Tears, shouts as terror hearing becomes political

WASHINGTON – Congress pushed deep into a raw and emotional debate Thursday over American Muslims who have committed terrorist attacks in the name of religion, in a hearing punctuated by tearful testimony, angry recriminations and political theater.

Republican Rep. Peter King declared U.S. Muslims are doing too little to help fight terror in America. Democrats warned of inflaming anti-Muslim sentiment and energizing al-Qaida.

Framed by photos of the burning World Trade Center and Pentagon, the families of two young men blamed the Islamic community for inspiring young men to commit terrorism. On the other side, one of the two Muslims in Congress wept while discussing a Muslim firefighter who died in the attacks.

[SNIP]King, a New York congressman and the new chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, said he called the hearing because Muslim community leaders need to speak out more loudly against terrorism and work more closely with police and the FBI. Democrats wanted the hearing to focus on terror threats more broadly, including from white supremacists.[/SNIP]

Looks like the Republicans want to focus on Muslims and completely ignore other groups that have been involved in Domestic Terrorism. God forbid if they actually looked at White Christians who have bombed Abortion Clinics, burned abortion clinics, OR shot and murdered workers and doctors who worked at Abortion Clinics. Whites that have been involved in Race Motivated Hate Crimes, or anti-government extremists like Timothy McVeigh and people who follow the same philosophy.

Wow, focusing on the greatest threat first...who'da thunk it.

jlf1961 -> RE: Republican Islamaphobia in terrorist hearings (3/10/2011 4:35:14 PM)

There is no proof that Muslims are the greatest threat. They are probably at higher risk to be attacked by "WHITE CHRISTIAN AMERICANS" or have you forgotten about all the protests against Muslim community centers, Mosques, or even the pipe bomb that was used against a mosque in Florida.

I am sure that groups like the Aryan Nation are just as big a threat, at least to non-whites, but that is okay, right?

Sanity -> RE: Republican Islamaphobia in terrorist hearings (3/10/2011 4:42:55 PM)

If Congress holds hearings to determine the truth, leftist flag burners and certain other rabble rousers join together in protest. So whats your point?

Imagine if the government came down on some of our home-grown outer fringe Muslim groups the way it does on white trailer trash Aryan nation types, just picture the ensuing leftist outrage. Especially if it were a more center-right administration doing it...

Sorry, but provable facts on the anti-Muslim protests and the pipe bomb, but lets look at the FBI reports on Hate crimes, shall we, and please note, white supremicist groups are listed as domistic terrorist organizations.

quote:

Just in the past month, three men were indicted in New Mexico for assaulting a disabled Navajo man; one individual was sentenced for putting a hangman’s noose on the house of a Honduran immigrant in Louisiana; and another man was sentenced for burning a predominately African-American church in Massachusetts.

All three of these incidents were investigated by the FBI as federal hate crimes, the number one priority of our civil rights program. Another FBI priority is the annual collection and public reporting of hate crimes…in order to help the nation get a more accurate accounting of the problem.
Victims

* 61.1 percent of all hate crimes were committed against persons, while 38.1 percent were crimes against property.
* Of the 4,057 victims of racial bias, 71.5 percent were victims because of an offender’s prejudice against blacks.
* Of the 1,575 victims of anti-religious hate crimes, 71.9 percent were victims because of an offender’s anti-Jewish bias.

Offenders

* Of the 6,225 known offenders, 62.4 percent were white, 18.5 percent were black, and 7.3 percent were groups of individuals of various races. The race was unknown for 10.2 percent of offenders, and other races accounted for the remaining offenders.
* Of the 5,136 offenders who carried out crimes against persons, 40.3 percent committed simple assaults, 34.6 percent intimidated their victims, and 23.5 percent committed aggravated assaults. Murders and rapes were committed by 1.2 percent of the offenders.

Crime locations

* 31.3 percent of hate crime incidents—whether motivated by racial, religious, sexual orientation, ethnicity/national origin, or disability bias—happened in or near victims’ homes.
* 17.2 percent took place on highways, roads, alleys, or streets.

Now do a little research on domestic terrorist acts in the states, 3 involved Muslims, then there was the Oklahoma City Bombing (white guy), Anthrax attacks (non muslim) Centennial park bombing in Atlanta (white christian,) and there are more. Mostly these are committed by WHITE, CHRISTIAN males.

And you say the Muslims are the biggest threat? You clearly have not learned anything from recent American History.

Wow, its as if youve never even heard of 9/11 or any of dozens of other terror attacks by Islamic radicals.

You are one strange man, the word delusional does describe you well.

willbeurdaddy -> RE: Republican Islamaphobia in terrorist hearings (3/10/2011 5:19:58 PM)

A study by the Triangle Center on Terrorism and Homeland Security at Duke University found that in 2010 twenty American Muslims had been arrested on charges of terrorism.

At a recent House Homeland Security Committee hearing, DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano said, that homegrown terrorism and plots inspired or directed by al Qaeda were the greatest threat to the United States.

To combat this growing trend Napolitano said that officials “are working with our international allies who have experience with homegrown terrorism,” including Canada and the United Kingdom.

Damn those Republicans, afraid of their own shadows.

Oh....wait

No, I have provided facts proving my point, and all you can do is mount a personal attack. Basically the last resort of someone who has lost the argument.

Sanity -> RE: Republican Islamaphobia in terrorist hearings (3/10/2011 5:34:50 PM)

Youve lost the argument before you even started, youre like the medieval types who burned books and thought science was from the devil.

The hearings will go on and the facts will come out, and there is nothing you can do to stop it.

It was not an attack, it was an observation. To be fair, perhaps you arent deluisonal, perhaps your head is just buried in a Texas anthill. Go talk with Napolitano.

Gee children, heres a really novel idea - if you want "the Republicans" to focus on Aryans, or Christians, or hate crimes or Timothy Mcveigh then make that the subject of the thread, instead of Islam.

What do you think? [8|]

Explain how the shifting of the focus of this thread would alter the focus of the hearings that have inspired said thread.
What the fuck have you been drinking ?

So now you open borders types suddenly care about foreign born Muslims proving their citizenship before giving them legitimacy? [:D]

What evidence does Rep. King provide that US Muslims are "doing too little to help fight terror in America?"   Who is he to say?  Radicalization of US Muslims may indeed be an issue, but the inflammatory fashion in which these hearings are being conducted seems more likely to hurt than help.  Such theatrics are more likely to inhibit not encourage US Muslim cooperation with law enforcement, as well as supply implicit license to the non-Muslim fringe prone to committing hate crimes against Muslims which, in turn, compounds the problem.

jlf1961 -> RE: Republican Islamaphobia in terrorist hearings (3/10/2011 7:24:31 PM)

quote:

David Schanzer, director of the centre, said the study "puts into perspective the threat presented by domestic radicalisation of Muslim Americans."

"Is this a problem that deserves the attention of law enforcement and the Muslim American community? Absolutely" he said. "But Americans should take note that these crimes are being perpetrated by a handful of people who actions are denounced and rejected by virtually all the Muslims living in the United States."

Several high-profile attacks have dominated the headlines in recent years, such as the killing of 13 people at Fort Hood, Texas, in 2009 or the failed Times Square bombing last year.

But less noticed is the cooperation offered by many American Muslims to law enforcement agencies in order to prevent such attacks, according to the report.

The study said tip-offs from the American Muslim community provided the source of information that led to a terrorist plot being thwarted in 48 of 120 cases involving American Muslims since the attacks of September 11, 2001. American Muslims arrested on terror charges down sharply

quote:

Since the hearings are on DOMESTIC Terrorism, not international terrorism, and domestic terrorism in the United States between 1980 and 2000 consisted of 250 of the 335 incidents confirmed as or suspected to be terrorist acts by the FBI. These 250 attacks are considered domestic by the FBI because they were carried out by U.S. citizens. source

Funny thing is that there are anti-government extremists in this country who OPENLY advocate armed action against the government.
