Heh ... can we do "fave single sentence lines" then? One of my faves is Kenneth Williams (of Carry On fame), to Dame Judith Evans (an old school actress of imposing character):

"I think any criticism of your deportment is tantamount to impertinence" ... you have to say it out loud to really get the best of it :)

And I’ve found him saying it ... the English language is so wonderful sometimes:

Also, see the original of “The Importance Of Being Earnest” ... it’s the film that utterly gobsmacked a young Stephen Fry, and I can well see why; Wilde at his absolute best ...

I do not think the Brits are necessarily anymore or less law abiding than we here in the US are, what I do see is a definite lack of the US "frontier mentality".  The Brits never had a "wild west", well at least not as recent as ours was, this I think could be the explanation for the large disparity in the thoughts on firearms.

You've never been to Ireland, I take it?

A place once described by someone as "an nation of people so keen to fight that they'll fight each other, even brothers and friends, if no other, more enticing, target presents itself".

I believe you.

Frontier mentality doesn't work well in a crowded city.

Do people in the US still have a frontier mentality or can they pop down to Wal-Mart for supplies these days?

History is just that. You live in the times around you not the past. I don't want to kill the Romantic notion but I'd call the edge of our galaxy a frontier, not any place on earth. Earth places stopped being such when Google started publishing pictures of them from space or at high altitude.

Actually I think as soon as I could read an Atlas I knew there was no frontiers left.

An alternative to the Royal Family?

How about not the Royal Family? I.e. nothing. Pension all the spongers off, then flog off or make public properties their homes, which we built and paid for. That'd work for me.

Republics seem to work ok for the US and Australia ... why can’t we have one?

Deal, providing you also get rid of all the grace and favour homes for Politicians and and Union leaders. As well as making them pay back anything they made through being in office.....Illegal expenses, book royalties, second homes ect. I am sure you would get back more than enough to cover a measley £40 million. Hell, that wouldnt even pay the tuition fees for all those MPs kids. [;)]

Done! You're the practical man, I'm the dreamer, so I'll be President and press some flesh (and blackmail all the fuckers who won't play ball), and you shall be my Prime Minister, and dictate the commonsense that will lead a nation out of gloom, since you seem such a commonsensical chap.

Game on. Vote for "The Sensible Party".

Oh ... hang on ... Monty Python already did that one ... we need another name ...

Weren't there 3 different choices of rubbish? One bad choice eliminated and another bad one voted in, a moderately bad one got sort of lost along the way...

You can explore the night sky to your heart's content.

Not if you are the victim of light pollution however, sometimes when I go on holiday I look up and think 'fuck, where did all those stars come from.' Being in the city is a bit like having that ozone shield like in Highlander II. Signs and topics of the times, the ozone.

I didn't mean to imply that British tourists are any better. Christ Jesus no. I just find the fact that so many American tourists are exactly as per stereotype highly amusing. You actually couldn't get any closer sometimes if you set out to replicate the concept.

Too damned right.  On Charing Cross Road, many years ago, I passed a huge man - sunglasses, Hawaiian T shirt, long shorts, festooned with cameras and other gadgets I barely recognised - standing next to a tiny woman who I took to be his wife.

Both were poring over a map.  I heard the woman say, "Why don't we ask this gennelman, Hank?' and Hank reply, "OK, Miriam'.  So Hank says to me, "Sir, could you tell me how to get to Ley-Cester-Square?"

I mean, it was all so stereotypical that I actually looked around for hidden movie-cameras, with Candid Camera-style TV shows in mind.

Heh.  Though, they may have been putting it all on for effect.  Re that thought: on a visit to the USA, I might feel inclined to lay on the Britishness with a trowel.  After all, it's only fair that Americans get as much amusement from Brit tourists as American tourists have given us.

But that is the point, it is not either or, and it makes both sides appear as if all we have ever encountered are the terrible types of tourists not the ones that are educated, well travelled and appreciative of the cultures we are fortunate enough to see. I love England, my sister and family live there, I guess I must be missing these hideous American stumblebums you all cross paths with in your travels. Can't this bullshit stop?

PeonForHer -> RE: Are the British more law abiding than Americans? (1/5/2011 3:12:35 AM)

Aynne,

As I said later to pahunk, in response to his comment that the "people that travel like that - are not really representative of the population as a whole", "Of course they aren't - I'd take that for granted.  It's just fun when they are, that's all. "

That's really my position on it.  Some caricatures aren't done out of hatred, they're done out of fondness.  No Brit could have failed to warm to Hank and Miriam on Charing Cross Road, asking for directions to Lay-Cester Square.  (Especially if said Brit had been addressed as 'Sir' or 'Ma'am'.  These honorifics are rare here between strangers, unless we're talking of the Forces, the police, or shop assistants.  This couple was so endearing!)  I'll play up the British thing on this forum occasionally because I know it gives North Americans a chuckle.  In short, for me . . . it's really not a bad thing.  It doesn't worsen USA/UK relations, it helps cement them.

. . . IMO.  It's a delicate thing, this kind of humour, I'll admit.  Xenophobia can be, and has been, passed off as fond ribbing.  The moment one pushes it, along with the suggestion that the 'target' doesn't like it because she/he is lacking in a sense of humour, said variety of humour is no longer fit for purpose.  As with any kind of humour: you watch people's faces, they show they're not happy, you STFU.

Of course, one cute thing about the whole frontier mentality that gets missed in these discussions is the fact that a lot of the history of the west concerned attempts at gun control. Wyatt Earp was always taken with that idea, for a start...

Well I hope that Wyatt Earp is now duly recast as the liberal wetdrip pinko he really was, then.  Outrageous.
