If you're going to "sample" the UK press, try The Independent's web site. It's not perfect (they've been "green-a-lised" with a vengeance), but they do provide interesting articles that make one think about things, instead of trying to serve up "the truth" ready-made, as most other newspaper web sites do.

I don't agree with 75% of what they write, but I do enjoy not agreeing with them, if that makes any sense :)

As to “not as sensationalist”, well yes ... and no. The British press love a good murder, or a politician caught with his hands in either a till or a girl’s knickers, but the one thing that has changed (and you touched upon it) was the influence of The Dirty Digger (Murdoch). That man has to be the single greatest influence for evil currently at large in the world today.

And he’s an American ... although, to be fair, only coz it made financial sense to become one ;)

As my old man would say,
May he rest in peace....soon

Sadly, that won't bring an end to it - he's created a dynasty that he hopes will continue his "good work", and it's in their interests to make sure they do.

The best we can hope for is that they make war on each other.

You have a point, but they wont give a rats arse over a threat of war, they will only use that as an excuse to use young people or the poor an undereducated as cannon fodder.
I would much rather their genitalia turn square and fester at the corners, with ooodles of stinking mrsa pus.
bleedin corporations *mutter* mutter*

The one good thing about a corporate war (which is what I was referring to) is that they tend to have to take part, and win or lose, themselves.

We can but hope :)

The impression I get is that overall, the British tend to follow laws and assume others do as well.  We Americans are more prone to think of those that break the rules.

I don't think gun ownership - or even a State's recourse to physical force in general - plays more than a minor part in keeping a population under control, Steven.  A concoction of economic, social, cultural and political forces does the job far more effectively.

.

This essentially conveys the issue, which it be far beyond particular laws or adherence thereto to effect either way.

The "economic, social, cultural and political" environment as exists from one country to the next is what matters, all carping of "why does your country blah blah blah ?" aside.

Every country finds its own balance, as to their own particular history and experience.

To ask such a peculiar question is to display one's obliviousness to other cultures and other valid realities.

That said, his heir is a lot less interested in publishing than television, so there's talk about him dumping a lot of the papers (or even the whole of IPC that was) to shut up the monopolies commission when he starts buying up more telly stations over here.

Trouble is, the TV stations are as big a part of the brainwashing machine as the papers are :(

Much more so, imo, but I'd much rather see a freer press and Murdoch in charge of all the telly besides the Beeb than the current situation.

Sorry to be Mr Negative, but I don't think either prospect pleases, if you follow me.

Fair enough. At least we have one publicly subsidised television network which we don't really have to worry about any of that happening to over here, was my point. There's nothing like that in the print media, sadly.

I don't want to be Negative Nancy, but the BBC's being chipped away at, year upon year - the amount of original programming (rather than commissioned) is falling annually, and BBC news is dumbing down by the day (still better than almost everything else, but their web site drives me up the wall with its over-simplifications).

I can see a point in the not-too-distant future where it ceases to be truly "independent", although one could argue that point was reached some time ago.

There's a superb Stephen Fry podcast on the topic of BBC funding (well that's the topic of the piece, but as usual he casts his net very wide indeed, with electrifying results), part of a speech he gave on the subject. If you've got iTunes (signing up for an iTunes Store account is free, you don't have to buy anything) it's available, and I'd urge you to listen to it.

<googles>

Here's the transcript, although I urge you to listen to him reading it. I've found the link that'll hopefully take you to the iTunes store for download:

Thanks. I'll have a look at that.

Please do. It's Fry at his very best.
