And as much as I enjoy agreeing with the men, I think there's some wiggle room on this. I've utilized honorifics in the past and my messages were readily received. Perhaps it is largely dependent on the individual and the content therein.

Agreed.... ~chuckle~ In life generally, and certainly over the last 50 years, I have found that you can pretty well say anything to anybody provided you say it with a smile and say it politely. There are exceptions which are usually high protocol situations, so you need to pick your moments too.. Example.. An Aussie in any bar in the works can call another Aussie a silly bastard. (have seen bars in Saigon clear years ago of US service men fearing a bar fight..) For us, bastard is a term of male endearment. yet a Pom or Yank (British male or American male) calls an Aussie a bastard, there is a very real chance a fight will happen.. Thus some honorifics need to be earned before use and only by certain people.. Such dear lady as I know, you know well, are the vagaries of Social Customs.. I start to ramblwhich shows Hibernation time is upon me..

Indeed and I've conversed privately with several respondents using honorifics and my messages weren't rebuffed. That led to the conclusion that there's probably more to it, but on a general note most aren't seeking that without provocation.

While I'm a proponent for educating oneself in them, I also take care to be mindful of my personal ethic in the midst of what is typically done. I find formality bodes well in this realm. It reinforces a standard of decorum that I appreciate and usually encourages the other party to respond in a similar vain. Aside from blatant spamming that is truly sparse, I don't receive belligerent messages directed to my attention. Presentation plays a big part in that and the theory has been well tested.
