Tazzy, that didn't seem to limit her did it? What did she mean by ,"a more vigorous foreign policy?" Were the Secy's of State before her "not" doing their jobs in her opinion? I mean the word "vigorous" covers a lot of area doesn't it? It implies that she wants to do "more" than the job entails.
And again, she's not supposed to be an "advocate" for foreign countries. She's supposed to be an advocate for the U.S.
That link isn't much of a "job-description" is it? Where are all the lists of things she's "not" supposed to do?
Job descriptions also contain things that aren't supposed to be done in that they're limiting. I guess in "government" they don't believe in "limits."
That link sounds like someone gave her "the key to the city."

These are not within her job description. Try looking up what a Secretary of State does.

As I suspected.. the U.S. press did its usual bit of getting things just enough wrong as to mislead.

The girls was not convicted but was the victim of a fatwa, religious ruling, and not a trial. And, the man who had raped her had the same sentence. The fatwa was for having sex with a married man and the man for being unfaithful to his wife... check the links from the U.K. for more information.

In other words, she was killed by religious fundamentalists. And the fundamentalists that called for the punishment are under arrest.

Stefan

i think she was killed by her society, which accepts "religious rulings" over law, and places such a stigma on noncompliance as to make defiance of the rulings effectively impossible, despite the fact that they're illegal. She was killed by a society whose inhabitants are so ignorant of the law that her own father didn't know that the "sentence" was illegal, and handed her over knowing that his whole family would be ostracised if he didn't.

i understand the guilty parties are under arrest. i know it's a step in the right direction. What can i say, i'm a "glass is half empty" kind of a girl. To me it's just not enough.

Maybe that illustrates a few things Pam. How relevant or irrelevant the "law" can be, at least the written version.

Jack lived with Jim for a time. Jack was a bad boy and his olady put him out. One day Jack was short one dollar. Jim had a dollar he used as a prank, it had a really thin, practically invisible string attached to it, he used it as a prank. Jack took the dollar and spent it, thinking nothing of it, intent to pay it back. That was not good enough for Jim. Jack was faced with the decision - an ass whipping or the tazer. He always has the option of walking out the door. But he violated Jim's law. In Jim's house.

How different is a community than a home ? People think they can just write a law and people will obey. I'm here to tellya that it isn't so. From myself to about 75% of my friends, past and present, it isn't so. At Jim's we had gamblinmg, hos, drinking and whatever drugs, as long as it didn't get out of hand. None of us cared even one iota what was "legal" or not. In this town there are many who think the same way. I think maybe that my neighbors would look the other way if I were disposing of a body at the hill at the end of the street. This is because of their loyalty to me, and mine to them. And these are not radical assholes like me, I'm talking retired factory/auto workers, and my next door neighbor who is an officer of the court. They feign compliance, just like a hell of alot more people than many think.

Even in this country, there are the sheeple, and then there are the others, in sheeple's clothing. We don't obey, but we try not to make too much trouble. This goes on everywhere. I guess Bangladesh is included.

Down here, I might build an addition to my house. No permits or anything, but things will be done right. My neighbor is an officer of the court, and if he catches wind that I did not obtain permission to build on to my own house you know what he is going to do ? Probably help me paint.

About three blocks up the street is outside to me. It might as well be a different country, really. People keep their mouth shut and we all get along just fine. We don't cause trouble, except when the city comes to trim the trees. We watch them like a hawk because if they don't do it right they might kill the trees. The snow plow goes by. The meter readers come once in a while. This is a community.

So I can understand how those people think. There are more important things than the "law". I don't agree with the ummmm,,, Bangladeshians ? But I can understand. In understanding that, I know that no sanction, law or sentence will change them. They either change themselves or stay the same. And if such people move in around here, I have no idea what will happen to them. Hint hint. Segregation ? YOU DAMN RIGHT !

T^T
