quote:
ORIGINAL: samboct Great Now we can't even agree on what other people are saying. Focus here- "Mortality decline as a precondition for fertility decline forms the cornerstone of the theory." Translation- fewer infant deaths LEADS TO having fewer babies. "Although the theory has experienced a great deal of critical analysis, it remains a useful framework for discussing the dynamics of fertility and mortality changes. " Translation- Although not perfect, the theory does work and continues to be useful. Sam It may form a cornerstone of the theory without being the actual cause. Ye olde correlation and causation connundrum. Economic prosperity without an accompanying decline in mortality is not explcitly rejected here. More importantly this theory doesnt even address your proposition, which was specifically about INFANT mortality. Nothing in your quote says anything about INFANT mortality, which I still posit has negligible influence. We have long passed the point where there is material positive selection for the species simply from pumping out babies. In fact, though it is an even more egregious hijack, I would argue that the species has reached the point where there will be no significant evolutionary changes.
