't know what you mean with the fine of sitting on the tarmac?

If a plane sits on the tarmac longer then 4 hours- they are fined in the US.  It is a recent law.

I don't know, but most airlines are not interested in having their planes on the tarmac, doesn't earn them money.

My answer to te media reported, (enhanced ?) havoc around the country is, we are not geared up for it, so if there is a real possibility of death, injury or unforseen expenses, stay at home and wait till the stuff melts.

But for those we see bleating on the tv, stuck at airports with planes not flying, well there is a good reason for the planes not flying, that basically is the luck of the draw about travelling in winter, but when people travel in winter they should be prepared for the shit happens scenario. By car, carry warm clothing, coat, shovel food etc, so why do we hink it is not necessary to be prepared when we travel by any other transport. Oh, I get it many think we should be wrapped in cotton wool, our motherly government should be looking after us.

But to be fair, snow was forecast, people took a chance and came unstuck, perhaps letting us all now despite what we think about how powerful we, humans are on this planet, we certainly do not control it, it could with ease wipe us out in a heartbeat.

A mate of mine is currently "trapped" in Ney York, unable to get back, not due to problems in NYC, but due to problems in terms of the backlog that's built up here ... he's currently scheduled to be back late this week, possibly as late as Christmas Eve.

He doesn't seem that fussed, as he's being put up in a very nice hotel in NYC. At least he wasn't that fussed until I pointed out that he was emailing me while his wife was a) out of the hotel, b) in NYC and c) in possession of a credit card :)

Last I heard? "OH CHRIST JESUS FUCK NO! I NEVER THOUGHT OF THAT! Gotta go man!" :)

Any travel during the winter-  could be bogged down by snow.  So your point is taken.

In the past, perhaps ancient past, people only went out if they really had to, as winter is a killer, so perhaps us now should do that, who knows forced winter's rest might leave people a little less stressed. Rest in the winter and work in the summer.

Oh, but I get it, people of the past existed for themselves, what they did was for them, now we are all slaves to the corporation, we must work all the time.

If you seriously think people in times long past had easier lives then I'm afraid you're mistaken.

It's a lot cheaper than what she'd be spending in London, she can spend so much more in NYC, though after Xmas and in the sales she'd get so much more. Maybe he should count his blessings that she's not shopping in London?

From what he was saying the "temptations" were substantially greater there than here.

More shops and the Americans know how to sell, but the thing is that you spend more time looking around because there are so many temptations and as a woman you are always looking for the perfect item (perfect pair of heels, business suit, LBD, etc.) so with so many shops you have to check them all out to make sure you are not buying the wrong one, then you go back and buy the best of the lot...

In case he really want her to get a lot and spend less, he should send her to the designer retail area in NJ, just over the bridge, as far as I remember 1/3rd of the prices and no sales tax. Bought a marvelous DK cashmere wardrobe there for the price of what one piece would have cost me at Harvey Nicks, only downfall was that I developed a severe allergy towards all things wool within a short time of the purchase. Should have gone for the linen/silk stuff.

I know a lot of Americans who put a lot of value on what quality they get, call me cheap, but if I get great style and quality in an outlet for less the price I pay in a fancy shop, I can do without all the bells and whistles and the fancy packaging.
