It helps if you make an attempt to back up statements like that, instead of just repeating them like a retarded parrot, old boy.

Yes.  The Brits are compliance freaks.

Yeah, you're just a troll.

A loon of a troll, and an especially dumb one, but just a troll.

No-one could possibly be as ignorant and stupid as you are, even with years of training.

What the hell happened to my thread?  24 pages long, and I don't recognize any of the last pages!!!!  [sm=confused.gif]

I dont believe the brits are more law abiding, certainly not in my experiences, which altho go back 20 odd years in actual experience,  I have many many family and friends that keep me up to date on a wide variety of things.
The difference in the way crime is reported is vastly different, as is sentencing and actual prison /jail time done
plus it is vastly different in the court system.

I'd agree with you.

As a wider concept, I don't think anyone is "more law abiding", per se; people are no more intrinsically lawless when left to their own devices here than anywhere else.

It's the political, policing and legal system around them that determines most of it.

In what way? You think the UK reporting is less sensationalist? Or more so?

The US imprisons, the last time I looked, more of its own people than the UK does.
Although that may have changed of late, I don't know.

Moonhead -> RE: Are the British more law abiding than Americans? (1/7/2011 3:06:23 PM)

It hasn't. The prison system there is under serious strain.

Ah right, I suspected as much, thank you.

Mind you, ours is also "under strain", but at far lower percentages per capita than for the US; again, the last time I checked (years ago).

Moonhead -> RE: Are the British more law abiding than Americans? (1/7/2011 3:21:49 PM)

I think the States has the record for the developed nation with the highest proportion of the population locked up, at the moment. Certainly it's a much bigger percentage than we have here, though the Brokeback Coalition might be looking to change that: people inside don't count towards the dole figures, after all...

With respect, the Coalition (much as I despise them) couldn't do much about it. It takes a while to build a number of large prisons, and the last time I looked ours were stretched to breaking point, and had been for some time. In addition, building works on that scale would cost a fortune, and I don't think they have more than 50p to spend on public works the coming year.

They don't, as far as I'm aware, have the option.

Moonhead -> RE: Are the British more law abiding than Americans? (1/7/2011 3:38:01 PM)

True enough. It's probably just as well, to be honest.

It's all relative ain't it, best of all possible worlds etc.

On the plus side, one of our politicians has been locked up for 18 months for fiddling his expenses - about fuckin' time we got a grip on that - wouldn't happen in the 'land of the individuals' US where the politicians are bought and paid for and they can't even sort out a multi-million pound fiasco such as Enron.

That's the difference between us and the Yanks: one of our politicians does a £40k fiddle and he's held accountable; one of theirs/all of theirs are running wild to the tune of millions and it's plain sailing. Never mind, the fuckin' untouchables eh - you have to laugh.

I tried so hard not to laugh my arse off at that.

Tried, and roundly and miserably failed :)

There have been a number of articles (in liberal and left wing, as well as right wing press) the last few months that have pointed up that the Tories, far from being "tough on crime" have, apart from when Michael Howard was Home Secretary, consistently presided over lessening of prison terms and inmate populations, due mostly to financial pressures they didn't want to have to wear.

It's just a shame that one of the few Tories I respect even a little, namely Ken Clarke, has been shunted into the "Justice" job - as blatant a waste of talent as ever I've seen.

Lucylastic -> RE: Are the British more law abiding than Americans? (1/7/2011 3:50:58 PM)

Dont forget Ive been out of the country for 20 odd years  and out of contact with people on the "inside" so to speak for that long but the reporting used to be much less sensationalistic.... the crimes reported on, unless were "shocking" were kept very low profile. Court case outcomes were also very small news unless it was an unusual  event, such as bombings, murders*with guns* or anything murdoch deemed newsworthy

Moonhead -> RE: Are the British more law abiding than Americans? (1/7/2011 3:51:49 PM)

They're not going to want Clarke in the exchequer, which is where he belongs. One of Cameron's baby faced gimps has that one sewn up for now, sadly.

If you're going to "sample" the UK press, try The Independent's web site. It's not perfect (they've been "green-a-lised" with a vengeance), but they do provide interesting articles that make one think about things, instead of trying to serve up "the truth" ready-made, as most other newspaper web sites do.

I don't agree with 75% of what they write, but I do enjoy not agreeing with them, if that makes any sense :)

As to “not as sensationalist”, well yes ... and no. The British press love a good murder, or a politician caught with his hands in either a till or a girl’s knickers, but the one thing that has changed (and you touched upon it) was the influence of The Dirty Digger (Murdoch). That man has to be the single greatest influence for evil currently at large in the world today.

And he’s an American ... although, to be fair, only coz it made financial sense to become one ;)

That's for one simple reason; I honestly don't think Ken (behind closed doors at least) would have approved of the programme of cuts.

There's a rumour that's been doing the rounds that he was offered it, but when told what he'd have to do, declined. No idea if it's true, and doesn't have the ring of truth, but if it did turn out to be true it would be very "Ken".
