for those who like domestic service (or even those who don't, but do it anyway haha), what are your favorite tools of the trade?
what feelings (if any) do you get from domestic service?

right now, i'm super excited about O-cel-O scrubbing pads, and i love the feeling of a job well done, and making something more comfortable for those around me.
i also like feeling appreciated, and i don't think that makes you less of a service-oriented person, just a different kind. i don't want a big "omgz thanx sew much!!!" but a pat on the head, or a "good job," is nice.
but sometimes you have enough security in the relationship where those things can go unspoken, and you still feel them.

ANYWAY -- O-cel-o is my brand du jour -- bright, happy patterns, and the scrubbing surface is ridiculously long lasting and tough.

I just found out about this new-fangled thing called a vacuum cleaner. [8D]

you don't lick the floor clean?

Never got into being a service sub. I'd try it if I met the right woman. I'll try lots of things (but not everything), at least once. I do do the laundry, though, in a totally non-D/s way. I like my new front-loader.

Mr Clean Magic Erasers http://www.amazon.com/Mr-Clean-Products-Disposable-set/dp/B004E2RNLE

I they are pretty expensive, so I use them for nothing but plastic stuff (though the package claims it can be used for other things too) and I haven't found a better thing for cleaning the grime off plastic window frames and such.
You'll be surprised HOW dirty those plastic window frames really are, even after cleaning them with other methods, once you use this product on them.

Microfiber http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000Y28KKQ/ref=pd_lpo_k2_dp_sr_2?pf_rd_p=486539851&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B0007DDHF0&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=111CQRZWTADW4AX4ANSH

It's incredible how much easier dusting and cleaning tables and countertops becomes with these.
The cloth is almost like little velcro hooks that trap the dirt instead of spreading it around.

Bounce Dryer Bar http://www.google.com/products/catalog?num=10&hl=en&client=safari&rls=en&q=laundry+sheet+bar&um=1&ie=UTF-8&cid=4852660287012985296&ei=FPlGTfGvHYOCgAeA38GEAg&sa=X&oi=product_catalog_result&ct=result&resnum=4&ved=0CDAQ8wIwAw#ps-sellers

Because I can't for the world seem to remember to put dryer sheets in.
Old habits die hard, we don't use dryer sheets in Belgium and though I like them, I keep forgetting to put them in.

LadyPact -> RE: Domestically inclined? (1/31/2011 11:35:22 AM)

I don't know.  Try it on the model you have at home and find out.

I tried it and Miss Cillie Goos bit me

DesFIP -> RE: Domestically inclined? (1/31/2011 12:43:57 PM)

I don't get off on cleaning. My favorite kitchen tool is my 20 year old Kitchen-Aid mixer. Handles everything I've ever thrown at it. The new ones aren't as good, they're made with plastic gears that will break. The old ones have metal gearing.

Damned typos.

hipsterkittyxo -> RE: Domestically inclined? (1/31/2011 1:40:31 PM)

All of the domestic things I do are direct manifestations of my obsessive compulsive disorder, so I don't even really think about it, even though I know he really appreciates it. I go through a ridiculous amount of Dawn dish detergent, Ajax, and paper towels. :s

Lol, I love Ocello. I am very domestic, even when alone. Just getting everything neat and tidy, so your home is comfy, welcoming and clean is a good feeling.

Try the Swiffer WetJet, I swear by them, no putting the mop back in a bucket of nasty water, no wringing. Also try Swiffer Dusters and if you have pets, the Pledge Pet Hair remover is the bomb.

Great post, thanks.

LillyBoPeep -> RE: Domestically inclined? (1/31/2011 3:00:22 PM)

i have a swiffer wetjet and i LOVE that thing. magic erasers are also pretty spiffy ^_^

the wetjet makes mopping go so much faster, and doesn't leave yet another mess behind (in the form of a bucket of dirty water). =p magic erasers are just magic; no abrasiveness, no chemically smell. nice. ^_^

hausboy -> RE: Domestically inclined? (1/31/2011 3:31:07 PM)

Magic erasers are the bomb! I love, love, love them! They clean everything!

I'm also big on Bon Ami as a hard cleanser....personally, I prefer Ammonia based products (windex) for the chrome and glass as opposed to Vinegar.  I use Vinegar as a last resort.

Brillos are great as long as they are surfaces that won't scratch--with the exception of stainless stteel appliances, brillo pads (light pressure) work excellent for cleaning stove tops and burners. (as long as you are careful and do a test area on the back or side first)

Swiffers!  love the swiffer, especially the swiffer duster and the swiffer dry mops.

J-Wipes are also a must for me--they clean almost anything and are a great cross between a magic eraser and a brillo. You need something with more grip/texture but not harsh or abrasive.

As for caning.....  well.....

I prefer that it comes after cleaning, but since it's never up to me anyway....  I've been doing floors on more than one occasion with a striped bum.

Thank you both LBPeep and HBoy, I've looked at them but never tried them. I kept wondering if they worked.

I think a properly applied cane would get things clean

I haven't gotten one but I hear great things about them. I've still got a couple more boxes of parchment paper around. About ten years ago a store went out of business and I bought every box of parchment paper they had.
