ugh We would have to learn to speak a whole new language. We can't even spell right. American, English, Spanglish, whatever language we choose, will just be wrong.

I live in the middle of sugar cane country, and the workforce here is often enhanced by many that speak another language. Not only would it motivate those that are seeking to garner employment in our country, but it may even unchain those bilingual citizens that are stuck in one position because they are the convenient go between for when the boss needs to tell (insert foreign surname here) something.

Has anyone ever actually met a second generation American that speaks no English at all? Even the amish and other very reclusive groups speak some English IME.

Would it require that all official documents be in English only? That would be harsh for legal immigrants who don't read english competently. Would it forbid ASL at government functions? Don't you think excluding the deaf from public life might be a tad unreasonable? Would the police not be allowed to communicate in and/or take reports in languages besides English? Wouldn't that make immigrant communities even more prone to crime?

Yes all official documents should be in English... if needed or desired other translations could be provided... what is the big deal here? Don't you think bringing up the deaf is just a little far reaching? All police reports should be in English and how or why would a national language stop police from communicating in another language if necessary? Butch

I speak Spanish. The threat of having to put up with my Spanish has caused several native Spanish speakers to improve their English.
