I lived in Glastonbury once. I hated it. It's full of hippies, and the shops only sell quartz crystals and various takes on ornamental Arthurian swords (Arthur and his harlot spouse are apparently buried in the Abbey).

Plus, it's on a Ley-line, and the energies gave me a permanent head ache.

Don't ever think about going to Tintagel if you don't like hippies, crystals, dream catchers, plastic swords and plastic Merlins.... They even have a Camelot hotel, apparently newly renovated it's been 2 or 3 years since I was there and my hope is that the renovations made it slightly less kitsch but I doubt it...

When I lived 230 miles away from Tintagel, I used to go there a few times a year, but now I live about forty miles away from the place, I have not been there for about five years. Although Tintagel was not really the interest for going there, as I agree, it is kitsch aand one just has to draw amusement from that arthurian society they have there in that big hall thing. But the interest in Tintagel was Rocky Valley and St Nectan's Glen. They used to have a load of fab cats up at St Nectan's Glen.

He was actually making fun of the people who claim he's Kenyan by being deliberately over the top...

I usually spend a week in September surfing in Cornwall and since I'm a big fan of the whole Merlin/Pendragon myth, I decided to spend an afternoon there visiting Tintagel (rainy day and the tide was a bit inconvenient, thought it was better to explore than to sit in a pub), I quite like the charming and quaint Cornish villages but I wasn't prepared for the onlslaught of pure bad taste taken so far OTT that in an absurd way it was funny...

You dont get British sarcasm do you Rich. Moonie is having an extended laugh at the birthers expense.

He mounted that butterfly over a year ago, and shows no inclination to let it go just yet.
It's a bit worrying that members of the nation that produced Bierce (easily the most sarcastic writer who has ever been published) can be so literal minded...

Tintagel's only one of the suggested sites, I think. (For the castle Uther Pendragon sneaked into disguised as Gorlois in order to play hide the sausage with Ygraine) Isn't that one largely down to Geoffrey Of Monmouth? I know that it's also been connected with King Mark of Cornwall, which sounds a bit more likely, given the whole Saxon vs Romanicised Angles thing that most think is the only place Arthur might be fitted into British history.

There are quite a few of them (sites) dotted around Britain and historians actually think there were several Arthurs about, a bit like Atillas but given the fact that there wasn't much documentation (most people couldn't even write their own names) and times were turbulent, they all sort of merged into one and given the fact that the bards added and left out stuff to make up their own versions, it's not a very exact science.

Very true. I always loved that line of Alan Moore's about the reason bards were seen as magicians in so much mythology: in a preliterate society, the people who told the stories and/or wrote the poems were the people who defined reality.

When have I ever claimed he's from Kenya? You seem to have me confused with a few of the idiots on here who take that birther crap seriously.
(I'll give you a clue: they're all Americans.)

Here ya go... http://www.collarchat.com/searchpro.asp?phrase=kenyan&author=moonhead&forumid=ALL&topicreply=both&message=body&timeframe=%3E&timefilter=0&language=single&top=300&criteria=AND&minRank=0&sortMethod=d&submitbutton=+OK+

Now if you don't think he is from Kenya, why do you constantly refer to him as the "kenyan"

And before you claim it's because everyone else does it, you might want to find some examples of other people calling him that, because you are the only one I can think of who does.

And Heritic, you are correct. If it had been an attack against pagans, I doubt the posters on this board would have found it so amusing.

He may be trying to make the birthers look bad, but all he is doing in my opinion is making himself look like an idiot. It would be the same thing if I started running around calling every black I met a N&^*(^( and then tried to claim I was making fun of racists. Personally, I try to copy the actions of the people I look up to and respect. Why would I try to act like someone I think is an asshole?

You know, I'm not a native speaker but I've been in Britain long enough to realize that he was using sarcasm, apparently something gets lost in the translation if there is a lot of water in between...

I never doubted that he was sarcastic, either, and I am, too, not a native speaker.

And given that there are still people around who defend, or even believe in, this whole birther crap, I found his use of Kenyan funny.
He used a linguistic instrument that is not uncommon, and would have been recognized by most people in central Europe.

Might be another case of that pesky confirmation bias. Or, most likely, simply once more cultural differences.

Nicely stated, Boi. And once you've established what an asshole someone must be to find that sort of ignorant attempt at humor funny, it does tend to reflect on anything else they say, on any subject.
