Have to just share this for the other domestic servants out there-- I had been using a stainless steel polish and cleaner--I'll have to check, I think it was called "Simply Stainless" (not to be confused with Simple Green)  It was causing a yellow, waxy finish that was becoming thick and causing a dull and dirt-attracting buildup in my sink.
The magic eraser took off the entire waxy layer--and completely restored the stainless shine.  Beautiful! I'm so pleased.  I'm now swearing off stainless steel polishes.

Now I've got to tackle the hardwood floors....

I am this weird person, and get all psycho and have these cheap toothbrushes for when I get the craze. They're good for everything, but the bathroom's never really clean without them right? So I (almost secretly) enjoy toothbrushes quite... extremely.

Good morning LP, and thank you for not minding a compliment, he is adorable.

It reminded me of my man when he would cook, I just loved watching his butt move when he stirred a pot.

I never mind a compliment.  I appreciate you being willing to make one.  [:)]

for those who like domestic service (or even those who don't, but do it anyway haha), what are your favorite tools of the trade?

#1 cleaning product.....Castile Soap.

You can use this for EVERYTHING....from personal use (body wash) to laundry to floor cleaner to pet wash (yeah, I'm brave enough to bath cats) to tons of other uses. I like Dr. Bronner's brand in the economy size.

Here's 2 cleaning formulas I use:

*Floor Cleaner*

1 gal. hot water
2 T liquid castile soap
10 drops pine, almond or rosemary essential oil

*Earthy Dish Blend*

1 22oz. bottle of unscented castile soap
10 drops sandlewood essential oil
5 drops vanilla essential oil
5 drops sage essential oil
(shake before each use)

Pretty much everything can be cleaned with castile soap, vinegar, baking soda, lemon juice, various essential oils depending on your mood and some effort.

what feelings (if any) do you get from domestic service?

Satisfaction in a job well done...regardless of whether it's my own home or someone eles's.

If one is serious about cleaning, get the 3-M doodlebugs. Yeah, that is industrial stuff. The green scrubby pads are the toned down home version.

BonesfromAsh -- thank you for those recipes ^_^ i've been jonesing to try some DIY soap/cleansers; many of them can't be beat if you're budget-conscious.

i dont know what SilPats are either =p

i've never tried Bon Ami but have seen great reviews for it on FL, and here now, so i think i'll have to give it a whirl. =p

i loath housework. but at the moment am not working so do it all if i was then master would probably take over cooking and help out at othertimes

oceanwynds2 -> RE: Domestically inclined? (2/1/2011 9:31:50 AM)

I try to stay away from commerical chemicals since they irritate my sinus and eyes. I love baking soda and vinegar down the drain..works well for cleaning drains. I love dusting, and cleaning nic nacs in hot soapy water. I do use comet/ajax in sinks and toilet. My favorite thing though is windex. After the sink has been cleaned it just brings an awesome shine. By the way it does kill bugs:)

MaxsGirl -> RE: Domestically inclined? (2/1/2011 10:30:22 AM)

I keep the house plenty clean, but cooking is definitely my preferred mode of service.  I use all stainless steel or cast iron - no non-stick, I hate how it cooks.  In the winter I tend to make more soups and stews, sometime casseroles when I'm limited on time or feeling lazy.  My crock pot gets quite a workout too (the simple kind your grandmother has is the best), but I'm planning to switch to a cast iron dutch oven for my slow cooking.  I like to make yogurt, kefir and cultured buttermilk, and will soon be taking another crack at kombucha.  I'm also going to be teaching myself to can and ferment produce as the summer comes on.  We eat only in-season foods, and this year will be making the switch to only locally grown, including meat.

Cleaning is mostly accomplished here with my Dyson, and a bucket and rag.  I try to use natural cleaning products, like Bronner's, vinegar and baking soda.  I admit I love my Magic Eraser though, and it gets a lot of work.
