UK is ahead of the USA in % in assault victims, rape victims, total crime victims and a lower overall perception of safety. The UK leads the pack in kidnappings (not even listed in the USA data) and is second behind the US in car thefts.

You are correct about the gun statistics you cite. It can be argued that the other categories where the UK fares poorly are related to its having banned handguns and it can also be argued that the USA is actually safer overall because it has not banned handguns.
