I have always felt we should have a national language. BUT if you do that, politicians who promoote it will lose part of the votes, while others will use it as an advantage to say... See? They (R or D) isnt American at all! They want to force you to become... umm... American.

KenDckey -> RE: Why can 't we do this in the US? (3/5/2011 11:43:23 AM)

ugh   We would have to learn to speak a whole new language.   We can't even spell right.  American, English, Spanglish, whatever language we choose, will just be wrong.

Why would it be wrong?

What is wrong with having a national language?

Yes please! I live in the middle of sugar cane country, and the workforce here is often
enhanced by many that speak another language. Not only would it motivate those that are
seeking to garner employment in our country, but it may even unchain those bilingual citizens
that are stuck in one position because they are the convenient go between for when the boss
needs to tell (insert foreign surname here) something.

TheHeretic -> RE: Why can 't we do this in the US? (3/5/2011 11:54:49 AM)

That would be racist, wouldn't it?

I think it is practical and necessary to reduce segregation, racism and promote a feeling of being one nation.

What is the true root of racism in America today? Is it some ones looks…is it their dress… myself I think it is how they talk and can they even communicate with me.

Tell the truth…when you hear a minority, lets say an African American for this example, speaking just like you, do you think of them differently then when you hear a person of the same color speaking jive or soul or black English in the inner city? I know I sound terribly racists…I’m not…but I want to make this point even if it sounds like I am.

When I traveled to Miami I got lost and ended up needing to pull into a filling station to ask for directions… It took me 8 stops until I could find someone who spoke English. These were Americans just like me but we could not communicate...I did not feel like I was in America…Do I still sound racists or just honest?

I believe there is nothing in the world that separates peoples more than language. I think a national language is not racists but our best bet to keep racism from forming in the first place.

Simply because I speak from the majority does not make me racists.. I believe if I move permanently to Spain for instance I should be required to at least pass a rudimentary test in the local language.

Has anyone ever actually met a second generation American that speaks no English at all? Even the amish and other very reclusive groups speak some English IME.

If you are right then why is there such resistance to a national language?... It would not prohibit you or anyone else from speaking a second or third or however many languages you would want to speak.

It may do good but will not do bad…so why not?

The easy quib is that the more government regulates things the less freedom we each have.

A better answer is what exactly would having an official language do? Would it require that all official documents be in English only? That would be harsh for legal immigrants who don't read english competently. Would it forbid ASL at government functions? Don't you think excluding the deaf from public life might be a tad unreasonable? Would the police not be allowed to communicate in and/or take reports in languages besides English? Wouldn't that make immigrant communities even more prone to crime?

Yes all official documents should be in English... if needed or desired other translations could be provided... what is the big deal here?

Don't you think bringing up the deaf is just a little far reaching?

All police reports should be in English and how or why would a national language stop police from communicating in another language if necessary?

Ummmm - I don't know.  Do you suppose it might have something to do with the 1st amendment?

So exactly how much do you know about English requirements for immigrants?   I mean, apart from what you feel?

DarkSteven -> RE: Why can 't we do this in the US? (3/5/2011 1:45:48 PM)

I speak Spanish.  The threat of having to put up with my Spanish has caused several native Spanish speakers to improve their English.

Don't you think those hires are voluntary on the part of the employer?  Does it seem to bother them?

Do you think the employer should be responsible for teaching them English?   or shall we say American?

NihilusZero -> RE: Why can 't we do this in the US? (3/5/2011 1:50:57 PM)

Plenty of people born in the US can't speak English properly.

A lot of official documents are in Vietnamese, Laotian, etc.

You know how those people got here?  Because they took our side in a war we chose in their country, and we had the class to get them out when we left.   Many of them, including their elderly relatives, still can't speak English.

You may not have thought about this.  My view is that we owe anybody who risks their life for us, and whining about translation is really chickenshit.  But more & more, that's what I see, a country of chickenshits who elect the stupidest assholes they can find to give all their money to defense contractors and investment bankers, and then blame the Mexicans selling oranges on the freeway.

I'm tempted to think it's ignorance, but I know better.  My Republican neighbors are just plain chickenshit.

Moonhead -> RE: Why can 't we do this in the US? (3/5/2011 1:52:17 PM)

I think we'd better say American: I have no idea what the hell it is you people speak, but it isn't the Queen's English...
