I never doubted that he was sarcastic, either, and I am, too, not a native speaker.

And given that there are still people around who defend, or even believe in, this whole birther crap, I found his use of Kenyan funny.
He used a linguistic instrument that is not uncommon, and would have been recognized by most people in central Europe.

Might be another case of that pesky confirmation bias. Or, most likely, simply once more cultural differences.

There are no cultural differences regarding this.

I think most everyone understood, with the exception of a few people, that he has been using the term to take shots at the birthers.

It does sound like there very well might be a cultural divide. Maybe not when it comes to understanding, but where it pertains to appreciating, and chuckling over, this brand of humor.
I am at least willing to consider it so, instead of concluding that everybody who does not get it is an asshole.

Maybe you should get yourself cut: it sounds like your foreskin is strangling your brain, sometimes.

What do they call that? When the prepuce has to be removed because it's not growing to match the rest of the schlong and starts to squeeze the glans?

Tor is an alternate spelling of Thor

Letter looks suspiciously like the globe and cross sovereign symbol

I think the character you want here is thorn:

The one you're describing sounds like eth:

K.

Kirata, punctilliously so, however; since nearly all of the written norse mythology extant is Icelandic, they commonly used eth instead of thorn...
(which is by far more d) in fact you can sometimes see the thorn with a cross on the upper vertical time to time depending on when it was written, as a sort of go between morphing.

Thats why ther is Torvaldsland (Thors woodland)  and Dorchester (I suspect) as well as Torshavn.

Because it has been spelled as:
Thor (thorn)or
Dor  (eth)or
Tor   ???

in translations.

The danelaw in England wasn't danish exclusively, it was sort of a word used for all scandinavians much like socialist, commie, nation destroying pukes is used for democrats here in the US.

Frankly, however; I have no idea how a Kenyan might sound it out, and am certainly clueless about how an alien Klegg would pronounce it.

And Heritic, you are correct. If it had been an attack against pagans, I doubt the posters on this board would have found it so amusing.

Actually, I think I'd have treated the subject with the same level of gravity.   I visit Glastonbury frequently; I've never been able to walk down its high street without laughing at some new species of supposedly 'pagan' nuttiness.

Oh don't get me started on that. The Astaru bullshit's even dafter than the Wiccan business that only exists because Gardner thought that the Golden Dawn was a bit too male for his taste. Anybody who thinks it actually is an ancient tradition rather than something somebody invented from scratch in the thirties probably isn't playing with a full deck. And as for that "Burning Times" drivel...

He may be trying to make the birthers look bad, but all he is doing in my opinion is making himself look like an idiot. It would be the same thing if I started running around calling every black I met a N&^*(^( and then tried to claim I was making fun of racists. Personally, I try to copy the actions of the people I look up to and respect. Why would I try to act like someone I think is an asshole?

Nicely stated, Boi. And once you've established what an asshole someone must be to find that sort of ignorant attempt at humor funny, it does tend to reflect on anything else they say, on any subject.

More whine for you both ? It was sarcasm not humour, you need to learn the difference.

There you have it, rule. We are understanding but unappreciative. Thank goodness we have central Europeans to tell us of our various capacities or lack thereof. (I was going to present that we actually appreciate humor (and even humour) wherever it is from, but people probably would have thought I was just being facetious. Whatever that word means.).

In any event, my own preparations for going to Europe include German lessons, but I realize that I'm likely to have a stop at Heathrow so I'm conscientiously brushing up on British also.

Really, RML? 'Cuz it sure seems like the term gets thrown into anything where he wants to slander conservatives in general, or any criticism of President Obama's policies and practices.

There was a time when I might have thought you were capable of seeing such a distinction, but I'm past such misunderestimations.

While it's vaguely amusing to see you show off your knowledge of penises, Moon, we've done this before, and my opinion of your posts has not changed. I'm sure it would show up in the search results I posted earlier.

You are free to refer to my President as you see fit, with whatever nastiness flows from your head. In turn, I am free to listen, and determine if anything that comes off your keys should ever be given any credibility. You've made your choices, and I've made mine.

Own your fucking speech though, and spare us the bullshit.

It's a shame about the tree. I hope it grows again. It was sacred to some, and harmless to the rest.

Richie, Richie, Richie!

I sure wouldn't want you to misunderestimate me.

Have we been attending the Bush/Palin School of New Word Creation?

You have two problems going against you.

First, you really don't catch on to things very quickly.  I've tried to help you in the past but one can only do so much.

The second is your stunning victim mentality, and frankly I'm a little tired of all the pissing and moaning about petty issues.

It's called sarcasm, RML. Were you aware of the discussion, or just hoping you could jump on a bandwagon, and not get slapped as hard?

Merry Christmas. Don't drink too much when you are alone.

Oh FFS!
I was trying to give somebody the benefit of doubt.

And yes, there are differences where it comes to the appreciation of different forms of humor. I sure as hell do not appreciate all brands of US American humor, but I do not automatically conclude that this makes those who do into Assholes.

If anyone still wants to talk about the thorn tree . . . .

I stayed at my friend's place in Glastonbury last night and asked him about the incident.  It seems that Glastonbury really does have its ongoing fueds between pagans and Christians.  It's quite a peculiar place in that regard.  Naturally, many people think that this was an attack by pagans.  Whatever, I must say, I'm no longer seeing quite so much fun in the whole incident.  The tree has a hell of a lot of history and legend behind it.  The good news is that these trees are apparently very resilient and even if it doesn't grow back from its original trunk, a tree can be regrown from a cutting.

But the attack may have had nothing directly to do with pagan/Christian infighting.  The land on which the damaged tree stands is owned by Edward James, who was arrested earlier this month in connection with the collapse of Crown Currency Exchange.  A lot of creditors have lost money as a result of the collapse.
