truckinslave -> Islam and illogic (12/27/2010 11:10:43 AM)

I have long and often puzzled over the (non)workings of the Islamic (terrorist)mind, concluding basically that there is no possibility that I or anyone in the West has or can divine a clue as to their future actions.

Seriously, anyone with a smattering of knowledge of modern military weaponry cannot take seriously the idea that AQ wants to drop American civilian aircraft. Destroy the US economy?  Drive past a couple oil refineries, and a couple airports. Picture a few dozen men, some stingers, some rocket launchers, maybe a couple mortars.

Given even meager resources, only a fool could fail to smuggle the weapons into the country...

The problem of the illogic of the Islamic mind has not gone completely unnoticed by others. http://www.worldaffairsjournal.org/new/blogs/muravchik/Epistemology_to_the_Muslim_World
is an editorial on the topic.

The Mossad tried to blow up the Mexican legislature??? Sure, dude.

Hey, thats called propaganda.  Remember the WMD?  Remember Reagans Star Wars?  Remember the fiscally conservative republicans?

Plenty of people believe that horseshit and act on it.  same same.

It is no more puzzling than any other faith based behavior.

The problem with the Muslims is that they are over a billion people, and not encouraged to read the Quran and question it,  and understand it.  They simply buy the slop that they are given by the imam or in the madrassas.

From the article: "It is often said in Western discourse these days that the Muslim world needs to experience an analog to the age of enlightenment. But the real need is for something that happened in Christendom one hundred years earlier, namely an age of reason. There may never come a Muslim Voltaire with his ferocious assault on religion; and I am not sure that I would wish it upon Islam. But the Muslim world desperately needs its Descartes."

I disagree about them needing enlightenment. The amazing thing is that the Ottoman Empire represented the zenith of civilization while Spain was forcibly converting Jews during the Inquisition.  Since then, European and US civilization has steadily progressed while the Islamic civilization has retreated if anything.  It's not like they haven't had their age of enlightenment - they have forgotten it.

That's debatable.
I'd have a lot more sympathy for this argument that the Ottoman empire was the last repository for the dregs of the Roman Empire if the fuckers hadn't first destroyed the eastern Empire and burned the library at Alexandria.

Americans talking about enlightenment... [;)]

truckinslave -> RE: Islam and illogic (12/27/2010 2:09:55 PM)

No. This was belief.

truckinslave -> RE: Islam and illogic (12/27/2010 2:12:08 PM)

Well, I suppose that explains it if you understand, as I do, that seething hatred of Jews is a cornerstone of Islam.

truckinslave -> RE: Islam and illogic (12/27/2010 2:13:22 PM)

DS, Islam has never strayed far from the violence and jihad of its founder.

CerVeza -> RE: Islam and illogic (12/27/2010 2:14:07 PM)

ugggh so many silly leftists...

Remember the WMD? Sure do and they were real. Saddam used them on the Kurds. Every bit of good intelligence we had said they had them. For some reason he didn't use them.

Remember Reagans Star Wars? Yup sure do. That forced the Soviets to spend themselves into oblivion to keep up and that led to the end of the soviet union and the berlin wall falling. You know, freedom for those behind the iron curtain. WE WON; the leftists had that one wrong too.

Remember the fiscally conservative republicans? Yes, the tea party. Notice how much the american public loved leftists during the last election? Or did you miss that story? And now the new republicans are on notice. If they screw up, we'll get rid of THEM too.

No. This was belief.

And there are those who believe the enumerations I wrote.

And wherein lies a difference, or a distinction? Their urban myth and old wives tales, different setup than ours, but essentially....

Airborne!

"Different setup than ours"

Yes. Ours is not based on seething hatred of others.

Charles6682 -> RE: Islam and illogic (12/27/2010 2:30:22 PM)

Islam is English actually mean's Peace and submission to God.Let's not group every single Muslim into the same group. There are plenty of Moderate Muslims who are for Peace and Love.Is there a violent extreme group of Muslims?Sure there is.There is also far right Christians who are sick and dangerous too.You know, the ones who go around to Abortion clinics and murder people.Remember Timmy McVeigh? There are religious extremists in every faith.Remember the witch trials? The list can go on and on.How about for the many people of faith who do wonderful things for their local comuunity? The ones who help people without asking a thing un return? The ones who go to 3rd countries and help the poor.Thats where the focus should be.Not playing modern day witchhunts about who might be guilty.

hertz -> RE: Islam and illogic (12/27/2010 2:37:37 PM)

To get back to the OP...

What puzzles me is why the bright minds of the US seem to be utterly unable to comprehend that their efforts to manipulate the nations of the world to the advantage of the US, either by show of force or by economic means, is inevitably going to lead to some sort of kick-back. I mean, how dumb can the various US administrations be?

Truth is, we're all lead by morons. Some of us even vote for the stupid bastards. But it's much easier to see the stupidity of others from the safety of one's own 'culture' than it is to identify the stupidity on one's own doorstep.

For what it's worth, yes I agree, those who crusade against the US under the flag of Islam do not have a particularly attractive alternative to offer us. But I can't say I find the US cultural product especially appealing. God only knows how it might appear to those whose only experience of it is to be exploited for someone else's gain. And the high technology US brand of terrorism sucks just as much as a nail bomb hidden in a pair of shoes. I completely get why some people might think that the only way to fight the US fire of fundamentalism is with another equally bright, but opposing, fire.

Of course it is.

Only now we hate Muslims instead of Commies because the Commies supply us with cheap labor and goods and buy our debt.

When that runs out of steam ten or so years from now we'll find someone new to hate.

And I'm sure you'll be leading the charge.

Do not try to turn this thread into another of your anti-American screeds.
