Most electric cars will have a range of about 100 miles. What good are they ? Cato, do you have $41,000 to buy a Chevy Volt ??

The volt has a range of about 100 miles. To say that most electric cars WILL have a range of about 100 miles is assuming that technology will be at a total standstill. Wanna bet on that?
The Chevy volt compared to what can be in the next couple of decades is kind of like comparing a Radio Shack TRS-80 to what is sitting on your desk right now.

Tazzy,

Here is a decent article on the subject.

http://www.edmunds.com/fuel-economy/the-true-cost-of-powering-an-electric-car.html

Basically your electric rate times the number of kilowatts to fully charge the vehicle.

They use the Leaf as an example, which Nissan list as needing 34 kilowatts to fully charge.  Just picking a number if you use 40kw and your electricity cost 15 cents a kw your looking at $6.  That's for a range of about 100 miles making 6 cents per mile.

Taking gas at $3 per gallon, a similar size car averaging 25 mpg city would need 4 gallons at $12.  That would be 12 cents per mile for the same 100 miles.

FL-  dont forget the grid must have road tax to pay for the roads-- so this cost will be assessed- PERIOD.

What ever it is per mile - the roads require this funding.   I suspect- that is a huge block to any breakthru in the tech.

Hunky,

Yes, your gas price has taxes that go toward road construction.  At some point if enough electric cars hit the road there will need to be a way to collect that tax on them.  The easiest  way to do that would be separate meter for your docking station which the electric company would read then you would pay the tax per kw as you do now per gallon.

I do believe Tazzy was speaking of the cost today which is all I was providing.

I have paid $5 a gallon before   was in the late 70's.   So to see it would not be a shock.

Yes, that is what i was asking. But, more specifically, say you were taking a trip, and needed to refuel away from home... what is the cost to plug into one of those stations?

Im not sure what they are called... but im guessing those stations wont be free for use, beyond the cost of electricity.

There are new battery technology in the pipeline.   I dont know when- but the new batteries will have more range then current.

A snag was the main ingredient....

I dont know how PennDOT could be broke already.

So they only plan for 3 snows?   We have anywhere from 12-15 each Winter.

If someone wants to buy a car that will only take them 100 miles, it's their money. Count me out. That wouldn't get me from Milwaukee to Green Bay. Good luck if you get stuck in traffic with a low battery.

I have no need to go to Green Bay- so-- this car would work for me.    ;-)

If electrical cars are a non starter, maybe it's time to give road steamers another shot? That's a notion that could probably have been refined a bit more if it hadn't been killed off by the internal combustion engine...

Irony is just something the maid does a couple of times a week in your world, isn't it?

I dont think they are a non-starter. There just arent enough refuel stations set up. No one can seem to spell out the cost of hooking up to one. Most of the US has less than 10 stations in each state. California being the exception.

http://www.afdc.energy.gov/afdc/fuels/electricity_locations.html

These cars seem to be fantastic for those who only need to get around town. Come back home, hook it up, your done until the power bill comes in. Hook it up at work (something else for the boss to complain about).

I don't think they're a non starter, they just have quite a way to go yet. I was just making a rather cheap joke about a previous example of a vehicle being killed off by factors beyond the manufacturers' control.

Beyond their control? Or were they bought out?
