The study said tip-offs from the American Muslim community provided the source of information that led to a terrorist plot being thwarted in 48 of 120 cases involving American Muslims since the attacks of September 11, 2001. American Muslims arrested on terror charges down sharply

Numbers are sometimes revealing. In the approx 10 years since 9/11, a total of 120 cases of domestic terrorism involving Muslim extremists. Of these 120 incidents, 48 (40%) were thwarted. Of the remaining 72 (60%), more than a few were so hapless and amateurish there was no loss of life. Even where there was loss of life, in most instances it was negligible. Fatalities were minuscule compared to say, gun killings or road fatalities, or even as several posters have pointed out, hate crimes generally. (This is not to excuse these incidents in any way whatsoever.)

An incident that occurs, on average, once every two months in a country the size of the US hardly constitutes a crisis. In short, these numbers fail to justify the level of political attention and/or Congressional resources being devoted to the issue. Fail utterly.

The reason(s) for the existence of this inquiry do not lie in the issue itself. There is a need to look elsewhere. The obvious candidate is political expediency.
It's entirely possible that this attack on Muslims might backfire, and radicalize a few whom would otherwise have kept working on their BSEEs.

Geraldo Rivera said tonight on Bill O'Reilly's show that the KKK is more of a threat than radical islam.
This is the kind of mental illness you're dealing with when you deal with the left.

More than "entirely possible", my feeling is that it's a virtual certainty.

The same points were made about the Iraq fiasco prior to the invasion. They were howled down at the time. Often the howls were sourced in the very same quarters currently proposing this latest exercise in futility. Events proved these predictions to be entirely correct, a point now widely acknowledged, even by many proponents of the debacle.

A neutral observer could be forgiven for concluding that this is whole point of the exercise.

White Supremacy groups are just as dangerous,if not more dangerous than militant muslims.Radical christians are also very dangerous as well.Pete King should address ALL groups that resort to violence. Then again,Pete King was really using Muslim scare tactics to scare old white people,so they come out and vote against that evil muslim in the white house in 2012.You know, the old white people who have not been able to move past the 1960s.

So let me see if I have this straight here, Jlf. It seems a little bit confuzzling. On this thread, you are smearing all Republicans with the accusation that one Republican is trying to smear a group on the actions of a few. On another thread, you are yourself using a particular Republican as a means to smear all of them.

Nope. Not confuzzling at all, is it?

Sad.

I think that was his point. Libs havent learned a damn thing since "Make Love, Not War" except that they need Viagra.

You are sadly mistaken.

Liberals use Cialis and have erections lasting longer than four hours.

And we never call our doctors.

Ahhh, thank you for clearing up why you have so little blood flow to your brain.

Hey, we all have to prioritize.

Who is he to say?

Chairman and long term member of the committee. Exactly who should be saying it.

Has he adduced any evidence or is he just saying it?

Uhhhh thats what the hearings are, evidence gathering and discussion.

Relatively content free so far.  House Committee on Homeland Security, The Extent of Radicalization in the Muslim Community and That Community's Response, 10 March 2011   Rep. King's stated justification for the hearings includes the following:

quote:

ORIGINAL: Representative Peter T. King (R, New York), Opening Statement to Hearings by the House Committee on Homeland Security on The Extent of Radicalization in the Muslim Community

Just this past Sunday, for instance, Denis McDonough, the Deputy National Security Advisor to President Obama, made a major speech on radicalization stating that:

"al Qaeda and its adherents have increasingly turned to another troubling tactic: attempting to recruit and radicalize people to terrorism here in the United States."

"For a long time, many in the U.S. thought that we were immune from this threat. That was false hope, and false comfort. This threat is real, and it is serious.

"(Al Qaeda does this) for the expressed purpose of trying to convince Muslim Americans to reject their country and attack their fellow Americans."

Similarly in late December, Attorney General Holder said the growing number of young Americans being radicalized and willing to take up arms against our country "keeps him awake at night."

And two weeks before that the Attorney General defended the FBI's sting operation against Mohammad Osman Mohammad who attempted a terror attack during a Christmas tree lighting celebration in Portland, Oregon saying he made "no apologies" for this operation.

"Those who characterize the FBI's activities as entrapment simply do not have their facts straight."

One month ago Secretary Napolitano testified before this Committee and said that the threat level today is as high as it has been since September 11th because of increased radicalization in our country....

I have repeatedly said the overwhelming majority of Muslim-Americans are outstanding Americans and make enormous contributions to our country. But there are realities we cannot ignore. For instance a Pew Poll said that 15% of Muslim-American men between the age of 18 and 29 could support suicide bombings. This is the segment of the community al Qaeda is attempting to recruit.

Granted that DHS and LE need to get out in front of any potential for terrorism arising from radicalization in the US Muslim community, these hearings impede that effort, by alienating US Muslims and damaging relations between the US Muslim community and law enforcement.

So this looks like political theater and posturing to me.  Nothing unusual of course but in this case potentially worsens the problem.

ORIGINAL Rep. Peter King defends IRA support, Islamic radicalism hearings

New York Rep. Peter King says his past support for the Irish Republican Army (IRA)--long listed as a terrorist group by the U.S. State Department--doesn't pose a double-standard for the hearings he will gavel to order in the House tomorrow on the threat of Islamic radicalism.

Peter King: force behind Muslim hearings was an IRA supporter, The Guardian, 10 March 2011

quote:

ORIGINAL Peter King's subversive fantasy
Congressman Peter King, who has rationalised his past defence of IRA terrorism without a hint of self-awareness or irony, is now the self-appointed protector of America from future terrorist attacks by holding a congressional hearing on the "Extent of Radicalisation in the American Muslim Community and that Community's Response." King presiding over this hearing would be like asking Mel Gibson to chair an impartial session on Jewish American loyalties. King has in the past claimed there are "too many mosques" in America and that 85% of American mosques and its religious leaders are radicalised, a statement that has been thoroughly discredited.

Charles6682 -> RE: Republican Islamaphobia in terrorist hearings (3/11/2011 9:39:09 PM)

Peter King is an intolerant biggot period. He is a disgrace to the state of New York and to the country. It really says alot about the district he respresents that keeps voting him in office.

Yes, but that is different. It is ok to be a bigot, as long as your target is a republican. Other wise it is wrong. Understand now?

They are intolerant and violent.

Incredible but not surprising. Are you really trying to equate 1.5 billion Muslims with a few hundred thousand KKK members ?

Eh.  He's a politician.   He stays in office by marketing fear, and staying on the skyline waving the flag.  There's no such thing as bad publicity in this scenario.

nuclear bombs being deployed. That doesn't mean they weren't the greatest threat to the Japanese war effort.

The US didn't have that many nukes.  The relentless air and submarine attacks had done, and would have continued to do far more damage.

Massive invasions were scheduled, but Japan itself would have been isolated without oil, and unable to mount any air or sea operations.    The only real need for invading Japan was not to finish them off - they would have died on the vine without oil - but to settle the postwar world, because the situations in China & the USSR were totally unsettled.   Historians have said that the nuclear attacks were probably meant more as a lesson for Stalin than Tojo.

I apologize for putting out more ideas than a Republican can absorb.   Think about that when you threaten somebody with a gun - they might have MIRVs.

They're selling a concept to the sound-bite mob, and that concept is that Republicans are working very hard, and are very mad, and they know this sells.   Never mind that they're working about as effectively as the 3 stooges.   They're whipping their constituency into a lather, and none of them have any interest in looking at results, or thinking what they're doing.

jlf1961 -> RE: Republican Islamaphobia in terrorist hearings (3/12/2011 4:44:14 PM)

I find it strange that with ALL the "domestic terrorist organizations" listed by the FBI, the Republicans on this committee want to focus on one group of people.

I mean there is quite a few, like the Animal Liberation Front, Alpha 66, The Army of God, Aryan Nations, The Covenant, The Sword, and the Arm of the Lord, The Earth Liberation Front, The Jewish Defense League, Ku Klux Klan, Phineas Priesthood, not to mention the various anti-government sovereign citizen groups around the country.

Aneirin -> RE: Republican Islamaphobia in terrorist hearings (3/12/2011 5:26:51 PM)

It's simple, rid the Islamic problem, and who can we focus our attention on next, ad finitum, until they focus on themselves as not being pure. A destructive mechanism that knows no bounds

Dont forget the Alaska Peacemakers Militia

FAIRBANKS — Five people, including militia activist Schaeffer Cox, were arrested Thursday in the Fairbanks area for allegedly conspiring to kill multiple Alaska State Troopers and a federal judge.
The group had stockpiled weapons and conducted surveillance on the homes of two troopers, according to Alaska State Troopers. Some of the weapons known to be in the cache are prohibited by state or federal law, according to troopers.

In addition to Cox, those taken into custody are Lonnie and Karen Vernon of Salcha, Coleman Barney of North Pole and Michael Anderson, whose hometown was unclear. All were taken into custody without incident.

The arrests were made by the Alaska State Troopers’ Special Emergency Reaction Team, along with Fairbanks troopers, the FBI, U.S. Marshal’s Service and the Fairbanks Police Department.
